A lot of climbers complain about tall people having an unfair advantage, but this is a good example of perfect "short climbing" - she keeps a perfect center of gravity while keeping her feet and hands close together. Not just perfect technique, but great hip flexibility to stay under her hands, and use of sit-backs, drop knees, heel hooks where others would use more dynamic (and risky) moves.

I've been watching Jain Kim now almost every day for more than a month. It has made me a way better technical climber! Her movements just adapts naturally for me on the wall. I honestly don't get how she does that. Her technique is really fluid. It's beautiful. I've been climbing for a year now and I don't get how she can manage the strength in her hands.. Very often she just seems to be walking directly on the wall with barely any foothold but somehow all of this seems completely effortless. I tried to emulate that a few times and my hands got pumped within 10 seconds. Probably did it wrong and looked like crap doing it too :P

I'm going to make a separate video with some breakdown and comparison to other climbers. I just need to find some free time :)
@tling69908 жыл бұрын
Would love to see the breakdown. A few things I noticed: She has amazing balance, she never barndoors in the slightest and does basically every move in a controlled static motion. You can't do those slow moves if your positioning will throw you too much in a bad direction. hyau23 it'd be cool to hear how you've come since starting climbing. I'm no pro, just a hobbyist who's climbed in gyms for over 6 years. The regular gym rats spank me any day
@hyau238 жыл бұрын
Tony Ling I'm the same as you, i only go twice a week with friends. When i first started i could only do V3s (with terrible technique might i add...actually still with terrible technique) but currently im able to do up to V6, and 7s if theyre easy. My finger strength has come a long way and im able to do crimps and pinches with ease. Getting a lot of hints and tips from the regular climbers helps especially with heel/toe hooks and learning how and when to flag. I still barn door occasionally though haha. Maybe i should go to a climbing seminar
@tling69908 жыл бұрын
That's amazing man! It took me a good while longer to get to 6's and 7's and I started on 3's also. I would say once I reached 5's and 6's my progress slowed down a lot because I needed to strength train. anything below I felt like I had good balance to be able to adapt to many types of moves but I wasn't serious enough about my strength training to really go far. Now I'm 5'6 and 125lbs so I'm pretty advantaged compared to most guys. Sure tall people can reach higher but when the route gets tricky you need to be able to stick the holds and keep you weight to the wall. Having long limbs and a heavy torso at the end of those means the tall person physically does not have as much flexibility as I do when it comes to finding a position. The climbing community is great isn't it? :) I've rarely met someone that isn't willing to help, keep it up. I would say if you are just learning your hooks and flags that you pay extra attention to how people balance for example in this video at 1:00 she has both hands up and a foothold at waist height. It seems straighforward to go right foot up and push to the next handhold. But what that would do is force your hip away from the wall in order for your right hand to be anchor and reach with the left. You'd also be right hand right foot anchor with left foot flag, two hinges makes a door. So instead she goes left foot up, right foot flag in order to lean her weight perpendicular to her grip. Then she simply steps up with her left leg and little bit of right arm. Play 1:00-1:04 in slow motion, she could have frozen mid move almost any point without trouble. I always tell new climbers to focus on balance and endurance, strength comes naturally through the activity
