I've talked to so many black women who fondly reall Scary Spice being one of their first natural hair representations when they were children. I still wear bantu knots because of her
@DavidKen8782 жыл бұрын
As a woman, can you explain why you guys always talk about needing to see a represention of yourselves through celebrities? I don't mean to be rude, I'm just curious why. Literally everytime I see someone say it, it's either a Black woman saying it about childhood or an overweight White woman talking about now. But it confuses me because I never see men say that or understood why anyone would feel that way. As a black male, I saw plenty of other Black men on TV. Even if I didn't, I knew what channels and shows to go to to see them. But again, I never felt like I needed anyone to represent me. So I wasn't actually looking. Reading your comment, I just want to get insight from you. Did you feel you needed someone to be/look like? But also did that person have to be cool/really famous because there's no way Scary Spice, a woman from Britain, was the first person with natural hair anyone could've seen.

@@DavidKen878 While I’m not an AA Woman, nor an overweight Caucasian woman, but I’m Latina and I always wondered up until I was maybe 14 or so why didn’t the actresses that I saw most often look anything like me. I don’t think women NEED to have representation via celebrities but think about how impressionable young people are and if they only see Caucasian women in movies, tv, or whatever it may be they might be like why isn’t there someone that looks like me, whether it be skin color, body shape, hair type, physical anomaly, whatever.. For example if someone was trying to sell hair products that are made for AA Women and their specific hair type, I don’t think having a Caucasian woman trying to promote it would make much sense. Or an AA or Latina woman trying to sell the Caucasian woman a certain shade of makeup, the Caucasian lady would most likely wanna see it on someone that matched her shade range so she could see how it would look on her.. just my thoughts 💭
@DavidKen8782 жыл бұрын
@@amber_meza Did you really think that as a kid or is that something you believe you felt looking back? I hear child all the time talk about how unpretty they think they are. But never have a heard a child wonder why they aren't seeing MORE people who look like them on TV. That's usually something only an adult would say to point out discrimination. It's more logical for a child to point out the lack of people who look like them then to point out how there isn't enough.
@amber_meza2 жыл бұрын
@@DavidKen878 I think for me I felt that way because where I grew up it was all white people. Until I was in high school there were only 3 of us that weren’t white.. even in our graduating class there were 4. I’d assume it would be the same for a person in a wheelchair or something along those lines.. it’s not necessary to have the representation but I’m sure it’s nice to see

In one image, two-year-old Princess Eugenie watched on the action. At that point, it was arguably one of the Royal family's biggest ever scandal. There is sooo many more cameos that are familiar to UK audiences! You've got Jonathon Ross on stage interviewing them (huge TV host in UK), Jools Holland, asking them about some date (Original member of the Squeeze turned massive music TV host), Jennifer Saunders (Comedic Actor and voice of the fairy godmother in Shrek 2, Michael Barrymore as the drill sargeant (TV presentor was in a big big scandle), Richard Briers as the pope! (The original Bob the Builder!) Stephen Fry! Writer, actor, comedian and the one of the most treasured people in the UK... And, honestly I'm quite shocked he wasn't mentioned... The legend himself Richard O' Brian, as the creepy photographer, not only wrote and directed one of the biggest, campest, musicals of all time, Rocky Horror Picture Show, also played Riff Raff in the movie adaptation and created one of THE best interactive team games on TV - Crystal Maze. Sorry if I've missed anyone! Shout out to all the UKers!

The Fergie they mention is, Sarah Ferguson. She was married to Prince Andrew (yeah, THAT guy) but divorced him in the 90s. She was later photographed having her toes sucked while on holiday on a beach by her new lover. Very scandalous and was all over the English tabloids at the time. I think they're just playing on that because it happened before '97.

Grant as anyone other than The Spice Girls' manager.

Same for me. I think my family might know him as Clifford still specifically because I only know him as Clifford and call him Clifford whenever I see him in things. I had an issue when I was watching something with my fiance and my fiance saw him but couldn't think of where he was from, and I said "Oh, that's Clifford." "Clifford who?" "I don't know. Clifford." I think American or non-English/Australian audiences are going to miss the significance of a lot of these cameos, e.g. Stephen Fry as the judge, Richard O'Brien as the photographer, Hugh Laurie as the Poirot-like detective and Barry Humphries as the sort of Rupert Murdoch-esque tabloid boss. Also, Fergie in this contex is the Duchess of York - Prince Andrew's ex.

It made them so unique in that way because they pushed the norms that were put upon them and despite the challenges they came with they succeeded in the end.
