Really excited to hear you discuss more of these. I can see why people may have thought of them as controversial, particularly the child abuse scenes in the diamond girls, but these a very real issues that sadly lots of children go though. I think jacqueline wilson handles serious subjects like these so well. I recall her saying in her autobiography that she felt irritated by the "smug, safe, middle class world" of her children's books growing up and wanted to read about the real issues that children face

I was obsessed with Cookie! I remember physically closing the book and sighing when Birthday the rabbit died, thinking "Thats enough Jacqueline Wilson for one day!" lol 😅

I picked up a couple Jacqueline Wilson books in a charity shop the other day after watching your first video and one of them is The illustrated mum so that's exciting

Jesus christ, the moment you said Midnight I had a full flashback to stealing this from my cool-but-scary older siblings room (appropriate) and being traumatised yet fascinated by everything about it for reasons I absolutely could not comprehend. Watching you describe how queer coded Violet's friend-crush on Jasmine is, rememebering how it made me ask my mam could I have goth clothing, i'm starting to realise how, despite how inexplicably disturbed I was by it, looking back I'm realizing why that book affected me. Gothic horror in a Jacqueline Wilson setting. The part where Violet starts frantically studying the illustrations in her fairy tale books after seeing Jamsmin and Will kiss and seeing a bunch of sexual subtext where she'd previously seen fairy tale violence is such an uncomfortable but striking bit of writing that yeah, looking back makes it hard to read the book in any way that doesn't make it about her attraction to Jasmine and/or Will.

Inexplicably disturbed is a perfect articulation of how I felt the first time I read it too. I'd love to ask her some questions about it, it's so different to her other work

Jacqueline Wilson's books were so formative to me. I reread them over this year actually and was surprised by how dark some of the (implied) content was, but I feel she never was writing trauma porn. Plenty of her books were grounded in things that were realistic enough (casual parental neglect, being in the care system etc) and I really can't think of many other authors who tackled similar topics in a way that would be accessible to kids who lived similar lives. Great videos by the way! "Pretty insane for us to have been reading growing up" is most of her bibliography I feel.

Beauty’s dad killed the rabbit?! I didn’t pick up on that as a child either, omg that’s shocking even for Jacqueline Wilson

I always interpreted Violet's reaction to Jasmine and Will kissing as her feeling betrayed rather than jealous, because Violet always feels overshadowed by Will and in that moment it seems like Jasmine, someone who she thought truly liked her and cared about her was just using her to get closer to her brother like everyone else.

Read The Illustrated Mum as a child. As it happened, our mother had a bipolar diagnosis at the time, so I recognised the signs of mania, and I felt Dolphin's growing dread in her stomach. Idk if the book helped me, but I did feel seen.

I'm so happy that you actually made a second video, I loved the first one! You do such a good job describing everything, it's so satisfying. It's so interesting reliving all of these storylines through the eyes of an adult now and realising how dark they can be, but as a child they seemed so vivid and colourful

i fucking ADORE jacqueline wilson. i have a full bookshelf just for her! i reread them over and over and as i get older and the characters seem to get younger, i have a completely new experience every time. especially with the illustrated mum, i got diagnosed bipolar like a year or two ago? so reading it i was just going "damn that's me" i even have a jacqueline wilson colouring book i got recently. seriously OBSESSED. and maybe this isn't something that needs to be voiced online but she's the same age as trump and if trump dies after her i will fucking RIOT.
