Probably because he didn't want to ruin his voice with adding an unpracticed gravely tone so he stopped adding in distortion to his voice to make sure it stayed powerful into his later years. That's my take on it coz I've also thought about this too

One, what The Meltdownz said, he wanted to lay off the harshness to preserve his voice. Two, I think he found he could sing higher than he originally thought and pursued that. Three, around '81/'82, he was headed in a pop direction anyway, and wanted to get his smooth voice practiced.
