My arm never feels sore the day after long tossing. However I can often feel soreness in my arm the day after simply taking grounders from shortstop and throwing to first base about 25 times. I think its great to stretch out your arm and learn how to use more of your body by long tossing rather than staying tight when you try to throw hard from shorter distances

That's great kid take advantage. I once had a great arm myself but ruined my shoulder when throwing one day and can never throw the same ever again. I didn't know what these guys are teaching I didn't care to warm up I woiod just straight up gun a baseball as far as I could my first throw lol. It was dumb and I so regret it and I use to throw over a hundred yards. I use to be able to throw a rock probly 170 yards or maybe even farther. I learned at a young age 4th grade that I could throw much farther than most grown ups so by the time I was 17 I was throwing baseballs at my high school football field from endzone to endzone and pitching in the high 80s. Now I'd be lucky to throw 40 yards and it'll feel like I thru a thousand pitches after only one throw. Take care of that arm kid.

I believe I’ve commented on this video before, but I’m now 10 yrs removed from HS baseball and I used this to gain arm strength. I was throwing foul pole to foul pole and it helped increase velocity by at-least 10 mph and helped get a few OF assists. I couldn’t really hit and my arm was my best asset. I never did the J-bands part but I ran and stretched beforehand

I'm a speedy outfielder, and the arm is the one things scouts don't like much about me. I've been long tossing for a year or two extensively, and I'm still only hovering around 77-78. I never thought of long tossing this way, with consistent arc and looseness until the pulldowns. I'll have to try it for a few months and see if I can get into the low or mid 80's.

This is perfect for just about any age past 12. The point he's making is this is the healthy way to go about it, your goal isn't to go throw 300+ the first time out. Slowly backup until you feel you're reaching your limit, Don't max out your first few outtings. We did this all the time Jr. High and High. I moved and my coach never had us practice long toss and no one knew how to do it correctly. 2 years later, I went from have a rubber arm to a destroyed shoulder.

@mattvorwald15 жыл бұрын
If you consider the mound slopes at 4.76 degrees, but the total slope from a standard mound of 10 inches height over 726 inches (home to rubber) is only 0.79 degrees.... pitching off a mound is essentially similar to throwing at a 3.97 degree UPWARD angle. This is what long toss simulates. It takes a max effort delivery on flat ground and elevates the release several degrees to mimick the upward angle of actual pitching.

Totally agree with you...I have no clue how to throw hard or strengthen my arm...and I am irrelevant....but I am man enough to admit it. I do know that some of the greatest coaches and players in the world endorse this program and the endorsements on the Jaeger websites attest to that...it seems like the few people who try to criticize this program just ignore the statements from active players and coaches......maybe those players and coaches do not know anything either....

I went out today and applied these methods to my workout. Got up to 330ft of high arc long toss. Then on the pulldown phase i started at 200 ft throwing no more than head high. I felt stronger than i have in a long time. Felt really loose throwing from 200 feet on a rope. Felt even better from 100, then at 60 feet i felt like i was really bringing it, no radar gun today though. Next week i'll radar it and post it on youtube. If i had to guess, i'd say i was throwin 89-90 today.

@traey17756 жыл бұрын
They are throwing off a crow hop. Pitching from the mound, they are 90mph at best. I agree, they are preaching outdated baseball wisdom that is the opposite of what Brent at Top Velocity and John Madden on KZbin talk about.
@nicholasdamiani57026 жыл бұрын
They would throw just as hard off a mound..When you throw on flat ground even with a crow hop you get no downward force from momentum..I throw harder off the mound than even if I were to crow hop.
@TheWholeMatt16 жыл бұрын
This is a good program, long toss by itself isn't very effective for pitchers as the mechanics of long toss are different than when pitching from a mound, but in the "pulldown phase" is where it really helps out with pitchers mechanics. Focusing on throwing it flatter with a lower release point. Great conditioning program.
@RIP2zone14 жыл бұрын
@biolinquin the teorical explanation to that is the angle of the ball the grip of the ball, etc, if you hold the ball too tight it will be going down as it breaks the air, and if you trow it to high it will fall short, is like throwing a football, you dont need to be like ronnie coleman to throw it hard or long, it comes to technique

The Texas Rangers adopted this method for their pitchers a couple of years ago, and since have had the fewest starting rotation pitcher's injuries in baseball. They really had no injuries to ANY of their starters this year, aside from blisters. I don't look down on this program at all. I think it's going to be widely adopted very soon if it continues to work out well for the Rangers and other MLB teams who adopt this program.

@IcingInTMikes13 жыл бұрын
@stalkervision. Our college coaches have us use this program at our school and the point of having the pitchers throw long toss is to teach them to use their whole body when they are throwing to get the maximum out of each throw and that translates into them using everything they have when pitching from the mound. This program works so before you and everyone who agrees with you comes on here and talks it down because you were never good at baseball, get your facts straight.

It's not necessary to throw more than 200 feet (~ 70 yards) in these drills to maximize the effect of the method. In fact, throwing more than say 180 feet (60 yards) can promote more harm than good for many players as some are infielder-oriented and some more outfielder-oriented (where the longer toss would be more to the task). Just some advice from a former pro baseball player turned physics professor.

@drivelinebaseball No one promoting long toss will tell you that it's a guarantee your arm won't get injured. Pitching puts torque on your arm it is not meant to withstand. Some people have naturally stronger arms than others. Long toss will strengthen your arm, but if you have a genetically weak link in there, it can break no matter what. Long toss can help, but it's not a cure-all or a sure thing. As to McCarney, he had a rash of personal problems after HS, not arm problems.
