A viewer asked me to compare the PSA JAKL to the Brownells BRN-180. So, we take a look at both, compare them and I decide if I could only have one - which one would it be?

The JAKL reminds me of the 1st gen MCX. Heavy and unrefined, with rolling changes being done as it came out. Which eventually turned into the light weight version of the MCX. If I was a betting man, I would wager that we’ll see a “light weight” JAKL come out in the foreseeable future. They just gotta figure out what parts do and don’t need to be overbuilt.

Nothing on any PSA gun is overbuilt. It's heavy but not overbuilt. It's just sloppy.

And before Sig did its beta testing on the gen 1 mcx and the verstus, they did the same damn thing with the sig556. Put an A1 profile barrel on it, lost the fish gills and quadrants and you got a lighter, better but less modular gun. And then quit supporting it Ala the mcx, and vertus.

I have a JAKL I've put some rounds through, and I think the biggest single thing they can shave weight on is the handguard. Idk if the longer railed variants are thinner, but on my 10.5" the handguard is DUMMY thick. I imagine they could shave some weight off of it since it's monolithic, but I'm no engineer lol. Would also like to see them move to a different barrel profile and something more standardized with the AR pattern for the barrel fitting, but that might not be possible without an expensive redesign.
@TheCamaro5
@TheCamaro5 10 ай бұрын
After owning one that is 100 percent false. The monolithic upper and rail and barrel are too thick or over built. If they made the mono lithic upper half the thickness and the rail the same they could shave some weight. But for now its built like a tank. I found that with the right forgrip the weight is not longer an issue.@@armorers_wrench

Brownells just rolled out a "Gen 3" BRN-180. Ejection port is more sealed to prevent debris from getting in, and the charging handle has been shrunk in size and moved to the other side of the upper. They've also captured the internals so they don't pop out when you disassemble the rifle.

I'm holding off on buying a Jakl until the kinks are all worked out and it reaches its final Super-Saiyan form, I'm also excited about the 308 version. What brings me to side with the Jakl is the swappable charging handle, the AK-like gas system, and knowing that PSA will continue to upgrade and support the system, unlike my ACR.

Agreed, in a year or three when they're done iterating on it, the JAKL will be a fine rifle. But I don't think I'll be purchasing one even then. Replacing perfectly good, functioning and kitted out PSA guns that I own with a JAKL just doesn't make sense. If it was modular enough to run the three calibers I care about(5.56, 300BLK, and 308) off one highly durable chassis that'd be one thing. One lower and two or three uppers would be an interesting thing. But I don't think that's how it works. So unless I have a really tragic boating accident, I'll pass. BRN180 is neat, but in the same boat. I suppose this is only an issue for people who dearly want piston guns.

I’ve picked up a BRN180 and have been very happy with it. I’ve told myself I’ll hold off on a JAKL upper until a pencil-barrel version or updated gen-II version is released - will likely just grab the 13.9 P&W upper and throw it onto one of my spare sat-night-special Anderson lowers.

I love seeing innovation in the industry, and I wish all of these companies coming out with unique designs great success. But they (PSA, CMMG, Sig, Perun, etc.) really need to stop putting charging handles so far forward and so close to the top rail. Robinson Armament figured it out years ago, put the charging handle further back just above the magwell. This way it doesn't interfere with your grip when you go to C-clamp it, and also you don't scrape your knuckles on your optic when you charge it. Minor nit-picking I know, truly I do hope these companies do well and continue to improve on their new and interesting designs. Thanks for another fun video Tim!

