Not only that but as someone who doesn’t want to spend too much time on colour grading, for me it looks great straight out of the camera. What so many people don’t accept is that an action camera is built for action in predominantly bright conditions. They are not designed to replace a video camera or stills camera or to perform well in low light. Use action cameras for ACTION and accept their limitations.

The mentioned timestamps are super bad on the OM5 and its getting worse at 11:05 where there absolutely no details in the snow in the background. No tracks nothing on the OM5. I'm happy that I went with the GP13 just yesterday and even bumped the Bitrate to 200 thanks to labs. DJI is also known for giving NDAs for day 1 reviewers who received the cam for free so that makes sense. Though I have to say that the OM5 have a lot QoL features which I'd love to have on the GP, like the fast charging, oled screens etc. But imagine quality is the most important for me and there the OM5 fails. Hello, thank you for this helpful video. I considered the Action 5 Pro for POV skiing videos, as sharpness and clarity in snow footage are crucial for capturing a broader perspective of the surrounding landscapes and environment. However, I wasn’t entirely impressed with the Action 5 Pro's clarity and sharpness in expansive scenes like mountains and snow, as the footage often has a blueish tint and struggles with rougher textures, especially over larger ranges. I wanted to ask if you’ve noticed a loss of detail with Action 5 on certain textures during the recording. While some suggest the Action 5 Pro appears oversharpened, I find it lacks clarity and depth on rough surfaces like gravel, snow, concrete roads, structures, and even vegetation, whereas other cameras seem to preserve sharper detail, especially in snow, maintaining the realistic snow tone color. Do you think these issues, such as the blueish tint and lack of depth, can be fixed through settings adjustments, color grading, or a firmware update to enhance clarity and improve texture highlights? My priority is the best image quality for snow and mountain ranges similar to your footage in Alaska.

I was actually thinking of buying it as I was sick of my Sony action cam with suuuperb image quality and optical image stabilization due to its batteries dying really quickly in cold and thrown it away. I see lesser details on snow conditions and mountains at the back, compared to Gopro. And I'll mostly shoot 2K, so I'll even get less details. And how about the scene where you had trees in the background, the Action 5 looks like it's blurred the trees? They're much more vibrant and detailed, like what the real eye sees, in Gopro. So I'm a bit confused now what to buy as I know Gopro batteries will make me sick while skiing as well. AMAZING VIDEO! It made me subscribe! i got the Action 5 yesterday. ¿Do you think you can do a high bitrate + color graded 10bit+ -0.3ev stops to see if it can retain better detail on the snow behind you? I´m just really wondering why it looks so much better contrast and detail on the gopro.
@JakeSloanАй бұрын
yes if you expose -0.3 or even -0.7 in conditions like these you will get better detail as well as when you shoot in D-log M the HDR look goes away which also helps

Good fair review. I've had GoPro's for many years, and tried the Action 3, but still favor the GoPro despite the lower battery time. One thing I think would be a good test review is to do some multicam videos and compare how GoPro sync vs Action's 5 sync would work out in the real world if using 3+ cameras. I've also installed the GoProLabs firmware for multicam LTC syncing. If your outdoors, the GPS sync is another option, but I found inconsistent. The easiest way to sync multiple GoPro's is using the QRcode with the QRControl app, which makes post-production much faster.

I wish I could find this solid of a comparison based around using them for scuba diving. I wasn't happy with my GoPro12 in some instances while diving, I'm assuming due to lack of light. Really having trouble deciding between the Ace Pro 2 and Action 5 for that use case.
@JakeSloanАй бұрын
yeah I don't dive unfortunately. but off hand I would say the action 5 is the better of the 3, it has better low light performance and tru color underwater video mode as well as depth sensors etc
@bryanji7572Ай бұрын
Thank you for the review! This is really helpful for me, as I'm new to the world of action cameras. I was initially leaning towards the DJI Action 5, but I don't like how it seems to be... missing a lot of details in the image, for example the footprints on the ground and all the small fissures/snowdrifts in the background at 1:36 and 11:13. So now I'm leaning more towards the GoPro, despite the inferior performance w.r.t. overheating and battery life.

