It was meant to be a poetic and heartbreaking ending, and it could be said that the Greens won, because no queen would sit on the Iron Throne and rule, it would always go to the first male, as the Greens wanted (it's not like they went to war out of respect for the laws of men and gods), but their line would not Never to sit on the Iron Throne, the Hightowers who thought they would rule, the power they thought they would have and the glory of their house they will never have, the Black Line will sit on the Iron Throne, but the cause and rightful Queen they fought the war for has become an "Usurper Princess", a woman who never knew In her rightful place, she will never sit on the Iron Throne, and no queen will ever sit on it after her, whether by the word of the king or by the laws of men and gods. No one will accept a queen on the Iron Throne from now on, but her "legitimate" children will rule from now on. Whether you support the Greens or the Blacks, the Targaryens have lost the one thing that allowed them to rule the continent, the dragons. The only ones who will benefit are the lords of Westeros. This has become Fair game, what a terrible end, but they brought it upon themselves through their own stupidity. What did they think would happen? Now children and the rest of the continent are paying the price.

That being said, the whole thing could've been avoided if Otto Hightower had just been yeeted to the Wall instead of being entertained for pimping out his teen daughter and said teen daughter should've just been kept far away from court. @MrFredstt that's true. Viserys was often indecisive and allowed people like Otto Hightower to manipulate him. If he'd been a lot firmer and concrete in his ruling/naming Rhaenerya heir (or even better, having Rhaenerya rule day-to-day as Princess while he was still alive, but that can also be partly due to Rhaenerya leaving KL for Dragonstone... which again kinda brings us back to Viserys needing to have shut Alicient and Otto down HARD with the crap they pulled (Maegor the Cruel, for example, would've probably done MUCH worse to Alicent for half the crap she pulled. Hell, even Jaeherys would've shut her down or more likely shut OTTO down from the get go). I think there's also a fair point to be made of a running theme with the Targaryens: they bucked numerous Westerosi customs and traditions in Aegon's conquest, and even more with Jaeherys' rule. One huge one they absolutely should have been stronger on bucking was having a Queen sit the Iron Throne. If Jaeherys had stuck to his word of making Aemon and his children the heir(s) Rhaenys would've been queen. For such a decisive leader overall, he really dropped the ball on that one (especially because Rhaenys was seen as an heir-apparent by many including Queen Alysanne). In allowing the Council to decide the heir rather than just flat-out naming Rhaenys heir, the Targaryens created the beginnings of a rift within their dynasty (that we could later say influenced the eventual Dance of the Dragons). Aegon the Conquerer was able to take almost all of Westeros (sans Dorne) under his rule because he and his sisters had dragons. Aegon, Rhaenys, and Visenya ruled together (and all three were dragon-riders), regardless of traditions regarding women ruling. In allowing the Council to decide the next heir, Jaeherys misstepped and allowed the realm to dictate Targaryen inheritance, thus weakening the dynasty as a whole. Dragons allowed them to rule, but forgetting that Targaryen women ALSO rode Dragons (and thus could hold the same power) meant creating a rift/resentment that would be easily exploited by outside influences eager to either reshape or completely destroy the Targaryen house.

I had heard of the theory that the little bride was killed. The Hand of the King, Unwin Peak had a young daughter who was friends with the two and believed that his daughter would be chosen next. No one knows , but Peak was disappointed. All of the lords demanded that their daughters be considered also. The girls were all broght to a grand ball to be introduced to the newly widowed young king. The one who stood out was a Stark. She was lead into the room on horseback led by Lord Stark proclaiming that he had come to present the king with his new bride. The king said that she was very very pretty. And she was the one he chose.

Peake was doing a Hightower (or Lannister/ Tyrell- long before their time in power), trying to monopolise the Court/ important positions, & access to the King- but the rest of the Small Council, & anyone with eyes was like, "We are *not* going along with this." He was forced to give way to the 'cattle show', where any eligible maiden could come to Kingslanding & be presented- meaning he & his daughter would not have a free ride to the throne - & he was definitely not happy about it; in the lead up to the event *_a lot_* of prospective girls fell ill, were disgraced, had 'accidents' that injured & even killed them- so many that it was nicknamed 'the Maiden's Day Curse'. Because Peake's daughter had been at Court for so long, the young pair were the most familiar with one another- so Peake was counting on that. Of the girls that were presented to the young king- very few were standouts (I don't recall a Stark being one of them), & Peake hoped that his daughter's presence & familiarity would be enough to put her over the line... however, the young king's half-sisters, Baela & Rhaena snatched victory at the very last moment- presenting their prospect to the king, their young kinswoman, Daenaera Velaryon- *she* was who Aegon III chose.

Lord Stark marches on the south with his northermen to avenge Rhaenyra, then put her son (with Daemon) on the throne. The blacks didn’t win the dance technically the greens won when Ageon killed Rhaenyra although Ageon was assassinated shortly after and Ageon the younger was the only male Targaryen alive since his younger brother was presumed dead so it went to him and that’s why they had Ageon III marry Ageon II’s last living child, so no one really won in the end.
