The OpenGoal team have put all of the hd remasters to shame, they should be incredibly proud of the result of their hard work. It was so fun to go through this game again in such a smooth way I finished it all in the evening I got it installed

Blame bean counters ( stock holders ) for that behavior as well. In fact don't even respect publicly traded companies as they are serving stock holders, not customers half of the time. What F*'s over the customer doesn't matter. Look at CELSY's recent behavior and Clip Studio Paint out-cry.

I'd also say that the guys at OpenGoal have another advantage over mass media in the sense that they don't have to worry about porting this game to the cell processor, only pc hardware so it's a bit easier for them to optimize this game to the best of their ability. It's probably why things like punch glitch don't exist in the pc port and the green star is visible(unlike the PS3 version).

This OpenGOAL port includes QoL improvements such as inverted camera control settings and subtitles, which were lacking in the original version, and can rightly be called the definitive version of Jak1. And most importantly, it is wonderful to be able to play it on a PC without even extracting the BIOS from the actual PS2 console.

Incredible work by the OpenGOAL team. On PC can you force higher LODs and stuff to improve image quality of distant objects? Also, it'd be interesting to see if the OpenGOAL wizards could back-port to Jak 1 the higher quality models used in Jak II cutscenes, if that makes sense. Any word on if that's possible?

OpenGOAL using highest LODs by default. If they make character importing possible in Jak 1 then we may have a chance swapping to higher quality models. But I think, they have different bones for some parts, so that can be tricky to solve and make animations work with them.

This comparison is actually incredibly ridiculous, and a giant disservice to the entire purpose of OpenGOAL with how you've tried to display the visual fidelity between PS2, PS3, and OpenGOAL. If you're going to make a comparison, don't rig it in favor of the newest thing. There are so many speedrunners for Jak and Daxter that stream it from a PS2 alone, and while the visual fidelity of their games aren't as good as OpenGOAL. They are nowhere near as bad as what you've made it out to be for this.

PS4 and PS5 versions are emulated, it's like the PS2 version running in high resolution. It's not well made and full of slowdowns... OpenGOAL is the superior way to play the Jak games

No, it does run that bad. There are two versions of the game, one that runs at 480i and another one that runs at 560i, both look this bad, it didn't look that bad back then with little screens, but if you plug your PS2 to a bigger than 15" TV, the game will look awful.

I play them in the OpenGOAL launcher in 32:9 Ultrawide 120Hz format with an HD texture pack created by an OpenGOAL guy. Game from my adolescence, I enjoy it like never before.

You should try it (if you have a PC). I downloaded it and reshade today and got the game looking phenomenal. Made two different setting switch reshade, one to look modernized and the other two simulate an old crt tv

I saw the PS4 Version run on PS5, and wow, the PS5 version looks worse than the PS3 Version, and Sony really let you pay for it... Don't buy these games until Sony deserves it, use OpenGOAL... Jak II and Jak 3 are planned, and on jak II they are already working.

Yep and that's because the PS4 version is basically an emulation of the PS2 version just in higher resolution and with the original textures compared to the PS3 HD Collection where the textures are actually remastered. It is full of slowdowns and it is really a big scam buying the PS4 version. Something i've been thinking about is why they didn't just use the PS3 HD Collection for the PS4/PS5 release. Sony should be ashamed of releasing this in such a state with all the slowdowns and that it is just an emulation as well

Awsome work! A question: my PS3 version of Jak and Daxter (from the HD Trilogy) shows very noticible and distracting motion blur when turning the camera. This happens regardless of cable, resolution or display. Is it just me?

Yes, analog TV-s using the NTSC and PAL systems. The PS2 is designed for these interlaced low resolutions.

I care deeply about preservation and legacy, so what gaslighting do I have to worry about with OPENGOAL? Lets see, graphical inconsistencies (like the PS3 and PS4 versions have compared not only to themselves but also PS2) and stuff like PS4's limited directional control, PS3's punch bug, and hell may'be even say the few glitched Precursor Orbs like that one in Jak II's sewers. While I'd love to know about all these specific examples I named, I brought them up to be about the whole topic they're apart of. Ill accept brief answers as well. In the end, I want to know how faithful this is to the PS2 original and if it does a better job than the PS3 and PS4 versions combined (since on their own I can assume OpenG beats them separately).

OpenGOAL beats the ports in every single way. This version is the most faithful to the original PS2 release. It's a great experience with a capable PC and a PS4 controller connected to it. You don't really need a crazy strong computer because it's very well optimized. I think a gtx 1030 or 1050 is more than enough...

And lets say the DS4 works well, does it work better, equal, or worse than the DS3 (assuming that's useable)? DS3 is closer to DS2, so off that I'd assume it's better than DS4. Directional movement and aspect ratio are some of my big ones, so that's why I ask. (I have a GTX 1050. But I don't truly game on PC. It's best to treat me as if I have no experience using emulators and such on PC. I do want to play on OpenGOAL though.)

I noticed that the ps2 version looks blurry especially with objects that are far away. The ps3 version is basically an upgraded ps2 version looks a bit cleaner and less blurry. Than open goal has a wider view with true 16 by 9 and cleaner visuals overall.

@@KnucklesWTD It's the problem with how 4k TVs upscale 720p signal. I'd say it's more a problem with picture clarity rather than jagginess. Maybe the upcoming Retrotink 4k could do something about that. 720p in 3x scale would fill an entire 4k screen.

It COULD look this bad if you, like, played it on a big-ass 4k TV. But, under normal circumstances, it definitely looked much more presentable. Back in the day, people would play it on CRT TVs which would hide the imperfections. And nowadays there's options like Retrotink 5x that can de-interlace 480i signal. Check out this comparison of various de-interlacers: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fKepq5akbbN2mJY The one on the far right is basically as good as an actual PS2 can look. Either that or a Sony PVM which was the highest-quality CRT monitor from the 90s.

The OpenGOAL one honestly doesn't look too far off of a remake considering the color boost and added visual clarity. It's by far the most comfortable way to play the game, I'll probably never go back to ps2/3. I can't wait for jak 2, hopefully they decompile it soon I'd play it over and over. The OpenGOAL guys really shit on Mass Media and Naughty Dog with this port lol. Hopefully it spurs some kind of reboot or sequel, though I doubt it will. My mind is blown by the fact that I can just play this shit on PC without having to haul out and dust off a 20 year old console, this sets a really cool precedent for other ps2 series' ports on PC I think.
