Great video. I at first thought cam timing was off as a valve could have been hitting piston on that engine. I am not a mechanic but am about to purchase a 2006 xk8 or at least thinking about it. One of the best looking cars. I have a whole list of things that happen to one of these and you just added one more. Great job in finding that out. A bit scary though and costly.

I am currently in the process of removing all the soft stuff to get the right side head off to change out couple valves (hopefully the sum total) after having the cam tensioner break on my 56K mile car. I knew I should have checked it sooner as the car was already 10 years old at the time. Procrastination is a dish best not served at all. I have worked on Jags for almost 20yrs now and if you now the trouble models (usually a couple year span at a time) and areas, you can have your Jaguar last you forever mostly trouble free. I have put my wife in Jags for the last 12 years and once I had to change a transmission (04 VDP) but that was the biggest personal vehicle issue until now, other than the tensioner deal above. Which again, I knew it was the weak link (pun here) in the car and had many chances to check. Never assume you will have a warning or some noise before it goes. Mine engine purred until that very day in the parking lot.

Wow! Thanks for posting this. Now I know that it's not always the timing chain. People always tell you that a Jaguar just needs a timing chain, when instead, you might be better off pulling out the entire engine! Legendary!
@JulianMerghart9 жыл бұрын
lhivier Sorry man but yes, you should be sorry to come over on someone else's video and say it's amateur. How many useful videos did you post? Oh let's see... none! Also, this car clearly needs a piston and rod rebuild, and you are saying it's amateur. To the OP, is that correct? It's a brilliant video that someone took the time to post this. What it means is that if you hear a knock on a Jaguar it's JUNK! Can the OP comment on taking the engine out? Is that easier because I don't know. What I do know is that ELECTRIC CARS are the future, and these cars are great donors for that cause.

Wow!!! Read my other response, customer towed the car to my shop and asked me to install timing chain for him since he did not know how to do it, there was no complaints just install timing chain, after we install timing chain it all cleared out why he opened the engine to begin with....

Bro if you replaced the rod bearing where did you find the bearings?! I can’t find them anywhere. I have a 2001 LS 3.9

I have a 2009 Jaguar XF and it was warming up after I fixed the heads and changed the head gaskets, I already removed them and apparently everything is fine, I see that the gaskets do not have holes where the water passes to the heads and I see in the videos that are also the same, that advice can give me. Thank you.

My Jaguar XF 3.0D 2012 makes a very similar noise, but the sound clearly comes from top of engine. do you remember where this sound was coming from?

Hello Mr David J. thanks a bunch for your efforts into the tube. I have a question about the fix to correct this particular engine knock. was it a rod bearing? or bad piston? worn crankshaft?" all of the above... much appreciated.? new oil pump necessary? new HG set

Hi, I have a little engine noise on my X5, and it was diagnosed as a piston axis fail. Now it sleeps into the garage. I'd like to know before opening the engine is it possible to do a last trip with (about 1000km)? ;)

would you recommend me put a remanufactured , reconditioned or used engine in my car?

All depends on your budget, if you find a good used one with low miles and reputable source it would be your best option

Looks and sounds like a bad connecting rod bearing. Or could be the wrist pin in the piston. Hopefully it is just the bearing insert that has failed and that it did not bugger up the crankshaft. At the very least looks like you will have to drop the oil pan and undo the con rod bolts and push the piston/rod assembly out the top of the block. Assuming that you can get the pan off the engine with it in the car. Seeing as you have already removed the heads, drained the coolant, removed the headers, pulling the engine and putting in on a stand where you can work on it at a convienent angle and see what you you are doing might be the easiest course. Good luck.

got the same issue, gonna try to drop the pan on the cat. Good looking out on the great tech videos. BIG DAVE M

To me it didn't sound like a rod bearing knock as we aren't there but yes either wrist pin or rod bearing. I have rarely seen a bad bearing that didn't ruin/scuff the crank and maybe ruin the rod, that's tough to have 2 shops look at it then find out it needs MUCH more work, removing/replacing the crank is very expensive Fancy cars like that are expensive toys and need to be repaired by guys who know their job 100%

Exactly how long have you been a technician? An experienced professional would have isolated this with a listening tool like a stethoscope or my favorite, a Phillips screwdriver with a long solid auto antenna on the end of it. This would have told you that it was on the bottom end, and that it was toward the front. Then a professional would have opted to pull the oil pan, which is much simpler than removing both heads. this would have given you a clear view of the rod, which obviously, has a spun bearing, and damaged rod cap (judging by the distance the piston moved) and galled crankshaft (all of which I'm sure you found once you actually removed the pan, which you should have known to do from the test that any mechanic, with any training or experience would have known to do.. Pulling the pan would be just a verification of what an experienced mechanic would have recognized by the sound, location and accompanying squeak that went with it. (depending on the customer, it might have been better to save him the teardown labor and replace or the engine that you already knew was trash. I hope the dealership fired you for wasting theirs, and the customer's time and money. It is half assed parts changers like you who give the rest of us a bad name. If you want to be a tech, GO TO SCHOOL AND LEARN THE TRADE FIRST, instead of filling a position that should be taken by someone who actually knows something about the job.
