Hello Biographics, I'm French born in Paris in 1967. I was 12 when he was killed in Paris. It is hard to imagine how popular he was with the working classes in France. People were generally rather amused that he managed to escape each time. And especially that he succeeds in his escapes with such panache. The working class in France doesn't so much appreciate the police or justice you see. And even less at that time. They think that there are two justices, those of the elites, and that of the poor. And for the French, it's in the genes, we have the spirit of revolt. Besides, we are not really known to be very disciplined... For a large part of the French, his death was a programmed execution. Because we thought he knew too much about government. People thought he might have been part of or been employed by the secret services (I modify here my comment to clarify, in particular, because his spectacular escapes required a perfect knowledge of the people to contact, whether in prisons the man had never "frequented" before, but also with the personnel of the French administration. In most cases, he escaped pretty quickly from the prisons where he was, too quickly precisely in the eyes of public opinion). I remember on the television news at the time, the images of his execution had been broadcast. There was a lot of blood flowing in the gutter. His car was riddled with bullets. I no longer remember whether it was Paris-Match or the newspaper "VSD" which had outright published the photos of his naked corpse riddled with bullets at the time. I was young. In France, characters of this type were oddly quite common. And we followed their adventures in the evening on the 8 o'clock news on TV. Perhaps it was because we were coming out of the Indochina war and the Algerian war. These two wars had forged "hot heads". There was the hairpiece gang (Le gang des postiches - it's also an incredible story) who robbed banks for years and who taunted the police. They put on the masks of politicians (hence their nickname) or disguised themselves as Russian with the fur hat, or as Jewish rabbis, etc. They were robbing a bank and while the police came and went to see what was going on, while the police were questioning employees, witnesses, etc. ... they were in the bank directly opposite and were holding it up at the same time! incredible but true! There was also the Lyon gang (Le gang des Lyonnais) which carried out a whole series of robberies. The French connection to Marseille. There was also of course Albert Spagiarri and the heist of the century, the burglary of the "Société Générale" bank in Nice by the sewers. It was the time of the assassination of Judge Michel, but also that of Judge Renaud. All these French characters have given rise to transpositions of their history to cinema. (Sorry for my bad English) Friendly,

Fun fact: I started thinking how much this reminded me of Lupin the Third, found out Lupin the Third is based on a fictional French gentleman thief Arsène Lupin, created by Maurice Leblanc in 1905. Arsène Lupin is a literary descendant of Pierre Alexis Ponson du Terrail's fictional character Rocambole, whose adventures were published from 1857 to 1870. The French have really had a long-standing love for this archetype. Rebellion is truly engrained in French DNA. I come from a place with lots of French heritage and culture, but sadly it's being lost on my generation and on. As little as I've thought about it, this makes me really want to delve into my French heritage.

A Quebecois speaking here. I think you are right. French-Canadians have 400 years of distinct evoltion and this trait still opersst in Quebec. Even for me, it is amazing to see how much the European French just won't stop fighting. It's a personnalty trait; they are never fully satisfied, for the best and the worst. When Mesrine went in Canada to pursue his ''American Dream'', people of Quebec were fascinated bu the man!

I have a candidate for a future biographics "Klondike" Joe Boyle Gold miner, boxing promoter, hockey manager, gold magnate, soldier, diplomat, spy, lover of the Romanian queen. This guy had a wild life, from his days as just another miner in the Klondike Gold Rush, to the vast plains of Russia, where he acted as a diplomat and spy for the British Empire. This is where arguable his most famous adventure occurred. He stole the Romanian gold reserve and archives which were store at the Kremlin, from under the noses of the Soviets, using a train, lots of cunning, and a sh*t load of vodka.

What about the Barbary corsairs (your ancestors) that raided Europe non-stop for centuries? Over 1 million Europeans were enslaved and/or killed by your ancestors. That's pretty much the reason why the French invaded Algeria in the 1st place, to put an end to this. And what about the good things France brought you? You wouldn't even be a country if it weren't for France. Atrocities were committed on both sides during the French-algeria period, stop with that simplistic black-and-white thinking and please get that FLN propaganda out of your head.

So you consider the colonization of Algeria an act of defense? That's interesting, what about Ivory Coast, Indochina, Morocco and all those other countries? Countries where the natives have been abused and robbed of their country riches. If it wasn't for the pillaging and slavery committed by France, it wouldn't be such a rich country. Get that neo-colonialist OAS bull out of your head. By the way I'm white and French.
@randomperson5846
@randomperson5846 3 жыл бұрын
Here's a question joseph: do you or did you at any point live in Algeria in the past 2 years? Because if you did or at the very least did a smidgen of research, you'd know that the algerians have nothing more than disdain and hatred and fear of the fln. Do you know why? Because when France realised loss to Algeria was inevitable, they took algerian officers who turned against us and planted them within the ranks of the algerian revolutionaries with instructions to seize power as soon as possible in order to maintain the saharan desert which is full of oil. Hell, de Gualle himself said that even if France left Algeria, algeria would always follow France and he was right. This never was about the morality of colonialism and justice for the European people pal, it was about the one percent trying to get the common people to fight so they can make off with all the goods. No government cares about their people, they only care about wealth and resources with the promise of vengeance against the savage barbary corsairs being nothing more than a cover-up. I hope you take my arguments into consideration as I have with yours, and we continue to have a civil conversation. Good day.

His book was very interesting. Fascinating like one of those old Melville films. Mesrine was no ordinary crook. He was charismatic. He had built a whole moral system of his own, in order to justify his actions and lifestyle. But he wasn’t either a sociopath or a psychopath. His execution was widely discussed in France and imo, it was a fitting end for a man who chose to live that way, and also a cynical statement of failure from the law. It was like «OK, we’ll never beat him, he’ll just break out again and make us look like jerks, so this time, we’ll make sure he goes to the only place from which there’s no escape» And what made me really sorry, is that J.M. COULD have been an important and prominent figure in a normal social setting, somebody who could have done things for his community, country or even for the whole world.

Three films have been made on this legendary criminal - "Mesrine" (release feb.1984) a small budget b-movie but realistic because it was shot only 4 years after his death. -"La Chasse à l'homme" (2006), an interesting TV movie for the rivalries between police brigades during the Mesrine hunt. -The two-part biopic Death Instinct + Public Enemy #1 (2008) with Vincent Cassel.

Maybe you can do a video on the Brabant killer gang. A gang of (atleast) 3 people who played GTA in real life in the 80s in Belgium. Killing innocent people in the supermarket parking lot just before robbing vegetable-oil and coffee from the stores, just to wait on the scene afterwards until the police arrives to have good old-fashioned shoot-out with them before escaping. They killed 28 people on various robberies and were never caught
