Hey! I removed the second video in round 2 cause I didn't want people to recreate it. Even though matches are now made with red phosphorus, I've come to learn that heating it turns it into white phosphorus, which is definitely not something you should rub your fingers in, even in small amounts. I'm disappointed in myself for not looking closer into this before doing it, and I don't want to spread this demo further on the internet. Sorry, that round one will just be 1 Truth and 1 Trash.

It's one of those things like, it's not really going to hurt you in small amounts. But you don't want people who don't understand what's really going on to try it and get you in trouble either. You can buy the paper online and I've got a video of using it to make a ping pong ball smokey, and of course, I got some comments about how my fingers are now going to fall off.

​@@unknownqwerty2525this video was edited after production because what he does in experiment 2 on Round 3 is INCREDIBLY DANGEROUS. He uses matches to create a substance called white phosphorus. This substance is not to be messed with and really dangerous when it comes in contact with skin. He said that he removed it to prevent people from trying to replicate the actions, which is good on his part.

Thanks Edit; Watched the first season now and you must have some copies of "Jongens en wetenschap" (Boys and Science). A title now unthinkable but this was in the sixties and seventies. The books were full of home and kitchen table experiments. As much as I liked those books, I love your videos.

fun fact! it is possible for an egg to float like that in only tap water. when an egg starts decomposing it produces and traps gasses which makes the egg less dense so there is a goldilock zone of time where the egg wont sink nor float but just hover

For the polarized sunglasses one, I thought that perhaps different manufacturers might cut the polarized film differently. But I'm guessing that making them this way is the standard.

Not an expert, and I actually thought the polar one was fake at first 😅 but I believe most polarized sunglasses are made this way because more reflective light is blocked that way. Like from something below you, such as being at the beach and seeing the sun's reflection in the water, or while driving (particularly if it's snowy) since the road can reflect light too at certain angles.

Yeah, this felt like not a fair video since the underlying science is good just the execution is slightly off. Like you could probably accomplish this experiment at home based on the original video if you noticed when you went to line up your glasses that they darkened when they were rotated and not straight.

Round 1: I know A is true, I've seen this demonstration before. B, I think, is at least possible. I know that fresh eggs have enough air in them that they float in water, but that they lose that air over time and eventually sink, so theoretically there is a phase in the egg's lifespan where it would be suspended in the water. That said, I'm a little dubious that that's what happening here, since that would have to be very precise, and might actually be easier to fake. In any case, I don't think C is possible. As I understand, the gelatin matrix of gummy candy is much more rigid than in something like a marshmallow, so I don't think it would expand when water is added. Verdict: B & C were both fake, and thus I'm going with E. (Well, I was right about B, but not quite in the way I was expecting. Was definitely wrong about C, though. Didn't realize gummies worked that way.) Round 2: I think A is fake. Shining light through two polarized light filters in the same orientation should have a similar effect to shining light through only one filter, since the two filters are redundant. I think B could be true, since the warm air in the bottle would be less dense than the cooler ambient air, and thus would have a lower pressure, creating a force on the water. I can see why C might be true, since a lot of food products do contain iron, and thus would interact with magnets. But I don't think grapes are particularly high in iron. So I'm gonna say it's probably fake. Verdict: A & C were both fake, and thus I'm going with E. (I feel pretty good about catching A, but was a little surprised by the result of C. Didn't realize diamagnetism worked like that.) Round 3: A does make sense. Salt is an electrolyte, graphite is somewhat conductive, so I can believe that would make a circuit to boil the water. B is a little strange, but I do know that there are some mildly volatile chemicals in striking pads, so I'm also able to believe it's true. C, however, is obviously fake. Pulling a vacuum on food doesn't cause it to shrink, if anything the corn would puff up due to the pressure imbalance. It's obviously just a magic box trick. Put in a full-size corn cob, take out a baby corn cob. Verdict: C. (YES! I FINALLY GOT ONE RIGHT!)

No! It's the other way around with eggs. A fresh egg will sink, a rotten egg will float due to gases produced by bacteria.

For round 1, I know what you mean about eggs releasing gas, but in my experience that's only when the water is hot. Does it still happen in cold water? Maybe it's just slower?

you have the egg thing the wrong way around. fresh good eggs will sink and when they start spoiling they produce gasses inside them due to the decomposition making them gradually less and less dense. so whilts its possible for an egg to float like shown in only tap water it has to be perfectly timed in the decompostional stage of the egg. source? i work on a farm where we sell eggs which you have to wash before selling

Ok so eggs actually can float perfectly, spoiled ones go to the top, good ines go to the bottem, but if you get a perfect egg, it will float like in the video. (I think)

3/3. Today's one was much easier to me than the last one. Also i screamed out loud "No way corn one is true". And i was considering smoke one to be cap... Gladly i know how polarization know so i immediately knew glasses one was fake unless i understood question incorrectly. And the first one was rather hard. Had to do elimination because i wasn't sure if egg you picked had density in just a good amount it would float in between water.