@JakeSloanАй бұрын
yeah that mostly is just how it is exposed you can recover much of that detail in post with some adjustments or exposing at -0.3 to -0.7 in camera
@PNWEnduroАй бұрын
Hate to say it but the GP looks the best in most of this video, the details in the snow and the mountains stand out more. However, I've owned several GoPro's and they all eventually fail whether is freezing, recording without audio or randomly shutting of so I just can't trust them anymore. I would have bought the AP2 if it was actually available anywhere but ended up with the Action 5 and a DJI Mic 2 transmitter as my new POV setup.

Any suggestions?
@Untied_ShoelaceАй бұрын
I agree man, In many cases, Action 5 performs well. However, I wasn’t entirely impressed with the Action 5 Pro's clarity and sharpness in expansive scenes like mountains and snow, as the footage often has a blueish tone and struggles with rougher bright textures, especially over larger ranges. Maybe the biggest cause of it is the HDR look. Additionally, I noticed that the forest is less sharpened with the snow and fog. I really hope there's an update to sharpen the image in already bright conditions and d-log m will achieve a comparable result to other cameras by adjusting sharpness and color grading to enhance clarity and improve texture highlights in expansive scenes like mountains and snow. I'm struggling with this decision as well.
@JakeSloanАй бұрын
unfortunately the weak point of gopro is lowlight. if you have a lot of accessories and a small light for low light filming then the gopro can do ok, otherwise the action 5 is where it's at especially if you add the DJI mic 2 in for clean audio anywhere

3:15 massive difference in colours and whit balance, saturation, contrast and so on. Hero 13 has darker overall scene, but really noticible on the jacket. Action 5 has brighter orange jacket. Trees don't have dark areas. No only is the jacket brighter but the face too. Ace Pro 2 has cooler snow, darker but more orange jacket, darker trees. I don't know which is more are closest to reality as they all look realistic but like different weather.

I think DJI action 5 Pro is the new king of the action cameras only because they have an actual ecosystem meaning that you can match different cameras. You can match it with the pocket. 3. The pocket 3 also does a better job and low light than the ace Pro 2. Plus it has the 10-pick color grading. I don't think the ace Pro 2 is a bad camera but having cameras is more about video. You have to have good audio as well. The the action 5 Pro has two mic capability. The color grading time code. It has everything that a real Pro Camera should have. You can even do cinematic filming with it. The other thing is is that they are doing a firmware updates. It came off on a rocky start but they're starting to make the tweaks that it needs and they are listening to the people that bought the cameras and making the improvements accordingly. There's when you buy an expensive action camera you want support like that so that if you are having difficulties, you know that the manufacturer is trying to solve the issue. I agree with what you were saying about the ace Pro 2. The first generation had focusing issues. This one is better but it still has focusing issues. Nobody was talking about that. They're trying to make it like a vlogging camera, but they're saying well it can't you know don't put it up against the pocket 3 because that's not a fair fight. However, if you're going to promote it as a login camera, well, it is a fair fight between that and the pocket 3 fair is fair. Don't promote it as a login camera and then say well. Don't put it up against the pocket. 3. I seen the footage the pocket 3. Went out on the low light footage. I think the best combination is the pocket 3. The action 5. Pro or the action 4. The only thing I really don't like about the auction 5. Pro is the lens flare issue is a bit bothersome, but I own a three and a four and the three had virtually no lens flare because it doesn't have that low light sensitivity. So it's the coating on the lens that's causing this flare

At 7:50 I will say that Action 5 have most realistic colors since snow should have blue tint from the blue sky (its reflective). Gopro tend to show red closer to orange and that I have seen from other videos aswell. Ace Pro 2 looks more like a cheaper brand with its lack of close focus. I do like all 3 brands but from your test it seems like Action 5 is softer than mine is when I have mine at -2 Texture. But I will not say either is a winner here, they all do well. My choose is still Action 5, batterylife and no major issues.

I have two GoPros - a 7 and a 10 - and I bought an Ace Pro (not the 2) but returned it as the video quality was very bad especially once you enabled horizon levelling which is a must for me. I then bought the DJI Action 5 and, as with your video, the quality of the images still doesn't come close to the GoPros but there are some "usability" features that mean I'm keeping it - namely the ability to connect two wireless mics in reasonable quality as many cameras will support connecting a wireless mic but only in very low quality. So pretty much my experiences are similar to yours - if you want decent video then the GoPro is the one to beat except for the very specific case where you need to shoot in low light in towns.
