Love the positivity. But may I suggest a longer board for you? It’s far easier to practice when the board is more user friendly and easier to paddle catch waves early. And by longer I don’t mean a funboard or log. Just a longer hybrid shortboard that works stretched out. Maybe something that’s 6’6-6’8 like mini mid6. Btw I say this with decades of experience and struggling for years on a shortboard myself until I realize I needed to size up before sizing down again. You may not realize this now but if you keep struggling on a shortboard as a beginner one day you’re gonna realize you’ve wasted years of surfing a shortboard, making tiny slow progress. When those years could have been spent practicing progressing 10x faster on a bigger board - yes even chest high and below waves. So take advantage of modern surfboard technology and get yourself a more suitable hybrid performance middy asap. You can thank me later 😊

that's funny how you ended it by asking Ryan, "should I just get a bigger board". LOL Your videos are entertaining. I know you don't want to hear this but I think you are hearing something a little different from what some are saying regarding bigger boards. You don't have to go longer to go bigger. One of my favorite things to do on smaller softer inside waves is just to go wider but in fact shorter. My normal performance board is 5'8 and about 26L. My most favorite uber groveler was the Firewire Baked Potato, 5'1. It was only 5'1 in length but it was 20.5" in width or maybe even a tad wider. the board was 29+ liters. So, 7" shorter but 3L more. the extra 2" in width creates a much easier planing surface. It caught softer waves way easier and earlier. Simple hydro dynamics. You should talk to Crescent and see if he will shape you an uber groveler. shorter, wider, and 3L more. Use it for the small waves, like the ones in this video, inside lower and/or even uppers. Uppers proper is a great high performance wave but the rest of uppers is really soft, almost too soft. Recommendations for uber grovelers: 5'2 Firewire Sweet Potato 2 (31L), Lost 5'2 Party Platter (30.5L), 5'4 Aloha Black Panda (32L). i think all of these are much shorter than your current board but likely 1.5" wider and loads more volume. When the waves get better or you are surfing the pool, your current boards seems to work well. Happy surfing jade, see you in the lineup.

Hey! I’m from California (San Clemente) and I have some tips for ur surfing, first of all I think you should try and surf for fun, no coaches or cameras just get out and have fun and don’t be hard on yourself, I also think you should work on pumping down the line before you get to turning because when you turn too early you lose the wave. And I think your board is too high volume for you to turn very well, also I think you should try and surf somewhere besides lowers. I like to surf churches because it’s really chill and not competitive, lowers is really competitive

As someone that’s taken a break from surfing for the last 6 years due to the corporate grind, these videos make the journey of returning to the water seem so much more approachable. Keep at it and don’t let the Jerry’s get the last laugh. We all had to start somewhere!

You have to understand surfing different sized boards will help your surfing overall. Look at Mikey February, he's a mid length demon and one of the best surfers in the world. you should try more liters for a change in perspective, it will make you a better surfer in all aspects.

Glad to hear you have a more positive outlook on your surfing. Still, maybe focus on being "in the moment" while surfing and not relying on video. I'm sure you remember what you did and what needs improvement. Just enjoy your coffee after a session. 👍

why assign a number to you having fun? just go out there and have fun unless you intend to enter contests or something. when out in the water all i cared about was decent waves no sharks and hopefully look sik. also in HI last i know the person on the inside has priority on the wave. uts an unsaid rule. anything else is getting cut off and wil piss peeps off.
