Neal is aware of the stains on his ear. He learned a valuable lesson about dealing with a bike chain shortly before a podcast. Shout-out to Rudy Giuliani.

I'm way too busy fixating on the one extra long or shiny white beard hair on Jake's cheek, or the patch of Neal's beard just below his ear that he seems to have missed when trimming, to notice. However, these are ultimately just opportunities for me to examine my own toxic perfectionist tendencies. Such is Neal's genius. It is blocks all the way down.

Man that grease gets everywhere, but you don't have to hug your bike to fix it. I had this happen on a bike ride with my like 7-year-old son. His chain fell off. There was some bolt thing that was loose that I couldn't tighten and we were like 2 mi away from home. I got it to stay in the right position with a stick, But the first stick broke and we were in such a nice neighborhood with such well manicured lawns. I couldn't find a f****** stick on the ground. Finally found one and my son rode home the whole way with a stick sticking out of his bike. And his mom covered in grease.

Neal not knowing how a bike chain works, he tried to hear what was wrong. Must have got your ear too close. Now that the attention is on your ears, you got some satellites Neal. I never once looked at your ears till now. I been listening since ep 1 too.

One of my favorite things about this podcast has been watching Neal go from, "I'll never be a parent," to taking an active and proactive role in his partner's child's life.

The problem with the "I hate you, I want to beat you" approach is that if you become skilled enough to win prizes, excel in your field, and reach when you end of your career, you may realize you did it for the wrong reasons. You based your whole existence on proving someone wrong instead of pursuing what you love and simply enjoying it. So, yeah, our generation got messed up in the head. Great conversation, though.

I have always enjoyed Jake Johnson interviews. This one is beyond great. Loved hearing far more detail about Jake's school years, the reality of dropping out. Fascinating to hear about the the drive of winning from both of them. Made me think a lot about where I derive my fire. And lately it has been a damp match. So this episode hit me at the perfect time. I grew up with addict parents, in the Midwest, full belly and roof over head... but very few resources. Always, always thankful that I learned to be resourceful. That resourcefulness was needed and valued. Jake recognizing that his kids need to have challenging experiences is everything. That he and his wife realized that they were giving their kids too much stuff is so smart. This episode is so packed with good stuff about drive and motivation. Ready to watch it again. Thanks Neal and Jake! Really appreciate you and this.

Jake's depersonalization sounds a lot like disassociation which is a trauma response. Your body creates reactions to stop feeling negative emotions. Disassociation is just one of them and it's difficult to ground yourself back in your body. Good luck Jake.

27:27 this IS so tricky. My brother can't read, spell, write from the time he was in school, to now at 37yo. He completely sells himself short in life because of the way his educational needs shaped his personal development and ability to get employment. There's such a huge difference if a child needs extra help/attention/guidance/skilled tutoring. I've worked in higher education. You can absolutely see a child who had parents like "Uncle Eddy" versus supportive reinforcing parents.

Do not try better help. It’s predatory and is wildly unethical. Find a therapist literally any other way. Find a different sponsor you have too many viewers to promote therapy that isn’t actually helpful. Especially because a lot people look at this as a kind of therapeutic podcast.