I appreciate that they sponsor you and other gun tubers. But Im not a big fan of the private gun schools advertising. Because there are some expert gun smiths like school of the modern rifle, or ex-military armors. But setting an expectation that they need to pay tens of thousands for schooling before they can put their skills into practice in the field seems setting up the same cycle of never ending debt as other industries.
@fraudsniffer7280
@fraudsniffer7280 10 ай бұрын
My problem with these online gunsmithing programs is two-fold. First, they largely exist to siphon GI Bill and federal student loan money. I’ll guarantee most of their students are using one of those two payment methods. Second, and more important, gunsmithing is a skilled trade. And like with any skilled trade you REALLY should learn it in-person rather than mostly online. I don’t care what anyone says…learning isn’t equally effective with both approaches. There’s no substitute for having an instructor literally standing by you as you learn. The last two gunsmiths I used were horrible. They seriously didn’t know what they were doing. Wanna guess what both had in common? They had “learned” gunsmithing from one of these online schools. I’m afraid these schools are likely churning out people who really don’t have a full and well-developed skill set, in turn flooding the market with people who probably don’t have much business calling themselves “gunsmiths”. There IS a demand for gunsmiths but finding one who actually knows what they’re doing is getting harder and harder.

Agreed. Honestly CST (and other schools) are set up to maximize profit and maximize GI Bill intake. They had absolutely turned CST into a cash cow. That being said, most of the instructors knew what they were doing and the real Rubicon is getting to work on actual customer guns enough times that you figure out what the hell's going on. The reality is, there are many types of guns you can specialize in and some of them you'll make money doing. You're not going to get rich repairing Grandpa's shotgun. The other fact of life that comes with going to gunsmithing school, is that less than 10% of those students will actually become gunsmiths. Experienced dedication and hard work get you there like any other skilled technical job, and there is plenty of work to be done. Pick something you love doing and specialize in that. You do it long enough and you'll be an expert.

Great video! JAKL definitely needs a break in. I’m not sure exactly why but it could be reduced internal upper dimensions due to the cerakote. The gas system also needs more gas (perhaps a larger gas port). Mine runs fine on max gas but only on max gas. There is a lot of mass reciprocating with each shot so the shooting experience is very different than an AR. It’s a nice rifle and a great AR/AK hybrid if that’s what you’re looking for. The BRN-180 has been out for a while and generally is higher quality (less QC issues) in my opinion. We have one with around 8k rounds on it and it’s a very soft shooting rifle. Having both I would buy a 180. However, if you open up the options I would consider the Bren 2 over both and if you can afford it, the Spear LT is pretty nice. Besides it being slightly heavy once I fitted mine out, my Jakl is my favorite toy. Im going to slim it down soon. I got the 16” variant in FDE, PSA had a good deal on them a couple months ago for $1100.

JMO: I bought and returned one of the first BRN 180 uppers. Cost was over $800.00. The accuracy was 2.5" at best, 100 yards. Fit and finish was not $800.00. The cost is extensive, and I think both Brownell and PSA are way out of line on price. It's just an upper and like you said, simple design.

I'd pick the Jakl because it doesn't have that cutout in the upper receiver for the reciprocating charging handle. That cutout just makes it easier for debris to get into the internals and cause a malfunction

With a few updates ,the rra pds would be a very good option . Give it a 1/8 twist barrel instead of 1/9, chf qpq nitrided, a few cartridge options and a few other options like barrel profile , brackets to use standard AR barrels ,ect. . It sadly never took off like it deserved too. It was made when rra was pioneering designs . They made the first Dedicated pistol caliber carbine lowers for Glock mags at about the same time they created their short stroke piston system carbine with non reciprocating forward charging handle , side folding stock, adjustable gas system and easily changed handguards for rails or no rails. Personally I think it's ascetics are really good too.

With the jakl, you also have to change your bolt catch. It was a toss up between the Jakl and brn but I went with the Jakl because they had a 14.5 pin and weld option.

