"Unlike other strategy games such as the XCOM series, Jagged Alliance 3 will not inform players regarding the chance to hit an opponent or their responses to attack. The team believed the franchise should be about responding to unpredictable and chaotic combat situations, and an over-abundance of information may cause players to be too cautious and calculating"

I mean, I can see value in that. I'm definitely prone to over-analyzing situations in games like that and this change could indeed lead to a different playstyle. And JA2 didn't have hitchances either. However, I bet that there will be a mod for that sooner or later :)

I understand that point of view, but my issue is that a shot at the hand has as many + and - as a shot at the head or torso most of the time. Then why would i ever go for the hand if a headshot is apparently the same. (played the closed beta and it didnt click for me, despite loving Xcom and other tactical turnbased games)

@@eXistenZ15 i'd say a hand is harder to target than a head... so gameplay wise, its a problem since like you said... why would you target a hand over a head when its the same bonus? MASSIVE fan of the 1996 original. Still to my mind one of the best ensemble casts in a video game to date. Hard to appreciate the insane amount of work individualized voice actors take up in terms of production. Haven't watched the video yet, but I'm telling you- if the Mercs don't have their own voices, this game will be just another soulless husk. I'd love to see turn-based combat games like this introduce a "moving hazard" unit that moves on the battlefield after every action the characters take but before the action is resolved. They'd be things like panicked citizens, flocks of birds, cattle/horses/cars in traffic, walls of smoke, falling trees or burning cloth, etc. By default the direction they are facing/moving is completely obscured, but with higher automatic skill checks by each character ("Situational Awareness Skill" or sumthin), they can get more info about the hazard such as direction moving (i.e. possible next 3 tiles moving to), exact tile moving through, and their likely general path across the battlefield (highest skill assessment). Because the hazard moves after an action is set but before it's resolved, it could potentially move in front of the target and cause a penalty to the hit (even killing civilians), but the player or AI won't know unless they rolled high on their automatic assessment or until after they've taken the shot. It'd introduce some great realism and extra strategy into these snype vs snype fights and make them seem to have far more action going on.
@Mgaak
@Mgaak 10 ай бұрын
Good idea, this would create a much more lively and chaotic scenario. This could be also applied for the player characters and enemies: imagine something similar, but mix it with a mechanic of "Superhot", where only actions take time and in between them time nearly stands still.

Love the "Visit Arulco" ads :) JA2 (with the 1.13 mod) is one of my favorite games of all time, and a testament to what a good community can do to the longevity of a game. I hope this edition does it justice, unlike the previous few attempts. Though, that scramble turn is something they really should have avoided... Also, any starting team that doesn't have at least a few among Igor, Ice, Blood, Thor and Wolf is doing things wrong. :)

What a hit of nostalgia! JA 1 and 2 were my favourite games in college and grad school respectively. And it looks like most of the roster from the second game has returned, albeit with a different art style. There were a number of cost efficient mercs, like Barry and Steroid, who developed relatively quickly and were deceptively good for their low level. The targeting circles are a JA convention. The smaller the radius you can achieve when adding AP to the aim action, the more assured you are of a hit. The lack of precise information was something that you just accepted back in the day. It was only later that mods added the option to view the percentage chance to hit. Looks like the devs are trying to hew to some of those old mechanics. I assume that more voice acting will be added later. Some of it, in the old games, was pretty humorous and distinctive. Steroid sounded like a Schwarzenegger-like bodybuilder. Blood Hanson was distinctly South African. I recall a character, La Malice, who had a strong Québécois accent and spoke in a funny patois. This was quite memorable to me, as I was living in Montreal at the time (where, incidentally, some of the original developers originated. Sir-Tech was a Canadian company). As for JA3’s setting, it is very much in line with the fictional banana republics of previous entries- Metavira and Arulco. “Grand chien” (“big dog”) is quite a name for a country. Fits right into the JA aesthetic.

The aiming system looks similar to how it was in JA2. You'd spend more APs to aim more, but there's never a percentage chance displayed, either. It all depended on mercs marksmanship skill, line of sight, health/gun condition, and many other factors. So that way game mechanics never give a false promise to make every shot an absolute, and also puts an emphasis on strategizing and handling more stressful combat situations better. (Until you have an entire squad with skill levels of 80-90 and over with top grade equipment, at least).

