One of the philosophies of the Lions team is "no block, no rock" - as in, if you don't block you're not gonna get the ball given to you. It shows in how well they block.

Great mentality to have, and as you said, it is visible in the team's play.

Coach said in today's press conference that LaPorta was blocking better than he has all summer in the game. It sounds like we all saw the same thing, a big stage that was not too big for the Lions top 4 draft picks. Gibbs definitely looks electric, LaPorta made some key plays, Campbell made some defensive plays, and Branch made the defensive play of the game. Brad Holmes is The Draftburglar.

💯 and it’s not just the talent he acquires-it’s the mentality. Almost all of these players gel with one another immediately. None of them take plays off or lie down. Great thing being built.
@jeremyzier8706

@@coreyfromappalachia 1 thing I love that keeps coming up in interviews with Holmes and Campbell this year is that they look for that mentality 1st, and then physical traits 2nd. I call it the Holmes/Campbell Grit Rating. I figure it's Total Plays Played to Whistle + Bonus Grit Points (can be anything from playing in inclement weather, as an underdog, with an injury, away game, undersized vs opponent, etc.) divided by Total Plays Played. But if you can figure it out, you can crack the Lions code.🤔

@@jeremyzier8706 totally agree man. I was blessed to have a repeated high school basketball coach of the year as a dad. Grew up in a gym and spent my father/son trips at coaching clinics listening to all the greatest college coaches speak about team building. My dad didn’t get to recruit (public high school of course). His teams were families. They were never the most talented. But they gelled and had an identity. The culture he built I’m so proud of. At his 60th birthday there were generations of his players that flew in to surprise him. As a lifelong lions fan, I feel so blessed that our coach is the closest I’ve ever seen to what I grew up witnessing. Campbell is the real deal and I’ve been saying it since I saw them never lay down his first season with an exceptionally limited roster. Absolutely beautiful and the reason I love sports.

2 things I noticed since I didn't watch any preseason games Gibbs is that type of dude where when he gets the ball the defense holds their breath, he is exploooosive. I bet by the end of the year the only player more explosive will be Tyreek Hill. LaPorta is a super athlete and moved great. I know I'm a fan and biased but he moves better than Hockenson already. One more thing, Jack Campbell is also a super athlete, I saw him chasing down a receiver and I was like "damn who's that slow ass taking forever to get down there" then I saw it was an linebacker and not a DB and was blown away by his speed lol

How about a jamo post with a Gibbs wheel route to the same side, good luck. It's gonna be crazy when they're both out there together. The running lanes are gonna be wild once jamo is back too because you always have to keep both safeties back. This team is gonna be special

La Porta and Gibbs were amazing rookies for the first game of the season. Can't to see how these 3 Draft classes keep progressing. Looks like solid starters, a few great players, and might have an elite all-pro in Hutch.

The Laporta play that I remember strongly was a reception where he went airborne after the catch to get the first down. He knew he wouldn't get it if he didn't, but he put his body on the line. did it anyways, and got it. Loved it.

Excellent analysis. It is hard to appreciate what is happening with the blocking without repeated views. I really enjoy how you show what the blocking assignments appear to be, and what is being done to make the play successful or not. As you have mentioned a few times, this is just the first game for these two guys, and they will continue to get better as the season goes on. That goes double for the defence, which has been completely overhauled from last year. They played very well Thursday, but that unit is going to be real difficult for opposing offences to move on, and keep the ball from, as the season progresses.

Hell yeah dude great content as always! Really enjoy the stuff you’ve been putting out. As a lions fan, it’s really cool to see 🦁🥹. Really like what they’re doing with LaPorta in particular because he’s such an all around talent blocking, receiving. Thought that he displayed incredible ball skills as well (soft hands!) Gibbs on the other hand is pure lightning. Love the physicality he runs with, I feel like he will be best running flats, rail shots, hot routes, etc. Picture this….Amon-Ra, LaPorta, Gibbs, Jameson Williams, Monty all in the same personnel package 😗👀. Going to be fun to watch Ben Johnson dial it up !! #onepride

Unheralded Honorable Mention: I'll get some flak for this, but I want to point out that Josh Reynolds had more yds from scrimmage than any other player, both teams. He was a mid-season waiver pick up in 2021. He's never the star, but when we're thin as we were in KC, he answers the call of Ben/Dan/Brad/Sheila. He is indicative of an important point, the roster is almost finished. We have a roster of (mostly) Dan/Brad style Lions. Not NFLPA guys who want to max their pay in the league, but Lions. There IS a difference.

Good call on Reynolds. It's helpful to replay that Chiefs-Rams game from a few years ago, when he and Goff were just killing Kansas City. For a possession receiver, Reynolds turns up on a lot of big chunk plays.

Awesome breakdown of these two rookies. As a hopeless lifelong Lions fan, I will admit that I was one of the many who questioned Brad Holmes picking Gibbs at #12 and LaPorta as their first 2nd round pick, but I will never doubt Holmes' ability to properly evaluate talent and fit. I'm excited to see these two players going forward. I believe they will have very solid seasons as rookies this year. Go Lions!

I can help you with a couple of things. At least in an abstract way. Spags said prior to the game that it was all eyes on 26 when he was in the game. Also, don’t discount Hank Fraley in terms of blocking. Oline coach.

Brad Holmes has had 3 draft classes. 23 players have been drafted in those 3 drafts. 20 are on the 53 man roster, 1 is on the NFI list, the other 2 are on the practice squad. All 23 are part of the Lions. I said before this years draft that the Lions needed one more good draft class to make them over into a good team. Boy howdy... they got more than a good one, this may be the best class of the 3 and that says a lot looking at the other two draft classes.

I remember when all the experts said Adofo-Mensah got the better of Holmes in the Hockenson trade then our backup TEs score way more TDs than Hock they have to make Hock the highest paid TE in the NFL and we draft a cheap TE that looks better than Hockenson!?! (At least better at blocking and RAC) #HolmesIsAWitch

Hock and LaPorta are going to be compared alot. As a lions fan I have to say this. Hock is good, but he was not a willing blocker, especially at the second level. Go and put on the tape from last season first half. If you look down field at amon ra, if he doesnt get the ball hes looking to work. Hes getting a block or at least trying. On the same play hock will be casually walking around. A few times I truly believe if hock was blocking lions score a td. Now Hock is a good receiver so it seems like the vikings are ok with that. But For the lions, blocking at the second level is important for all positions. LaPorta showed today hes not only a willing blocker, but he low key looks excited to block. Hes a lot like amon in that sense. Dude loves being physical and doing the dirty work. And as receiver I thought he looked great, especially for his first game.

Upvote for the ARSB love. I cannot get over how tough and effective a blocker he is. He was PFF’s highest rated WR blocker among starters, and it wasn’t close. He is very unique among WRs.
