Heads up guys just done the wheel nut on my x type (same nut) after a garage had hammered mine on so tight with a rattle gun I sheared it off trying to undo it. What I did was get a good quality hole cutter (I used a starret ) 22mm or 7/8 and removed the piolet drill. Now the ID of the cutter was the same size as the stump left on the nut this centred the cutter. I just cut the top off the nut!!!! The washer came off with it and the threaded part just unscrewed. No damage to the stud or wheel and only took 10 mins.

Used the same starrett 20mm hole cutter myself last weekend. Set drill to a low speed and it quickly, efficiently and most importantly cut the head off the washer that the sheared nut left behind. 2 drilled out in around half an hour no fuss or drama. Kit £55 from screwfix or £20 for drill and arbour. No need to struggle!!!
@tonymango36683 жыл бұрын
Used the 20mm hole cutter worked like a dream. Also I think this might not be an over tightening issue by the garage... I think corrosion sets in between the nut, washer and wheel. This expands the metal and is such increases the pressure on the nut assembly, thus greatly increasing the torque required to remove/break the nut off...

Had this happen at work a few times on Jags where they’ve previously been put on bollock tight with an air gun. The chrome outer is just a sleeve and what I’ve done before with success is drilled a hole through the sleeve as the nuts are hollow all the way to the stud and a mixture of penetrating oil and a butane torch with a fine jet on it 👍🏼

Mate, thanks for this video. Also found on another video, you can use a 20mm hole saw and drill it until it hits the washer. Then the wheel pulls off and you use some mole grips to take the remains of the stud. Brilliant video nonetheless
@purchaseaccount2041 Жыл бұрын
Think the information here is a bit confusing, is it the rattle gun or Jag that muffed up? Real reason is that the steel nuts and alloy wheel create a reaction and the sleeve part of the nut fuses with the wheel. Secondly the design of the nut doesn’t allow huge forces for removal. Had some tyres fitted, nuts torqued, month later two snapped on removal. Nothing to do with rattle gun!

In the middle of this at the moment. I've found the easiest way. After 2 sets of bits, I used a protruding sanding belt that's supposed to be for bodywork. Just ground the stud and nut washers off. 2 hours per nut and you don't have to press on it.