For the polarized one, it actually depends. I’ve seen some brands do vertical and some horizontal so if you get the right 2 pairs you don’t need to turn it. Otherwise, i got them all correct

that one felt a bit of a trick/rigged question. it's really a matter of orientation, unlike some of these other "trash" videos that genuinely required a set-up to produce those results. my guess is anyone even vaguely aware of how polarization filters work got tripped-up there.

What's a polarised glass? I thought it was for watching 3d movies in a theater so one eye would have vertical, and the other would have horizontal polarisation... It would behave like in the video. But if polarised glasses are sun glasses, it would be logical that they all use horizontal polarisation (or is it vertical?)

I have seen some bizarre distortions while looking through polarized sunglasses at gas pump displays. They use liquid crystal displays, which use polarizers. That's my only excuse for missing the polarized-glasses question.

With regard to the removed part of the video "White phosphorus is about as toxic as potassium cyanide but dying from it would be even more painful, white phosphorus will basically settle in your jawbones leading to necrosis and something called phossy jaw, bisphosphonates from the jaw will slowly spread leading to necrosis of the jaw within 6 months" This explanation is from thy labs so do not try to make it unless you know exactly what you're doing

For anyone wanting to try to make red cabbage indicator at home, don't worry about blending. Just cut it up into a few strips, let it soak in hot water. You can just use a sieve when pouring to get rid of the cabbage pieces. It's much easier!

Fun fact: eggs float, when they go bad. So if you are not sure if an egg is still fine, just put in water. It if is lying in there, it is perfectly fine, if it is standing up, you should eat it soon (no longer raw), if it floats, don’t eat it

The bubbles from electrolysis, while made from only water, can be lit on fire. Hydrogen burns alongside oxygen. I haven't tried it, but you probably could put the end of the bottle in a balloon and try lighting it!

For round 2, the second two are definitely possible. Although I would think that the second one would work better if he didn't leave the cap off for that long. I would re-cap it immediately after emptying it. As for the first one, it is only possible if the sunglasses have the opposite polarization, which doesn't make sense because it would defeat the whole purpose of one of the glasses.

Red cabbage actually turns yellow-green in a basic solution. Also you can't measure the exact pH, just if it's an acid, base or neutral.

By the image alone I (think) I know what you removed. B in round 2 was a very legit home science experiment in the early eighties. Mysteriously producing smoke while rubbing your fingers. And do so in a dark closet also produced some light. My mum wasn't very fond of the smell it produced. I learned so much doing all those now-forbidden experiments.

Round 1: a) true, I believe the pH indicator plant dyes are anthocyanins? b) depends on the egg, fresh eggs sink I think and old eggs float? so at some point in their lifetime they'd be neutrally buoyant? but the density within a single glass of water is not that different, so that's not the explanation, it has to do with the density of the egg relative to the water, and how big its air pocket is c) I guess this is false then, I don't remember gummy candies ever absorbing that much liquid, but I never left them that long Round 2: a) false, you have to hold them 90° to each other to see that effect, b) true, but that's way more intense than I expected it to be! c) true, they're not ferromagnetic but diamagnetism is a thing Round 3: uhhhh ... a) I can see that being true c) false, that's just baby corn

Well about the polarised sun glasses, if you take two from different brands, the polarisation plane might not be the same, as such acheiving extinction with the same overall orientation

The polarization direction on sunglasses is actually deliberate and is supposed to be vertical. This is because the light reflected off shiny horizontal surfaces (i.e. water or snow on the ground) is horizontally polarized. This allows these glasses to filter out glare from those sources. If you can block all light with two sunglasses in the same orientation, then one of them was incorrectly polarized or was made for a niche application which requires blocking vertically polarized light.

The sunglasses one is a cop-out tbh. Everyone knows you can use two polarized lenses to identify each other, so calling it false simply because of the caveat "Oop, we didn't rotate it 90 degrees, GOTCHA!" is really splitting hairs. As opposed to something that is outright faked.

0:48 The egg one is fake. Submerging eggs in water is actually a common way to test for safety. If it floats, it’s spoiled. If it sinks, it’s most likely safe. You probably faked this by layering 2 liquids of differing densities with the same refractive index in the container. 1:58 The first one is my bet, as you didn’t rotate the lenses with respect to each other to actually test for polarization. It’s possible without this step that the attenuation of light by the lenses is simply adding together, rendering your test for polarization invalid.
