Pre-Islam "Mecca" was civilized and had strong warriors compared to many places in the region at that time. However, the level of civilization paled in comparison to the Romans and the Persians. This makes the Islamic conqeusts of Rome and Persia all that much more miraculous.

Some archaeologists say that the origin of the Semites in the Assyrians, Babylonians, Sumerians, and Canaanites were originally Arab peoples who migrated from the Arabian Peninsula. Do not forget that the Persians dominated the land of Mesopotamia and inherited the Babylonian and Assyrian civilizations, while the Romans occupied the lands of the Levant and Egypt, and they were among the most advanced peoples in civilization. The Levant, Egypt, Babylon, and Assyria are peoples at the pinnacle of civilization, inherited by the Persians and Romans with their devastating armies. Likewise, the culturally rich Arab kingdoms in the Levant and Iraq desert were destroyed by these two empires.

Exactly. There might be some exagerration from the scholars on the backwardness of jahilliya, but the brothers here swung the other way. I mean the arabs didnt even have a proper calendar or script (they were using a nabatean script).... Come on. They talk of civilisation but cant even point to a hallmark of civilisation amongst the people of the hejaz or the arabs at large.

It’s also a question of nationalism. Many civilisations that became monotheistic also do an opposite thing and suppress their culture to laud and uplift their pagan roots in an effort to promote nationalism. Look at people like isambard kingdom Brunel and the sheer amount of pagan iconography in British culture.

It is not for Muslim sheiks or scholars to conclude the jahilia period that there has been nothing in arabia because just like Europe was in dark ages once in recent times, Arabia was also in dark age with no mentionable civilization at that time, you can talk about ancient period but this time it is clear that they have been in dark age and emerged to global prominence only after Islma took hold

After Saudi Arabia opened the door to archaeologists, what is true about archaeology has now been changed in three sites in the Arabian Peninsula. Like the first domestication of the horse, it was in Central Asia in archaeology, but after the discovery of the Kingdom of Maqar in Najd, it appeared that the history of the domestication of the horse in the Arabian Peninsula is older than in Central Asia. Three-dimensional drawings of a camel were discovered in the Sakaka region, which is the oldest in the world, and this proves that the Arabs were pioneers in three-dimensional drawings. The Almustatil civilization was discovered in the Hijaz region and is the oldest civilization in the eyes of archaeologists There are still great efforts in trying to discover what the Arabs had before Islam. Saudi Arabia is considered a treasure for archaeologists because it is perhaps the last country that allows archaeological excavations on a very large scale The Arabic alphabet preceded the Egyptian alphabet, which is considered one of the greatest civilizations, and Arabic writings are filled in the mountains of the Arabian Peninsula for periods of time that Dr. Eid Al-Yahya says are about 7,000 years. Regarding urbanization, I do not think anyone can ignore Petra, Mada’in Saleh, Palmyra, Sheba, and the caves of Shuaib as one of the most important archaeological sites in the world. In astronomy, the Arabs were among the most brilliant peoples in this science before Islam. In literature, the Arabs were the most famous people in poetry and oratory. Therefore, ancient Arab urban monuments are available for visiting, ancient Arabic writings exist thousands of years before Islam, Arab knowledge of astronomy and poetry is well known, and archeology discoveries in Saudi Arabia every year bring new surprises. Some people try to portray Arabs as nomads in the desert who have tents and camels and do not have any civilizational advantages. But when an American is proud of herding cows, a Turk is proud of herding horses, or a Russian is proud of herding reindeer, it is as if herding animals has become a disgrace to the Arabs because they herd camels. Although camels are the most valuable animal to the Arabs of all the animals mentioned, and the Arabs had horses, cows, and others, they preferred camels because they fit into their commercial life, conquest, providing food and drink, and building their homes. In some countries, raising donkeys, mules, and pigs was famous for them, but they try to belittle the Arabs because they herd camels! I did not understand this problem among Arab haters and I cannot understand it. Our brothers in Somalia know the value of camels just as we know them as Arabs. Among the Arabs are those who live in cities such as Mecca, Medina, Taima, Najran, Al-Ula, Al-Yamamah, etc. Some of them live in high mountains and practice rain-fed agriculture, and some of them graze camels in the deserts or cows in the Sarawat mountain range, or raise sheep, etc. Pastoralism is one of the professions of almost all peoples of the world. One of the biggest defects of the Arabs is tribal fanaticism, which did not help in uniting them, as was the case with the Persians and Byzantines before Islam, and Islam is what united the Arabs on one banner and perfected their noble morals. Much of what is called ignorance among the Arabs before Islam is true and is ignorance of the religion of Islam and its law, and this applies to all peoples and is not limited to the Arabs. Much of what is criticized about the Arabs before Islam existed among other peoples and even exists now among peoples that we see as civilized in Western countries. But usually, Arab sheikhs try to highlight some of the faults and mistakes that Arabs had before Islam, and the non-Arab brothers do not search for their history and mistakes before Islam and how Islam changed them for the better. Social and moral errors are natural to exist as long as the law of the Creator does not exist.

