A few comments have brought this really amazing project to my attention: opengoal.dev/ OpenGOAL is a fan-made native port of the Jak Trilogy which means you can run the games on any platform without emulation! Definitely check it out if you are looking to replay these games.

I've been playing Jak & Daxter and Jak 2 on Opengoal, and they run quite well. Much better than Ps4 or Ps5 for sure.

OpenGOAL is the BEST way to play them. I just finished Jak 1 and 2! Jak 3 is not ready yet btw, but they r working on it.

The Open Goal fan versions of the Jak series is the best version of all the main line Jak games. They all run perfectly and you can even play them on the steam deck.

Something you and everyone else needs to know is that on the new PS4/PS5 version, if you activate debug mode, your trophies will be disabled and deleting ur in-game save wont work, to be able to get trophies again, you have to go to ur console storage and delete ur save data of the game from there and start from the beginning

Open Goal is probably the best, what I didn't like about the PS3 version is that they used the cropped widescreen from the PS2 version

The save states are actually a very welcome change, as someone who played jak and daxter games on ps2 ps3 and ps4 already, those games sometimes had very frustrating checkpoints, that will be a very welcome adition for the newer audience who are not very into the hardcore 3D platformers of the ps2 era.

Yep I'm also glad Sony gave us the option to rewind games. At this point in my life, a mistake could only cost me 2 minutes and I'll still rewind

Not anymore, no. The OpenGoal versions (decompiled and ported to PC) are the definitive versions nowadays (although Jak 3 might still have a few issues for another few months

With the debug cheat you just have to press r2 after you die and youre back. You can also fly around.

The game uses 60Hz by default on the Classics version. The PAL versions of the Jak games all offer a 60Hz mode in the main menus but Sony got rid of this option for the Classics and made it 60 automatically.

I’m guessing the reason why they’re rendering the games at 480i is because typically when you upscale games from the PS2 era to 1080p or 4K the hud ends up looking extremely blurry as a result. I feel rendering them at native resolution is the best option because unless they redraw the hud, running them at 4K will be jarring due to the blurry hud.

I bought the PS4 bundle with the 4 games in the series, so I will have 4 new PS4 versions of Jak and Daxter, Jak 2, Jak 3, and Jak X when these 3 games come out for PS5, and then it would be 8 platinums counting the old PS4 versions.

I already got the game back in 2017 so it's just the i wished there was a lot more ps1, ps2 and ps3 games on ps4/ps5 instead of leaving them trapped.

None of the PS2 Classics run at 480i. The lack of deinterlacing artifacts prove they're running at a progressive resolution, not interlaced. The reason they look so soft is because Sony uses a billinear filter to help with aliasing which blurs the entire image. You can see Tomb Raider Legend is running well above 480i in IGN's video

I'm playing this new version on my PS4 and the frame rate is not a consistent 60fps. It constantly drops. I hope Sony takes their legacy content more seriously on the PS6

Great video. I always thought they were upscaling the 480i image to 480p and outputting it at 1080p-4k, as it looked similar to my PS2 when connected to the Tink2x, which converts the 480i image to 480p, and then my M Classic which scales that up to 1080p.

Even considering the PS3 remasters in terms of color look better than on PS5, i hope we get the Ratchet and clank series port in 2025 at least the first trilogy or 4 games. Having a PS5 and having the need to switch the PS3 or the PS2 to play old games that even got a remaster its a bit ridiculous...

I'm more so excited that they're updating these emulations that were already on PS4 because the PS4 ones were notoriously not great in terms of technical issues/emulation inaccuracies and were substantially worse when played on PS5 (Ape Escape 2 for instance is pretty much unplayable on PS5 currently)

The PS4 / PS5 versions are not 480i. The original PS4 emulated version ran at 896p so the new versions should be the same or higher

It runs smooth, it’s accessible….why do you all nitpick so much? I played through these games on the PS2 back in the day, replayed on the PS3, then I replayed on the PS4. I’m sure I’ll eventually replay them on the PS5. I thought it was enjoyable on every platform.

The PS5 version is the best official version of the game, and that's one reason why I'm glad it was re-released YET AGAIN. The PS3 remasters have been grossly overrated since their launch, and this has been gradually picked up by fans overtime. The PS3 versions have a host of new issues that weren't in the original game (and emulations), with some of the most notable ones being the infamous punch glitch and input delay. The main reason why Jak was probably re-released, which objectively speaking is welcomed because there are some improvements here (even though not covered in this video), is because this is the 20th anniversary of his final game in the trilogy. There's also a Jak and Daxter movie in the works, so probably some connection there too. And Sony seem to be using the popularity of these older Jak games to gain more mileage out of Naughty Dog's new recently announced IP - "from the creators of... Jak and Daxter", lmao. Anyways, can someone please also do a Daxter (PSP vs PS4 vs PS5) comparison though?! And The Lost Frontier? Everyone mostly does the same format of videos with video games and don't cover the unique angles that are missed in them.

I always wondered why the PS3 versions happen to look the best. Looking at God Of War 1&2 and the PSP games, as well as the first 3 Sly games. They look much better on PS3 than the PS5. It's crazy. And? Honestly unacceptable from a multibillion dollar company.

I know especially for Jak games, the code that they have already make emulating them somewhat more difficult but even then that doesn’t excuse the issues the original emulated ones had, though a native version that is close to the original experience will be better than emulating.

Also I recently platinumed the new versions and for some reason the ps4 v2 had a few fps issues (mostly on the zoomer and i was playing it on ps5) but on the ps5 version they were not. Don’t remember having any fps issues playing v1 on ps5

The new jak and daxter port runs on an new emulator the ps4 emulator of the old ports was cracked I can see big difference. Pcsx2 is the beat solution but I don't have strong pc so th new ps5 version is the best for me. Ps3 remaster is good

if u think "it just doesn't look very good" then it just shows that the ps2 version is just dated. It's the ps2 version, there's only SO MUCH they can do to it. The better the graphics, the more flaws you'll notice because they didn't even care about all this bs back then especially when playing on CRT televisions. all the rough edges and whatnot don't matter. We are extremely spoiled FOR NO REASON AT ALL 😂😂😂

I think PS4 looked worse than even PS2 in some areas, for what i remember it had shader glitches such as in the water, or slowdowns mainly Jak 2 and 3. Also the LOD system was very masked on a CRT. The game aged better graphically than most early 2000 games.
