Nothing wrong with going in as an Infantry Officer, and then going Green Berets. It's a prestigious position, you're going to be a part of the SOF scapel, and have a very high op tempo. Maybe your missions arent as specific or high speed as units like DEVGRU or CAG, but if you have that unconventional warfare billet youre going to get a bunch of interesting deployments. Plus as an officer on an ODA, you’ll get to be in the stack with your soldiers and get just enough action that when it's time to ride the desk, your body likely won't be able to handle kicking down doors much longer. Plus you are a liason to the local fighting force, and will get to display your intelligence and competence by being the ambassador for the ODA. A lot of Enlisted SOF guys don't have the luxury of doing their 20yrs like an Officer. Jumping out of planes and humping 100lb packs into your late 30s is unrealistic for most people.

Darrel, The timeline that Jake gave you regarding the path to just arriving at BUD/S is the correct timeline if you were to try to go in as an Officer with top-tier PST scores, & happened to get picked up for OCS & SOAS, and made it through as a top performer. This is a VERY competitive route to get a slot for, with very few slots actually available per-year. (Think about the college/professional-level athletes who also want to become SEAL Officers) Most SEAL Officers are bred from younger ages by either going to the Naval Academy, spending 2-3 years serving in the Navy as an Officer with a different job & then making a “Lateral-Transfer” to go to BUD/S, or as already enlisted SEALs who get picked up for a Commission to go to OCS after years of exemplary service in the Teams as an enlisted SEAL. If you are 100% determined to become a SEAL, then it is still possible, but it is 100% up you to make it happen. If you were completely determined to pursue the SEAL route, but weren’t too keen on the Officer route or timeline, then I would recommend going in with an enlisted SEAL contract (SO), because taking that route to get to BUD/S is much shorter, and you could always try to become an Officer later on if you proved to be an exemplary enlisted SEAL. I think the last statistic I’ve heard about this is that 70% or more actively-serving enlisted SEALs have college degrees. Or, Jake isn’t lying about the Army Infantry Officer route. That could be another good option for you, if you don’t have 100% confidence in making it through the SEAL pipeline. Your job would be learning how to lead groups of young infantry soldiers, in multiple different aspects. And you could eventually try to go into Army SF from there. (I know very little about the Army SF pipelines myself) Either way Darrel, or any other young candidate who may be reading this, the decision is entirely up to you. It’s all about knowing exactly what you want, and how bad you actually want it. Blessings, -From a guy who wanted to become a SEAL at 18-19, and got discharged on Processing Day-4 of Navy bootcamp due to a ridiculous series of paperwork mistakes which ultimately resulted from myself not knowing how to properly navigate the SEAL enlistment process correctly, and falling for/getting confused by a series of lies. Don’t be me.

It can be a logistical cluster F. Friend of mine was dropped from second phase, told he could return, after two years wasn’t allowed back. And this is a guy who trained for years and was a stud, dropped out last minute from the Academy to go enlisted. Such a freaking mess 🤦🏻‍♂️ dudes still get injured severely after first phase, another friend was kicked out for a reason I don’t even want to mention because it sounds unreal lol super unforgiving community that’ll throw you at the wall and if you don’t stick then the attitude is kick rocks.

I agree w/ you regarding NG. Also..once you are in...any injuries and issues they can stop you from active duty. When i went from E to O it was a pain in the ASS. And any concussions, knee injuries, etc...all are on your record right in front of them. I was able to make it, but going from E to O or from Reserve to active is NOT a guarantee and you don't just "switch over". I would always say go active FIRST because going from active to reserve is a hell of a lot easier than Reserve to active.

I get a feeling sometimes people in these videos only want to hear what they want to hear. A lot of them think it is a foregone conclusion they can just sign up and it looks so damn easy, they won't have any problems. One thing with the run times, right now these people are in their world. They get up in the morning, maybe have that energy drink, some orange juice, they are feeling good, it is a nice day to run, so they go at it. (I don't know about nowadays, maybe that is how things work in the military now). When you first get to any training, plan on adding 20% to those times. You might get them back down, but you are not going to have 3-4 days to recuperate. The reality is you can't go all out everyday. Some people can, but sometimes your body can't give 100% all the time. Mental acuity. I will walk in there, they will see how smart I am. When you are in a classroom, that shit flies. Stress and pressure play on your brain, 4 people screaming at you, the decision making processes start to break down. You need to learn to do without thinking. You do learn those things, but it is not automatic. It is crazy, nobody says I want to be a heart surgeon, and thinks how hard can it be? I will just go to medical school and boom, I will be operating on human hearts. Try operating on that heart with 4 people screaming you are an idiot, you made the incision wrong, you just killed your patient, etc, etc, etc. That is my point, people have this perception that the military is easy. They want to be an airforce pilot, how hard can that be? I can get a pilot's license in a few months at a local airfield, yeah but what happens when you need years of training and schools, you have to take the SERE course, etc. Once you finish whatever training or schools you go to, if you want to advance, you can not stop. You need to maintain that intensity. Just don't be an asshole doing it.

Bro they do not do the same shit as seals. We do work with the tier 1 element of Seals but we are trained in a whole different thing than seals man..basics: Rangers aren’t free fall qualified, we aren’t dive certified, Rangers ARE the top DA raid unit. I’ve never worked with a vanilla seal, I’ve seen some but only have done stuff on deployment with a tier 1 element of seals. So if you are referring to devgru seals then yes they can do the same mission

If you can't swim, you will have a very hard time at Buds and the instructors will find your weakness and weed you out. To be a Seal you need to love the water and I mean everything, under, surface, cold water and be comfortable under duress. He is better off at the Army at 24 years is old is kinda late to start to be at the level you need to be when you get to Buds. He won't even pass pre-Buds if he can't swim 1 mile under a specific time.

people wonder why so many people arent navy seals or rangers or whatever SO and wonder why they dont make it and they say that they wont quit but when ur in the actual situation of being disciplined and working out and getting your contract and being in the situation of signing a contract ur mind is going through so much and a lot of people psyche themselves out and get anxiety and dont want to go through the unknown of Basic and BUD/s or OSUT. people even get psyched out of even leaving to go to basic like flying from cali to georgia for army or somewhere to illinois or cali. During training you get put under a lot of stress for the most part, fun parts though like shooting and just being in the field but constantly training and making it so you dont get kicked or for bud/s getting dropped for something. Then there's the extra percentage of the people who arent physically fit and thats why theres low numbers in SO community. People think workout go to SO training and then ur an operator and get to kill people but the reality is the day-to-day shit that fucks with people and makes them quit or do one enlistment. Then theres the ones that thrive and do 10+-20+ year careers and retire. Its how ur body is made, ur either gonna fail, do an enlistment or more, or max ur career out and retire. Then another thing is family, a lot of people get depressed that I've known because of constant deployments and never seeing family, getting a relationship and it not working out because of your lifestyle. You'll never know which type of person you are unless you pursue what you want and then you'll see who you are