Salman was sold into slavery while in Sham and taken to Medina where he would meet the prophet (SAW) directly. Salman (RA) being a Christian probably wasn’t that big of a deal since a lot of the slaves coming from that area were Christians as well. I hope that clears it up!

I have to say I understand where these brothers are coming from, but I can see it from a few other points of view aswell.. but for instance the story of Julaybib r.a. no tribe would claim him after he was martyred.. and the Prophet s.a.w buried him himself and said he will be raised with him on the day of qiyamat.. What about people who dont know who their father or mother or both are.. some may not know their heritage.. what about orphans.. or mixed race people.. makes you feel a bit left out.. and I believe the Prophet lived that and felt it.. He knew.. he might not of had modern technology or knowledge of modern sciences but I believe he knew how it feels to be left out.. to some people their race their tribe is everything and it influences every facet of their lives.. Its shallow especially when you know what its like to have no links to any race or tribe.. The Prophet s.a.w made al-Aws and Al-khasraj merge to get rid of these traits.. remember with names and even traditions the Prophet s.a.w only said to change them when they were bad names or stop traditions that were bad .. If it was good he kept it.. The Prophet s.a.w was not ignorant.. their is indeed great wisdom in him whether we can see it or not.. the story of Al-Khidr teaches us this.. sometimes we are limited and we perceive things wrong.. the Prophet s.a.w would encourage good things from before Islamic times but if it was bad he would refer to it as a Jahilliyah trait.. like the incident of Abu-Dhar Al-Ghifari..

I find this conversation confusing. You kept repeating the word civilization, asserting that Arabs had civilization before the Prophet, but you did not provide examples or evidence of these civilizations. You reiterated multiple times that there were Arab Christians and Jews, but it's unclear how this makes them civilized if their scriptures were distorted. Another point is that even if there were civilized Arabs in the North or the South of Arabia, the Arabs that the Prophet ﷺ dealt with were in Mecca and Medina, and most of them were idol worshipers. The greatest followers of the Muhajireen and Ansar mainly came from those Arabs who were neither Christians nor Jews, and who committed most of the barbaric deeds our guest mentioned. There are many authentic narrations in the Quran and Sunnah that depict the Arabs in Mecca committing Wa’d Albanat, marrying their mothers-in-law, and lacking literacy. These were the Arabs that the Prophet dealt with, and the earliest Muslims came from among them. So, the narrative that the guest kept criticizing remains unrefuted. I find the guest's method of criticizing other scholars without providing clear and valid evidence very problematic, and I really question his knowledge and credibility in this field. By the way, the story of Alhubab ibn Almunthir in Badr is not authentic.

Doesn’t the popularity of Mecca as a site of worship and the centre of many religious groups prove that it was massively civilised? I mean there are reports of people coming from India. And Allah alludes to commerce as well in surah Quraish, so not just a religious tourism civilisation. It was connected with the romans, Persians as well as the early silk trade. I think the points being made are from a historical and social perspective. Nations rise and fall. A sign of the fall is decadence rather than barbarism. This bit is true. So we’re the Quraish barbaric or decadent? By all accounts they were decadent; they didn’t work and met in dar ul nadwa to discuss opinions all day amongst an elite group and even disliked manual labour. So they were civilised in their own way, relative to their own position. There is another crazy point: the ‘barbaric deeds’ mentioned are very much prevalent in our society today. Because the message of syyidna ‎ﷺ is for all time. Therefore the culture/civilisation of quraishi Mecca (ayyam jahiliyyah) was a microcosm of all societies to come in the future, in order to be an usool to judge between right and wrong. That’s why we don’t take sharah min qablana.