That's MAC for the overview. I really want to see the same changes to the JAKL as you mentioned. It's just too front heavy for 2024 standards. PSA, let's do something about it! Also, how structurally sound is the JAKL barrel to upper fitment? Is it really just a few screws? 🤔

Looking at the BRN-180 is like looking into the past, it is so old-school and that is where it will stay. The JAKL is more modern and is still being improved, which I like! And since I am a huge fan of AR-10 rifles over the AR-15, I am excited about the JAKL in 308 coming out soon. I look at the JAKL as the future in rifle design at a great price point. And as with any new rifle design there are always bugs to work out. What I do find is that the problems they had with the AR-15 rifle when they first come out were not a problem with the AR-10 that came out first and work great from the get-go! Plus, PSA make quality rifles, and I have no doubt they are well on their way to bringing in another classic rifle.

I already have the jakl and a few ar's in different calibers. I love my jakl. The forend gets hot so I use a foregip. It's definitely front heavy. The model I have I believe is newer than the 1 you have in the video.

Love the 180 and the smooth recoil. Was planning on getting a jakl with the pinned muzzle for my suppressor. Once i finally received my hux suppressor, I'm taken back a bit by the added weight. I also added a new optic. Everything is pretty heavy. Knowing the jakl is heavier, even with a couple inches less barrel, has me paused on that decision. I'm not totally someone who loves optics but the whole setup with a suppressor just feels like unnecessary weight. The brn is really a quiet contender here. I'd love to see them expand and build upon that product. They need product developers with the aptitude of PSA but the engineering chops of Brownells contractor builders.

The 'dog leg' charge handle is a problem for some rail-mounted devices on BRN180's creating pinch-points. A3 Tactical makes several versions of the charge handle that offer ergonomic and anesthetic improvements.

TL;DR: the BRN180 is a more refined product. The AR18 gas system has been used in a number of other guns and is well understood. The JAKL is still a “work in progress”-which is fine, just understand that it’s a newer, not as well tested design, and PSA is still getting feedback from the field and incorporating that feedback into the design as the product evolves.

I like the Jakl on paper.. In practice, I'd go with the BRN 180 just on quality alone. I've had a 10.5'' BRN 180s Gen2 in .223 wylde for over 2 years on an Anderson lower, it's been flawless and surprisingly accurate.

Tim: 8:45 "Any AR upper will pin to the BRN180 lower" Maybe it will pin to it, but the AR upper as a traditional DI gun is incompatible! The solid rear cast lower with 'Pic rail' stock attachment will not accommodate the BCG and buffer system of an AR. You can however put a BRN180 upper on a milspec AR lower. Perhaps that's what you were thinking

Wolf A1 (T91) Upper is my pick for an AR180 style system. Lighter than both, combat proven, choice of barrel length (12, 14, 16"), and less expensive at $600. They're at AIM Surplus.

Always great videos MAC, thanks. I am interested in a long-stroke piston system, and most likely will get a PWS MK116 Comp rifle, but also want a JAKL, primarily because it’s different looking and unique at that price point. I am curious if anyone owns the PWS and JAKL and purely from operations of the two your thoughts, given both being long-stroke.

A3 Tactical is in the process of trickling out a bullpup chassis for both these uppers (and FM) and I’ve got a pistol version on order for my .300BLK JAKL. If PSA would do a 13.7” P&W upper in .300 I’d pick a rifle version up for that as well but waiting to see how the Triad runs as a pistol chassis first and likely will try the rifle version for my BRN-180 uppers as well. It’ll be short, even with a can, that’s for sure! JAKL Triad takes a new front hand guard which adds to complexity so I figured simpler versions would be easier if I could figure out the pistol bullpup.

I bought a BRN-180 556 rifle upper when the only options were pistol or rifle length. because I wanted an AR that would function with the stock folded. It was on sale for $750 & I mated it with a PSA theme lower. I completed the lower with a Sylvan Arms folding stock adapter, minimalist stock, lower completion parts from my parts stock. Including FFL transfer fee, sales tax on the stripped lower & FFL transfer I have less than $200 in the lower. I probably will replace the muzzle device with one with ASR suppressor mount. My Silencer Central Banish 30 & Silencer Co Hybrid 46M and Omega 300 all have ASR mounts.