Finally. I think it's the best game ever made. I discovered it in 2002 with JA2 and JAUB. I was 30 years old at the time, and I think I played it for about 3-4 years. Then a lot of mods came out. I was still playing many of those mods until about 4-5 years ago. Now I'm 51 years old, and I can't wait to play this game. I have my MacBook with me, but when I get home, the first thing I'll do is buy this game and play it on my PC. I watched KZbin videos to see the new features. Unfortunately, it seems that creating your own character is no longer possible. I think it was a fantastic feature. Maybe it will be added later in the process, and with new mods, the game will become even better. Thank you in advance to everyone involved in its development.

The hit percentages missing is an intentional design decision. They want you to not cherry pick shots and go with the flow, the same way older JA games did. If it's anything like the older games, the mercs will and should give you audio clues about if you are about to take an unlikely shot. I think a good compromise would be a system where the game just tells you the chance of hitting by saying High or Low when you aim. That way you'd not get a direct number but a suggestion about the odds. Should really take a peek at the I.M.P page too to make your custom mercs.

@LasOrveloz

JA2 didn't have a percentage chance either, it was a cone where within the shot will land and aiming better and with better skills and better gear just made the cone narrower. Phoenix point has similiar aiming system.

what I find annoying is that all enemies are armed but you can rarely pick up their weapons. I can understand tho' that the guns they use in the early game are among the worst the game has to offer & also likely to be rather poor condition. Also, unless RNG only gives them 1 or 2 rounds, after which they run dry, they should all be dropping ammo. JA 1&2 was like this; early game you could gorge yourself on all the beat-up snubnose .38's you could handle AND get another 6 or 12 spare .38 cartridges to boot. There ought to be lots & lots of loot that is simply not worth your time carrying.

I remember in JA2, it was an option that you could turn on. By default it was turned off. I would imagine that it makes the run harder if the enemies didn't drop everything what they had, but I personally liked it more to have that turned on lol.

@@HayashiKaiji you get soooooo loaded up with gear after the first few game days. I liked the Urban Chaos Mod practice of just being able to sell unwanted junk onscreen for pennies on the dollar compared to hauling it around to merchants that paid more. You could get rid of just the massive amounts of junk that way.

@@HayashiKaiji Not even an option. It's part of the unofficial patch 1.13 (sorta modpack) and that allowed you to turn on "drop all", even for the friendly Milita. At that point sector inventories became 10+ page monstrosities quickly.

@@HayashiKaiji The original unmodded JA2 had a "Tons of Guns" option you could toggle, but I forget how it changed the game. 1.13 mod had the option to make every enemy poop out all their inventory on death.
@MrEtheric

@@Plantgrowth Tons of Guns just added more gun variations to the game. The FAMAS (which I loved in JA2) for example was not in the game unless tons of guns was active. The hardcore way to get guns more easily in the base game was to knock people out (by reducing all their stamina IIRC), without killing them, and then take the gun from them before they died. Seemed completely dumb to me, but the super hard core mods were build around it.

Those were HTML v1 advertising banners at the bottom of the browser window. Usually gifs for compact size (and later limited animation). Yes, nowadays that space is usually occupied by companies related to the website, but back in the day, those were primitive adds. One is a parody of AOL which was on a lot of sites back then.

Hitman rocks!!!!! I still put Hitman in my XCOM2 games. His lines are hilarious. My son was 2 when I started playing Jagged Alliance and even he still remembers Hitmans lines when I say them now. Theres also a dynamic between Hitman, Raven, and Raider. Raider and Raven are married and were cops. Hitman was connected to the mob. He also had the hots for Raven and flirted with her on missions and Raider would make remarks about how he was going to kick his ass if he didnt stop fliting with her. Hey, you know the joke..."Why do you use a .45?" "Because they dont make a .46!"

I like that they don't show percentages. In fact, if there's anything negative I saw about this, it's the HUD elements, showing cover etc. I realize folks these days are used to everything being spelled out ala XCOM remake etc., but those discarded something of the original feeling of being able to shoot anything, uncertainty of cover, hitting etc. I venture to say that's more realistic - in a real fight we wouldn't know hit and cover chances etc. Happy to see the team respecting the original DNA.

Hey Splatty, I think you're confusing Jagged Alliance 1 with Jagged Alliance 2 in this video. The original Jagged Alliance is a 1994 game. it didn't age very well. Then the massively popular sequel came out in 1999. In 2012 a remake of Jagged Alliance 2 called Jagged Alliance: Back In Action came out, but that didn't make a lot of waves.