@@Historyun I wasn't really referring to yourself, my comment was a reply to another comment. Nonetheless, I think the difference of opinion is just based on a relative viewpoint. Meaning relative to the local environment there was a form of "Civilization" but relative to a macro viewpoint it can be said it was underdeveloped. What's funny is this so called narrative that he is debunking at the beginning of the video he partly concedes to it in the middle. Furthermore, his "debunking" is based on his extrapolation from studying sociology. The narrative that he is trying to debunk is proven through hadith as shown below: قَالَتْ : فَعَدَّدَ عَلَيْهِ أُمُورَ الْإِسْلَامِ، فَصَدَّقْنَاهُ، وَآمَنَّا بِهِ، وَاتَّبَعْنَاهُ عَلَى مَا جَاءَ بِهِ، فَعَبَدْنَا اللَّهَ وَحْدَهُ، فَلَمْ نُشْرِكْ بِهِ شَيْئًا، وَحَرَّمْنَا مَا حَرَّمَ عَلَيْنَا، وَأَحْلَلْنَا مَا أَحَلَّ لَنَا، ...So it was Ja'far ibn Abi Talib who spoke to him, and he said to him: 'O King! We were a people in a state of ignorance, worshipping idols, eating carrion, and committing indecencies. We would cut off ties of kinship, be unkind to our neighbors, and the strong among us would exploit the weak. We were in this state until Allah sent to us a Messenger from among ourselves, whose lineage, truthfulness, trustworthiness, and chastity we knew. He called us to Allah, to affirm His Oneness and worship Him alone, and to abandon the worship of stones and idols which we and our forefathers had been practicing. He commanded us to speak the truth, fulfill trusts, maintain ties of kinship, be good to our neighbors, and refrain from forbidden acts, bloodshed, and indecencies. He forbade us from false speech, devouring the wealth of orphans, slandering chaste women, and he ordered us to worship Allah alone without associating any partners with Him, and to perform the prayer, give the zakah, and fast.' He said: 'He enumerated for him the matters of Islam, and we believed in him and followed him in what he brought, so we worshipped Allah alone and did not associate anything with Him, and we prohibited what He had prohibited for us and permitted what He had permitted for us.' Musnad Ahmad 1740 This one hadith is enough to dismantles his answer for Umar RA statement.

Aishah, the wife of the Prophet (ﷺ) told him that there were four types of marriage during Pre-Islamic period of Ignorance. One type was similar to that of the present day i.e. a man used to ask somebody else for the hand of a girl under his guardianship or for his daughter's hand, and give her Mahr and then marry her. The second type was that a man would say to his wife after she had become clean from her period. "Send for so-and-so and have sexual intercourse with him." Her husband would then keep away from her and would never sleep with her till she got pregnant from the other man with whom she was sleeping. When her pregnancy became evident, he husband would sleep with her if he wished. Her husband did so (i.e. let his wife sleep with some other man) so that he might have a child of noble breed. Such marriage was called as Al-Istibda'. Another type of marriage was that a group of less than ten men would assemble and enter upon a woman, and all of them would have sexual relation with her. If she became pregnant and delivered a child and some days had passed after delivery, she would sent for all of them and none of them would refuse to come, and when they all gathered before her, she would say to them, "You (all) know waht you have done, and now I have given birth to a child. So, it is your child so-and-so!" naming whoever she liked, and her child would follow him and he could not refuse to take him. The fourth type of marriage was that many people would enter upon a lady and she would never refuse anyone who came to her. Those were the prostitutes who used to fix flags at their doors as sign, and he who would wished, could have sexual intercourse with them. If anyone of them got pregnant and delivered a child, then all those men would be gathered for her and they would call the Qa'if (persons skilled in recognizing the likeness of a child to his father) to them and would let the child follow the man (whom they recognized as his father) and she would let him adhere to him and be called his son. The man would not refuse all that. But when Muhammad (ﷺ) was sent with the Truth, he abolished all the types of marriages observed in pre-Islamic period of Ignorance except the type of marriage the people recognize today.

