No commentary can replace the events here depicted nor Lacan's insights but in more humble terms here's what I think is being discussed. Society is a programming (the causes and conditions that bring about its result) and the authorities are the care-takers of this programming (the 'face of power' - the 'master's discourse' - which is actually the programming.) But the programming works its death in everyone, not just the care-takers. It's not them versus us. The masses even seek security/ tranquility in the sleep of Dostoevsky's notion of 'oblivion in obedience' (the programming). As such Lacan warns that a revolution for democracy and freedom of spirit is not possible because the power (the structure of the programming) is seeded throughout the society. For example, walking in the street the other day, I heard some people shouting from their car as they drove by a protest against police killings: 'Why don't you get a job?' The programming speaking. It speaks everywhere and none speaks outside of it. What is then possible? What is the way through this thick unconscious mass of violent or docile bodies? Lacan sympathizes with the young man. The young man wants to break the programming (though he targets the wrong 'authority' figure). And spilling water on Lacan's head and ruining his tie - an act of freedom or perhaps only of defiance - is not sufficient against the 'tyrant'. As long as we remain the 'dark side of ontology', in 'the consciousness that has no consciousness in it' (Levinas), there seems to be no way out. If the program vanishes, then what? I'm not suggesting surrender. We can police the program and the face of power. And perhaps then steer in the direction of freedom and spirit. I wonder if Kafka's work is not relevant here: are we not perpetually on trial by the programmed society? It seems so. For those who stand outside of it, the program is a nightmare. And though the ones outside are the 'Angelic', as Lacan says, they are the ones perpetually 'cleansed' from the society.

program aka system. I think the idea or vision lies not in studying other peoples/celebrated intellectuals visions. But to introspect and become conscious. But since most won't.. and most are addicted to being entertained until death. Then nothing will change. The system is cozy for the ones fitting in it, it caters to them. Those that fall through its mazes are ridiculed and unseen. This is how i see it.

I think Lacan's ideas about how we are constrained within a pervasive and insidious symbolic order (what you're calling programming) are important and often applicable, and I think it's important that any political movement that frames itself as resisting an established social order critically self-examines along the lines you're talking about, but I think one of the features that very insidious symbolic order confers upon people is a distraction from the material conditions that compose and prop-up said social systems. Basically I think the primary revolutions that still need to happen in the world are quite simple and a matter of material factors (environmental, poverty, starvation, etc), but it's correct to note such material revolutions can't happen without the more abstract one of breaking free from our programming and directing our frustrations to where they're really needed, but the risk is in the more abstract notion of revolution itself becoming frivolous and unfocused.
@PseudoMystic4 жыл бұрын
2 year old comment but since you're already in the critical theory rabbit hole I'd recommend looking for any accessible analysis/summary of Deleuze and Guattari's book on Kafka, can't say I'd recommend the book itself unless you're a diehard D&G fan, but it focuses a lot on the political implications of Kafka's work in surprising ways, and it's delightfully contrarian providing really odd takes on almost everything else about his writing and life (though they do they're best to back up their arguments).

The student asserts that authentic communication in society is no longer possible; that we are condemned to our miserable existences, having to adjust to our shit-jobs and the boredom of it all. He wants a liberated society, a spontaneous order that permits authentic relationships. Lacan actually sympathizes with him but warns that the discourse is always already owned by 'the master'. The world is always already 'administered'. Is there a region where authentic communication is possible? Only in France could something like this happen. The culture of cultures! Although, the administrators seem to have won (for now).
@nicolasdelaforge74207 жыл бұрын
Someone sent me a message saying: their 'miserable existences' are already defined and symbolized by 'existence itself'. Does this mean that there is always already a 'programing'? Levy Strauss held that there is no 'human being' as such until he is programed into a given culture. Scary. Is this 'the master'? But the Master of Kyoto said that he discovered Reality and that Reality is the trance state of meditation where language does not exist - a living realm. Is this why the Biblical Isiah said to the people of his day: 'Your are not true souls; your lives do not live'.
@Untilitpases7 жыл бұрын
"Authentic communication" "Spontaneous order". "Shit jobs". Lacan sympathizes as an adult does with a romanticist's tantrum. He sees the child's noble aims and dull ignorance giving birth to them. Whereas I also see the disgraceful end result, brute force as an excrement. Lacan is not saying the discourse is always owned by a master. He's saying the master inevitably *forms*. It's an epiphenomena. Organisation, or reorganization or revolution, every system will coagulate a "pyramid". It's shallow thinking to wish for a "liberated society". Society by identity (definition) conforms to self imposed codes of conduct. (They develop in natural phenomena as the most cost-effective of the alternatives too.) Those shit jobs are nothing but allocation of social mediation. They exist necessarily. There is a need for *allocation* in a society which stems from specialization. You need bread so someone needs to bake it, and you need transportation of said bread and materials since there are millions in your city. That transportation should be conducted in an egalitarian/proportional manner, or some parts of the town would have an unfair advantage and thus outperform and dominate the livelihood of the remaining part and form monopolies and the base materials need to be safe and healthy etc. So, transportation and quality needs to be surveyed in such a way as to enhance efficacy. And the surveyors need to be surveyed so that their surveying isn't arbitrary but conforms to the desired outcome. Hierarchy develops organically. Anytime there's a *desired outcome*, some *configuration* favors it. Some *effort* is due to bring about that configuration. That effort in our case is the social contract.
@Untilitpases7 жыл бұрын
This is another way of restating Buddha. He knew that desire leads to pain and suffering. (Because he knew that the ideal is ideal due to it not being material) so that the ideal desired is never *attain-able*. You can go the purist way and become a hermit, or one can conform to society and strike that give-take relationship.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . It does if you already understand him. Lacan is like a zen koan.

It doesn't make any senses indeed. Lacan benefited from the fact that nobody knew psychoanalysis in France back then (Freud's work was just beginning to be translated). It is nothing else than perverses thoughts, and it really hurted how France's psychoanalytic tradition is seen abroad. This is a shame... (if you want to read a good theorist from France, I recommand Andre Green which work have been translated in many languages, and is still very discussed today)

Yes, he is a perfect sample for the cruelty that's inner to the modernity. It's not needed to tell who among these two, it's perfectly clear by now. Thanks, to the man with the big paunch, the same you are perfectly free to call "Time". Why not?
