I stabilized lump charcoal, encased it in EasyCast resin and turned it on the wood lathe. The result?
Well, besides the colossal mess I have to clean up? I created a beautiful bowl. A beautiful bowl with a surprisingly unexpected secret.

Lets quickly address safety. I don't recommend anyone turning charcoal. You need a respirator (which I had), and some way to contain the dust! I had both a dust collector and a full overhead shop air filter running. I filmed in short spurts, and this took me almost a full afternoon to turn as I keep the sessions to a few minutes at a time. Be safe, Don't try this at all.

I know this video is nearing a year old. But that is a great surprising end result for making a charcoal resin bowl. I would of never thought to place it under a black light. With a little bit a effort you could make some nice little night lights. A small toddler would stare at that in the dark , and simple wonder how that happens, till they slip off to sleep. Or in an area at night to find your way around in the dark. I love it.

The dust coming off that lookes hella explosive might want to isolate it from anything that may spark. (but the product looks well worth it)

I *DESPERATELY* hope you were wearing a breathing mask working with all that charcoal dust. edit: I just read your comment. I'm glad you were protecting your lungs. The bowl looks AMAZING btw.

Breathing in clean carbon doesn't hurt you but this plastic one sure would.

@@SnorrioK Breathing in any amount of particulates isn't good for your lungs, that's why you're body has a defense system in place to filter regular air and help keep your lungs clear. The amount of carbon dust that Peter would have been breathing without a respirator would have been extremely hazardous and likely lead to intense respiratory distress.

We as humans through about 1.500.000 years have been breathing all kinds of dust into our lungs and have therefore developed a counter mechanism called coughing. Regular materials like carbon, rust, sand etc. are okay to breath in because when there's too much, we cough it up and clear our lungs. The carbon particles in Peter's case are poisonous because of the plastic in them but with pure carbon only, it's fine. Otherwise your ancestors who worked in coal mines would have been dead a lot sooner than they were.

I've noticed you always leave the wood along in the stabilising resin after getting all the bubbles out. Have you ever considered swapping it over to the pressure pot afterwards to force the fluid into the empty cavities. Or would that not work?
