Katie Puckrik moved from the East Coast to the UK in 1984, becoming a dancer on a Pet Shop Boys tour and presenter of Channel 4’s The Word with Mark Lamarr and Terry Christian in 1991. She’s now a broadcaster and singer, playing the part of Iggy Pop in the band Lust For Life she formed with Clem Burke and Glen Matlock. She talks here about the first records and bands she loved …
… the song she wrote on discovering female Beatle fans thought Jane Asher was “the devil”.
... interviewing Demi Moore and Barry White, one charming, the other prickly.
… playing a Rod Stewart single to a fourth-form teacher who wore patent leather ankle boots.
… why TV show The Word was “a petri dish for every trend we now understand in the world of social media”.
… the full, up-close impact of David Cassidy’s “perky little hindquarters in a denim dungareed outfit”.
… playing Iggy pop in the Lust For Life band: “the filth and the fury of a middle-aged woman tackling the testosterone-fuelled bratty rage of a 29 year-old man”.
… singles bought at the Penguin Feather record store in Virginia.
… XTC, the Au Pairs, Buzzcocks, the Damned and other bands she loved as an NME-reading 100 per cent Anglophile.
… “17 Broadway shows rolled into one”: life and things worn as a dancer on the Pet Shop Boys Performance tour.
… seeing the Police play the Atlantic Bar in DC in ‘77 to an audience of 25.
… and Kingdom Come, her new band playing PJ Harvey, Magazine, Gang of Four, Hole and Television.
