Great video, I was a commercial fisherman for 15 years in Nova Scotia Canada, fish dragging on browns bank and George's banks, also Heron saning, silver hack, shrimp and lobster fishing. We fished out of West pubnico Nova Scotia. I really love seeing different fishers, and how they do it.

I just scored a deckhand job on the Misty Blue. A little more cramped than I would have imagined! I put my name in the hat on a facebook forum and I luckily was the first one to actually come out and show up when I said I was going to. Excited, but nervous. Headed to Kodiak Alaska around the 26th. Peter Pan cannery job. 15k for 60 days plus depending on how well we do we'll get an incentive. Our boat is not anywhere as modern as yours! We have the same washer dryer setup though! Cheers!

Im stuck working on a factory trawler, also just got off a long liner for cod. One just like the beauty bay that the boat is docked behind in this video. 7 seasons in a row so far, 8th season coming up this A season. I got a spot on the best factory trawler though that pays really welll and has the best workers. I would still rather be on your boat though. Stay safe this A season bro.

as someone who fished in every kind of boat you can up there you should move to a H&G boat they make way more cash then just scooping up fishing and selling it super cheap to a factory to process don't waste your youth on crap money with you already being a deck hand you can move to any other boat into a nice highly paid position no waiting around for raises up to deck

Also who in their right mind would go from a gig paying metric fuck loads of money already, not really having to do THAT much physical labor (in comparison), with his own room and shit where he’s second in command to a job where he’s one of like 100 other dudes all trying to become one of the top 10 dudes and 110% do manual labor 16-20 hours a day. Not trying to speak for him but holy shit man I’m not even remotely a fisherman and even I can see that’s a shit move.

Realistically you'd have to get a job as a processor on a catcher/processor (which fucking sucks, 16 hour shifts, down below decks all day) and if you do really well at that talk to the forman and the deck boss and maybe they'll try you out as a deckhand (youll probably still have to process but at least you get to go outside) Then after you know what you're doing there and have made some freinds in the industry you might be able to get a job on a catcher boat like this. These smaller boats don't really post job openings, you kind of just have to know someone and wait for the opportunity.

@jakobolavjensen
@jakobolavjensen Жыл бұрын
Good questions! It’s not easy to maintain relationships we definitely all get frustrated with each other at certain points. We all get along pretty good though. We are there together and have the goal of getting the season over with so staying positive really helps and makes a big difference. As far as our relationships with our spouses we just have to text and call as much as we can. Being away from relationships at home is definitely the hardest part about the job. It’s two seasons though so we are gone 3 months at a time so it is a long time but atleast we don’t have to go the entire 6 months in a stretch.

@benosick8542
@benosick8542 Жыл бұрын
A lot of the pollock catcher boats like this don't actually have observers anymore. They have cameras that monitor for all the regulatory stuff and we do our data collection at the processing plants instead now. It looks like that's the settup they have here. Everyone I've talked to prefers it this way, when I observed on small boats like this I was just underfoot all the time and it's easier to collect data during the offload anyways.
