Jakob Haq I’ve never been this blown away by a synth review like the one done here for Shockwave. I was pretty sure that there was no new synth that would really excite me. I mean, Factory by Sugar Bytes covered everything I could think of having. Shockwave was absolutely an instant buy for me. Great review, dude!

Let's Sample This I so happy to hear that! This synth deserves to be checked out, so I really hope my vid manages to spread the word. Thank you for your kind words, really means a lot to me!
@letssamplethis76415 жыл бұрын
Jakob Haq sure thing. Your reviews have never failed to focus on things that I happen to think of that every other reviewer (sorry Doug) just glosses over. I’m not talking about anything critical here, but what would be really weird, obscure, or esoteric ideas of how the app or synth could be used. Shockwave was really a huge surprise for me because I felt after I got Factory and the rest of Sugar Bytes collection that there was not anything I could really want. There have been quite a few synths reviewed by you and company but none of them really measured up to creative pallet that is in Factory. That thing can do almost anything except...well...this; Shockwave.

Phase distortion is literally just another name for FM synthesis. Casio had to change some of the nomenclature to avoid Stanford's patent on FM synthesis, but it's the same type of synthesis with different modulation tools.

Sold. You've inspired me to get back into patch programming. Back in the dark ages I would spend around 6 months just programming sounds, then make the new album. These days there are sooooo many synths, with soooooo many presets, I have just relied mostly on tweaks, but I have ended up with synths I barely use, and some that I use all the time - none of which I ever really program. Also, thanks for the wee list at the start. I had no idea about Virtual ANS 3. I have the first one, which I still have installed, and I see is now missing from the app store.

It’s a good day to be Jakob! Congrats on sending forth your sounds into the world in such a cool synth. That alone makes this worth checking out. I used the CZ-101 in the mid 1980’s on tracks. It was a funky little beast that could get gritty and nasty and cut through the warm analog that I loved so much (too much??) By the way, loving your mellow album.
@JakobHaq5 жыл бұрын
John Deggendorf I had a huge amount of fun making patches for this beast. The way that Kai implemented the modulation menu, yeah it’s wonderfully easy to work this synth.

I loved that synth, regret selling my CZ101 now that theres so many editors out there. It was so good layered with other synths too like you said, esp analog basses, made them so huge. This app sounds somewhat like it, more than other “phase distortion” apps I’ve heard.
@johndeggendorf78265 жыл бұрын
HÄXANÄX ...didn’t get too deep into programming but did like to play with layering textures, like a warm analog string with a string patch from something edgy like a CZ or a had a cheap FB-01 Yamaha fm module. I didn’t like those synths alone so much, but they brought the scratch of the bow when layered with analog, I was using Sequential Cirquits stuff at the time.

Very nice review, Jakob. The synth sounds great, and congrats for having Kai include all the work you put into those patches as bundled presets - noice! 👍 My first impression is actually a theory ... it seems entirely possible that, if you layer Shockwave (w/ its lush internal reverb) and LaGrange synth (w/a Blackhole reverb on it) in AUM, you will see God 🤯

Great Video. Always enjoy your content. A quick question...At around the 4:05 mark, I am getting a horrible distortion in the audio. Is that my system, or is your audio clipping or distorting a bit? Is it the synth itself? I imagine that patch would be lush otherwise.
@JakobHaq5 жыл бұрын
It’s completely my fault. I accidentally duplicated the audio for that demo sound, so there’s two equally loud sounds playing there. I had corrected this in a new version but picked the wrong one when uploading. I then forgot to re-check the video in full after upload. 🤦♂️

Start from an Initalised patch. Use OSCillator 1, set it to a regular SAW waveform, increase ENV Rise, activate ENV Sustain, add Reverb, play a note and then tweak the BRIGHNESS knob of that OSCillator. I like it because It’s a very basic patch which needs no modulation setup and It sounds absolutely amazing! 😊👍🏼

