Even without the "epic performance" this was easily my favorite song of Eurovision 2016. The melody and chord progression in the chorus are absolutely gorgeous and inspired; I get goosebumps, it's so beautiful. To have the special effects on stage like that was simply icing on the cake. It's interesting that tastes can differ so much. I find France's and Bulgaria's entries to be rather bland and forgettable in comparison! Poli Genova also represented Bulgaria in 2011 with a song that did not qualify but which is so *much* better than her 2016 entry. The 2011 song is in Bulgarian and one of my absolute favorite non-qualifiers.

I've been a fan of him since this eurovision and always wonder where does he get those extra ideas :D overlooking the fact that he's charming, lot's of people probably voted for him for this reason, but the song is catchy. for me, eurovision is an event to brighten up my mood with happy song, that's why Sergey will always be my winner of 2016, he had the staging and the song
@maxx62996 жыл бұрын
How did Sergey walk on the screen?? Very easy and simple! The screen is NOT a flat screen, in fact it's got some grooves where he could put is feet on or stay seated at some point of the performance. Additionally, on TV screen projections gave the illusion of the whole things (rocks, asteroids, tiles...) to start rotating...
@Wattsini915 жыл бұрын
I was gonna say the screen had shelves that move in and out.
@chadpurugganan7616 жыл бұрын
The screen was a bit inclined diagonal. And the white backdrop was a white cloth or fabric that is elastic. There are hidden steps beneath that backdrop. Then when he sat down and he seemed to rotate a bit, that was already visual effect and you could almost see it.
@royalpilot1166 жыл бұрын
I wish the win of the televote brought them higher. The song is truely just a good dance song, nothing special, but the performance should have elevated the placement.
@Powerhh6 жыл бұрын
if i remember correctly, the performance was done by using something like an elastic fabric/sheet/thing that everything was being projected onto, which was stretched over a structure behind that allowed him to grab and step on specific places! you can see how the "wall" kind of is pushed inwards where he places his foot at a few points. the precision in this performance is absolutely insane and i love to see these kinds of creative and unique solutions in eurovision! but also, i can only imagine the amount of times he must've miscalculated where to put his feet and fallen off. your reaction videos are so btw great! i love how you're generally very nice, respectful and chill about all the performances in your reactions, especially compared to a lot of overly aggressive or negative reaction videos. thanks for the fun reaction videos!
@alex_gaimar6 жыл бұрын
They kept everything secret so the only way to grasp how it was done is to watch videos from different angles from the audience. It's a tilted stretchy white sheet with projections on it. One thing I want to say is that the moment when it seems to spin is actually done graphically for the TV audience.

