Galit Zadok, recorder
Arjen De Graaf, violin
Elise van der Wel, violin
Yotam Haran, cello
Daria Polak, harpsichord
There is little information about the origins if this cantata (ca. 1717) ; we do not know who the recorder virtuoso Greber had in mind was, when composing this piece. It was definitely composed for a particular person; the manuscript tells that Jakob Greber (ca. 1673-1731) was already Kapellmeister of Karl Philipp and the watermarks suggest it to have been composed during his Neuburg period around 1717. It is composed in the common Italian cantata structure of the 18th century: Recitativo-Aria, Recitativo-Aria.
The text and music are somewhat composed with irony, since the theme of the abandoned woman referred to in the text should have
been expressed as a Lament or Furioso. The text makes use of no metaphors to suggest the pastoral or bird-like elements, which would justify the fluttering figures of the recorder, on the other hand these make it a unique and appealing piece. With thanks to the Green Man Press edition, for the score, and for Michael Hofmeister for editing the score.
Live recording from Galit's Zadok final exam of the recorder department at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam.
