Borderlands Granular is without a doubt one of the most loved iOS Music Apps out there and it just received a proper upgrade. Apart from having a look at all of the new features in the new update, we’ll also be hearing from Chris Carlson himself, the guy who created this Granular Synth beast. Join me and discover how Chris has improved on an already brilliant Granular synth concept!

😱 This is why I was I didn’t post anything during the end of December and beginning of January! I was working on this video for a month. It’s feels good to share it with you all. Btw, Chris is basically giving this update away for free which is very generous of him. If you want to support him and his continued work on Borderlands Granular, why not buy him a coffee through his donation button here >>> www.borderlands-granular.com/app/

Great vid, Jakob! Chris did a fine job upgrading his baby. Lets hope more app makers are inspired by this effort. I hope Chris not only makes a Boarderlands 2 ($) with an AUv3 side-tool (maybe just one audio strip?) but dreams up even more quirky, interesting features. But I also want (need?) someone to make a "proper" plain old AUv3 slicer. Granular is great for exploring chaotic, shimmering "arty" sounds, but a nice straight ahead AUv3 sample slicer seems more what folks need.

Your stuff just keeps getting better and better. Love Borderlands. The only issue I have with it, its so good as it is right away. I hadn’t considered many of the advanced options and use cases because it was providing so much immediately. Chris seems like a really thoughtful and intelligent programmer. Would love to see him collaborate with the creator of Samplr on something this decade. Great stuff!

Touching sounds? Grainclouds? Are you guys trippin? Nope. This is reality now. Big thanks to very smart guys, like Chris, who think differently. This app feels right. It fits the human mind well, and in a way that clicking and keystrokes just can’t...touch. In the weird and wonderful category the Oscar goes to...(opening envelope)...Borderlands! So Jakob, in the opening shot, you know we could see you, right? Thank you synth guru.

Great update video, Jakob. First one was great too. I’m wondering how Borderlands manages the selection and sequencing of the grains in a cloud. Is it random? If it's not random, is it possible to alter the pattern of grain selection?

Borderlands is one of those apps that I had bought long ago, but never used. While doing some research for granular apps, as I was inspired by toying with it in the new Sampler instrument in Logic Pro X. I found that BG was one of those apps, and I guess one of the top apps for this. I played around with it tonight for awhile,, and it’s really cool. I know it has potential. I look forward to the AUv3 implementation to use with apps like Zenbeats, but it’s a great app on its own. Thanks for this!

It's very unimportant thing but i guess for the sake of aesthetics/design of the app I'll just put it here - it would make sense (of course if possible) to have no frame around an audio file, but just to see the wave only of an imported/recorded sound. So you drag not a square document but only visualisation of a sound wave. It would not change anything, just a visual thing, if possible of course to accomplish. However - I love this app and - great interview, very honest and friendly.

Hey Jakob, lovely video! 👍🏻 I’m about to buy an IPad Mini (5th generation), my main usage will be to feed my hardware samplers with all the awesome iOS-synths and also use it for recording some performances, but mainly as a ”synth”. Need some advice! Will the 64gb be sufficient or should I get the 256gb?
@JakobHaq
@JakobHaq 4 жыл бұрын
If you do not intent to do heavy audio tracking type work with big wave files and or video work with big video files the. 64BG can last you a long time. Synthesizers are small in file size (unless they’re synth/ROMpler combos).

At one point I had all of my grain clouds dropping from the sky, making sounds as it passed my waveform. It just kept raining, it was great. How the hell did it happen and how do I make it happen again... Manual. If someone knows, please let me know, gravity button?

Funny thing is that the original gestrument app (named “gestrument legacy” nowadays) and Borderlands Granular came out during the same year (2012). Borderlands came first in October and Gestrument came out a month after in November. On another interesting note, SAMPLR also came out in November that same year. Those three apps properly demonstrated what could be done with a touch interface.

Recently I made a comment on one of your polls that AUV3 is not a must have but I’ve been deleting apps that don’t support it. I just finished watching your video with Marcos, developer of Samplr and his view on why no AUV3 made sene. Then to hear Chris essentially say the same thing. What the consumer wants and what the developer is able to deliver under the confines on the tools at the current moment rarely gel. This has caused me to change my views. Yes, still a nice feature to have, however, if the app provides fun and value in the standalone, keep it.
@JakobHaq
@JakobHaq 2 жыл бұрын
It’s a difficult line to walk. Apps like SAMPLR, borderlands granular and now Beatsurfing 2 does not really need AUv3. They are all apps that fully utilises the entire screen on their own. They’re fully fledged “instruments” once opened up and so making them smaller and having to em sit besides other plugin windows kinda holds them back. At least that’s what I feel. I love AUv3 but some apps does well on their own and constricting them to AUv3 standards kinda makes them less good. AUv3 is good, but not always needed.