It's basically a projection screen, so just a canvas of sorts, and the whole thing is done with projection mapping, and he has a couple steps on the frame that stick out, and the whole screen is under a slight angle to make the climbing easier. I think he even fell once during his rehearsal. But yeah, it was amazingly executed.
@onewxrldmusic73033 жыл бұрын
You should know this was the public vote winner all over Europe including surporisingly Ukraine. Based only on public voting it would win. But it came at the height of the anti-Russian sentirments during the Ukraine crisis (a political song from Ukraine won the title). Unbelievable but true, twelve country juries gave the song a zero, described as one of the ugliest political voting ever in Eurovision, vote against the country and completely ignore the song and the performance. Wiwiblog experts William and Deban described this as one of the biggest crimes committed on Eurovision that year, the fact 12 countries gave this zero points. The Eurofans did their utmost also so that Russia doesn't win, because the winner would get the right to organize Eurovision the following year. This was a big no no as Ukraine would boycott the event for sure, plus Eurovision organization feared Russia if it won, being an anti-gay country and anti-gay laws would mistreat the main gay audience of Eurovision if they ventured to go to Russia to attend. Many gay organizations said they would boycott Eurovision if Russia won and organized it had Lazarev won that year. Poor Sergey Lazarev, a hugely gay-friendly artist and big following by gays was confronted every move he made to explain himself why he could win for Russia and gays would be still welcome. Journalists haunted him throughout on this matter that year. This is epic. He handled it well and very diplomaticaly saying Russia organized events well and had no objections to gays. But I mean he is an artist. He was deeply hurt by the negative coverage about him but swallowed his pride. He even hid the news hew had become a new father so that his family is protected from all this. You should also check the wonderful video of the song he made, very homoerotic. You should also check the heartful Covid performance of the song as a wonderful duo with Elena Paparizou an earlier Greek Swedish winner and pianist and composer Dimitris Kontopoulos. The eagles that you see reflected on the screen are a symbol that Sergey Lazarev likes and has it tattooed on his arm to give him strength. By the way you can see how gay friendly Sergey Lazarev is and the popularity with gays by just watching the homo-erotic song and video of Lazarev "Take It Off" a worthy visit although it is not Eurovision, but would have been a Eurovision winner definitely if it had been put through by Russia.
@stevenkendall30926 жыл бұрын
Same "Dream Team" did the staging for this one as Moldova this year. It was a box covered with a white canvas on the front which they then projected all the images from the front onto. Looked great! Behind the box they moved in and out squares in sequence with the images giving him a staircase all the way to the top. When he lies back he's cradled on a platform and there's a handle he can grab to position himself. When he jumps to the next level the squares are slid backwards. Sergey actually fell on the 1st run-thru because of new shoes that they then scoffed up so he would have traction with the slippy canvas.
@kennet78376 жыл бұрын
This is the most impressive staging I've ever witnessed in Eurovision. Doesn't hurt that Sergey is also a charismatic performer. Not surprised at all they won the televote. The song itself is just OK, doesn't get too exciting (no pun intended). Vocals are good, but not the most challenging song to sing. The reason I never could get into this is because I felt Russia invested so much into a stunning on-screen performance in order to cover up for how musically average their song was. In my opinion, if you have to rely on "flash" in order to make your song stand out, it's not deserving of a high finish, nevermind winning.
@slavaro19926 жыл бұрын
That's because we don't have any public internal selections anymore (and very seldom had). So our broadcaster just order songs from some popular composer every year. That's why almost all the songs are such a cliche, there's no place for creativity. I can remember only Nalich (the best Russian entry, IMO), Buranovskie Babushki and Bilan who were chosen by televoting.

It wasn't a screen. It was a projection canvas made from a special material that wouldn't rip when he jumped on it. There was a construction behind the canvas where "the steps" he jumped on were. You can even find a footage from a rehearsal where he missed the final step, and fell. It was my favorite song of that year's competition. I still think it should have won. I'm glad he won the televote. (BTW, not only my favorite song of that year's competition, but from the competition so far. The only one I loved even close to how much I love "You Are The Only One" is this year's "Oneiro Mou").

I still don't know how they managed the stage effects... and I don't want to know :P You should review year-by-year, all the songs. By this time next year (at 2 or 3 vids a day) you'll have watched them all ;)

What is sad, is that they never revealed the behind the scenes, so we all don't know how it's done.

My guess is that the screen is slightly a stretchy material and some small platforms stuck out at certain points and were pulled back as soon as he was no longer standing on them.

I was actually sitting above the stage during the final. The "screen" is, as a few other pointed out, actually a wall covered in projection canvas. The wall had cutouts that a person behind the wall maneuvered, including the spinning of the "cradle". The person behind the wall is the woman that you see at the end of the clip. This staging is very complex and was executed to perfection. But, its still a copy of Swedens entry from 2015 that won that year.

I haven't seen any explanation how they did it, but I assume they had a screen with removable/moving blocks. Pink Floyd did it years ago. Have a look onto Roger Waters performance of The Wall in 2011-2013 (don't remember the exact year) Anyway, there was a giant wall (screen) with amazing animation on it and it transformed thought the show

My winner of 2016 (Ukraine was a worthy winner though)!! As mentioned, there's no backstage videos of how Sergey does - I wish there was - but all I know is the wall was slightly angled (based on pictures), the screen was made of a special material and he wore specific shoes. You should check out Sergey's others, there's so many incredible songs ❤ Keep up the great work and greetings from the UK 😊

@alexsandra54134 жыл бұрын