The brother keeps talking of civilisation of the arabs, but provides no examples. The arabs of the time of the Prophet saws were indeed backward, especially when compared to the vastly superior civilisations of the day... No calendar, rudimentary script, no centralised govt or coinage, lack of artistic production, etc... I actually dont mind the argument he was making, but he needs to flush out his ideas better. You cant say the scholars exxagerated and not actually have proof of this so called civilisation. Sure the meccans were city dwellers, they had wealth, and normal human mannerisms and culture. But thats different to having an advanced 'civilisation'. The arabs did NOT become a civilisational force until the advent of islam and the establishment of the ummayads/abbasid caliphate. Even the quran indicates this in reference to PREVIOUS arab civilisations like ad and thamud (see rum, 9). Allah swt himself says the arabs of the time were not even comparable civilisationally to their own ancestors. This is not an attack. I would love to discuss and engage more. Thanks fkr the video

It's very interesting how he deals with Abraha and the himyarites, with out east africa there is no Zabur miniscule script that produces the arabic script, with out East Africa you don't have the maad arab tribes brought to law and order from killing each other to extinction by the Axumite controlled himyarite kingdom, the quran foreign vocabulary is another indicator if it wasn't for East African influence all you have is aramaic, you don't find arabic anywhere till after 300ad the himyarites are documented as Ethiopian speaking a language that has nothing to do with arabic , the nabeteans who have no arab decendants were aramaic speakers and ruled the death penalty on anyone opposing the bedouin lifestyle (building, writing, farming) credited as the engineers of petra with all contradicting evidence glossing over the mineans andnthe incense trade route, twisting and fake history fake lineages ect. to give arabs some type of historical medal is one of a kind ,no wonder we never hear about the Najahid dynasty century and a half of history

Islam is the bearer of civilization. Before prophet mohammed was just a fragment a ruin of the Moses civilization(before was egypt phroa). Therefore today is the return of jahiliya brought by the new superpowers after the demise of prophet mohamad alaihisam. It is not that you define jahilya by saying it is not because of rome civilization before.. Civilization thatbis absent of maarifatullah is jahiliya .

I wonder how knowing this pre islamic history of the arabian peninsula help your islam? It is interesting stuff fair enough, but taking every opportunity to have a go at so called islamic/seerah scholars is pretty silly to me. I say just do your thing and people will respect you for your effort, don't step on others to elevate yourself. This brothers example of the battle of badr, where the prophet pbuh didn't camp around the wells and a companion proposed he should therefore he did. Why is it so hard to believe that Rasoolullah pbuh wasn't well versed in war? And he was a man who did make decisions on his own sometimes which were independant of wahi from Allah. There are many instances recorded in hadith literature. Doesn't mean that he wasn't the greatest man, the most charesmatic person to ever set foot on this earth. He will have the largest following on the day of judgement.

It's very important because it has a massive impact on understanding aqeedah (what exactly was the shirk that pre-Islamic Arabs were doing that was so condemned in the Quran, etc.) and understanding the context that the Quran was revealed in. This stuff was known to the Sahabah because they lived it but we live in a completely different world from them. Plus almost all of our traditional means of analyzing the authenticity of hadiths are just attempts at trying to filter hearsay (so you look at a narrator and try to determine whether he is honest and accurate or not, etc). Whereas having modern tools like actual archeology will help as an added filter in terms of seeing which hadiths are authentic or not.

I disagree that your own jahiliyah should be elevated that much. Knowing your roots absolutely but we need to base our identity on la ilaha ilallah.

It's about knowing your roots and not erasing your own heritage. The early Muslims maintained their culture and identity, only modifying that which was in direct contravention to Islam.

@@Historyun And to preserve their knowledge, Abdullah bin Abbas used pre-Islamic poetry to understand the Qur’an for some meanings that he did not understand. Khalid bin Al-Walid and his military commanders used the Arabs’ knowledge of astronomy to determine the meeting places of the Muslim Arab armies in their clash with the Persians and Romans with great accuracy.