I have quick question for you Jacob, I don’t know if you can answer it or not. So what I’ve done is bluetoothed everything including my modular which is a small set up and for now I’m running it BT MIDI through Neutron specifically because of it’s huge IO. I haven’t gotten around to playing with the cc values yet. Hears where it gets a little complicated, I have two or three single BT I got originally to connect stereo components to the iPad, they show up and connect but I don’t know how to get the technical information, I’m guessing there isn’t any because 1 it one designed that way and two most of the modules don’t have information to be viewed. So I thought I would start with something simple like a PO, and see what I can find out. Running through AUM can I name it, or just the port it’s entering on? I’m guessing any changes I decide to make will have to be done with another app like Koala, but my goal is to be able to enter individual modules (physical ones) into AUM and control them virtually. Any thoughts? Peace brother!

Ahhh Damn! Can’t CC/midi map the sequencer note selector knobs?!?!?! I was so excited to map the sliders of my LaunchPAd mini MK3 to those dials on the sequencer. It was going to be so much fun to work with. I had planned to use this for my live set this Friday and wooops. I think the developer forgot to add something here. So not everything can be mapped or modulated. I’m gonna send an email or tweet. The other recommendation I have is for the sequencer notes to be changed to match the note and scale of the keyboard.

Update: I’d had just searched on ‘synth’ in the App Store before checking out haQ attaQ. Found this video and in just minutes paused it, searched the App Store again and it was there! Bought it. Played with it for some three hours. Discovered all of YOUR PRESETS! (I really messed up your “Auto Mandala” 😉.) Great job man! Those are some fantastic presets. (I’ll take a lot of time and explore them.) Just like your videos. I always learn something from you and you always crack me up (and laughing is good medicine). I came back and un-paused your video as you then went into your presets. 🤓 For my money ShockWave is the best synth for 2019. I can’t wait to see what ambient music I can concoct with your tip about running the dual sequencers in 8-step parallel mode; with independent rates and resetting each sequencer on different steps! The depth of this synth is pretty amazing. I already have Volt. 🤓 again, great job! ----- Wow! Ohhh I love what I hear and see❣️ 💙😳 be right back. I have to go buy it. This sounds pretty cool, despite some people are having issues according to the reviews on the AppStore. With that said I’m going to get it anyway assuming the developer will update any issues, and because you say the app is good. I see you also have your NanoKey linked up by way of cord. Really hope that Bluetooth fix from Korg is coming along okay so I can use the app again. 🤞🏾 Just also want to say that I really, really like your videos because you get straight to the point, as well add a little humor to your video post. Most other reviewers do the opposite which causes me to lose interest in watching their videos.

People don't get the point of reviews in the App Store. They use it to get new features or complain about a bug. If you want tbat then send an email to the developer. Give him a chance to fix things before reducing his sales. Reviews there are to let others know how good or bad an app is. Not everyone actually read the reviews. They just see the number of stars and just move on if it is less than their expectation. So when I see things like a 1 star saying he will change it to 5 stars when a certain feature is added, a feature that most people may not care about. Apple should not allow stupid reviews. Or post an explanation of how to rate apps properly.
@myst4hire15 жыл бұрын
Perry Pelican agreed! I’m the type of person who will look past those low reviews and dig a little more into learning about the app and the developers track record. Not all apps are perfect at launch, but can be perfected by just letting the developer know what the issues are, instead of leaving a negative review like you said. Chances are he/she can fix it in no time.

Good intro for the Shockwave! Important question for me: Does the CC from midi learn go to multiple destinations? And can you just type in the CC midi if you know what you want to be active?

Use a few instances with polythemus to get polyphonic. Sounds great. Also I agree about midi learn, but there should also be a way to set a cc and shockwave has it. Those midi features should be forced. A developer who doesn't implement cool midi features should get their foot stepped on, not hard enough to break anything but enough to cause some pain.

I can not say that the App is in Sync with my other Apps so i gave it back to Apple Store.
