Today, I will show you how to sand and polish epoxy resin to a glass finish. Having a resin project is nice, but having a resin art project that has a crystal clear glass finish is satisfying when you know how to make it happen. I show you how to dry sand, wet sand, use abrasive paste, and buff your resin lathe projects to a crystal clear, shiny finish. I hope you enjoyed the video!

Hey Jake! DOUG suggested we come learn some of your techniques for sanding and polishing resin. I use the micro sanding pads on my small stuff like acrylic pens and bottle stoppers. One thing I learned when I used to do body and paint, while wet sanding a panel I’d use a few drops of dish soap in my sanding water. It breaks the surface tension and the water stays with the project and doesn’t dry out as fast. Give it a try and see what you think. Thanks for sharing!

Wondering why you don’t Wet Sand with the Abranet? It works really well and reduces the dust…. Also, why DNA between grits when wet sanding? Doesn’t the water wash off the dust? Thanks for such a great video!

After I made this video I started to wet sand with abranet. Water will work between grits but I like to do it to be sure to get all the old grit off, and it looks awesome and you get to see what it’s going to look like.. but either will work.. I’m glad you enjoyed the video. 👍👍

I really learned a lot from your video. I just wish you could suggest what other appliance or way to sand and polish if we don’t have access to the type of machines you have. I was excited but kinda got discouraged. If you have any suggestions what we can use if we don’t have those machines. I’ve got grinders, sanders, multi tool, Dremel, Diamond sanding pads, etc. I need the polishes, and compounds. Please let me know any suggestions you’ve got. Thank you

Thank you for watching and I’m glad you were excited at first. Lol this all can be done by hand or random orbital sanders or the other tools you mentioned. You can put small buffing wheels on a drill and buff that way.. I have shown that on a few on my more recent videos.. I have done flat projects with an orbital sander and then wet sand by hand .. it came out pretty well.. I hope I helped you. Jake

@@JakeThompson Actually I found that with resin, you can buy "Fullers Earth" for that is all Yorkshire grit basically is, on Ebay and just make your own paste with a little water. It works just as well and you can also buy different grades for different grit equivalents. Won't work on wood because it soaks up the water so you need some sort of oily base such as Yorkshire Grit has. Keep up the good work.

Even if nothing else was useful, which it WAS, there were two really good tidbits in there: first, I knew that lathe artists often use denatured alcohol between grits, but not WHY. Second, that tip about using woodworking wax grit to polish headlights is SUPER COOL! Thank you, this is a great video!

I loved this video. It helped a lot. I have a few questions. First the Yorksire grit that you used, is there another brand you recommend that is good? Second if you dont have a machine like you have to hold onto the buffer wheels and the item your working on, does using a drill with the attachment work just as good? Third have you ever used Incredible Solutions or used Naked Fusion for your projects. I am trying to figure which i should go with or go with the one you use. I do some big projects (tables etc.), some medium sized (cutting boards, wall art etc.) and some small (coasters, jewlery etc.)if that helps with the recomendation. Lastly I was wondering how you go about getting your items to sell when you first started. I have a digital store and not really a place to sell out of. Do you have any suggetions for someone trying to sell their work? (if this is to forward you can private message me) Thank you for the cool video :)
@JakeThompson

Thank you for watching.. I use Yorkshire grit.. If you are in the states you can get it from the walnut log. You can do this sanding process completely by hand or with drill attachments. As far as selling your work if you don’t have a social media presence.. family and friends is a good start and word of mouth will take over.. I started off doing craft shows.. it’s fun and you get your name out there.. I hope this helps

Jake I dont have a lathe nor the space for it. Can I still hand sand my resin project? And why sand at all? Some resins are already clear like glass. Will UV resistant resin keep from yellowing? I cast resin only once about 10 years ago and it yellowed unfortunately. All the nice work ruined. So I am a beginner with resin casting. Thank you for this tutorial. Please stay healthy and safe. Take care.
@JakeThompson
@JakeThompson 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching.. I’m glad you enjoyed the video. If the resin comes out shiny there’s no need to sand. You can hand sand projects that are not on the lathe.. The UV resistant resins are supposed to stay clear. 👍👍😄
