My Top 5 iOS Vocoders Apps for iPad and iPhone and my reasons why they’re my favourites. These Vocoders sound very different when compared to one another. Why is that? Well, we’re having a look at the “why” of it and in order to answer that question, we have to look at the “how” of it too. Want to know how a Vocoder works? We’re also having a look at stuff that make each Vocoder app stick out in some way. Check it out!

Cubasis does have AUv3 MIDI routing now. They implemented it back in May (2021) I did a video covering the update including all other improvements > kzbin.info/www/bejne/aHbKkoCcjMaHpZY Btw, it’s “Quneo” ... it’s “Qneo”

This is one of the best iOS music videos I’ve ever seen. It’s the passion for the subject matter, the attention to detail and the fact that, you’re so well versed in the apps functions. I’ve been looking forward to this vid because I’d like a vocoder. I think Dervoco looks like the one for me. I fancy being able to play my guitar and make masculine robot voices and say demonic things when the Post lady gets to the letterbox. Mature.

Thank you for watching. I definitely like all of these, but iVoxel is so far at the top. Yeah ... it’s got a somewhat “organic” vocoder sound to it. It might be why I love it. But man do I love doing bass-type stuff with Matrix Vocoder. Nothing quite does it like that one.

I totally „agree“ on your choice towards iVoxel! It has the most natural/organic sounding engine imho, if that makes sense. The Matrix Synth has this lo-fi touch which I like, too. Same for Voice Synth, but with more grit or dirt (compared to Matrix Synth). Hard to describe. Very interesting character comparison, Jakob. Thank you!

I think this is a super important point for those of us who play different instruments (e.g. guitar) instead of sending MIDI. I have all these vocoders and it wasn't until recent acquisitions of Matrix and DerVoco (and Drambo) that I realized you can do awesome guitar based vocoding in IOS.

If you are looking to vocode from a live sound (not MIDI) input like a guitar then pick up Matrix or DerVoco since they allow alternate carrier and modulator signals where the others do not. There is also some work being done in Drambo to create a modular vocoder with various input sources (as of July 2020).
@redbirdsaraceno

Another great sounding vocoder is on a pretty much forgotten about modular app that never got the credit it deserved is Jasuto , which ithink was never updated to ios 13 or possibly even ios 12 im not sure , but the tone on the vocoder is so smooth and warm sounding ! its too bad Jasuto never caught on as it was way ahead of its time in the music app world and can get incredibly complex and deep with modular design basically no manual though so you kinda have to just figure it out on your own.

hi jakob! i love ivoxel too, and i hope the developers give an update to the app. also, in ivoxel you can use any input as the carrier wave using audiobus in a weird way. inside audiobus, in one channel set first a synth (or any signal) as input and ivoxel as output, in another channel set the mic as input and ivoxel as output. then in ivoxel choose auidobus as wave and activate the mic, that's all! sometimes works weird, but it works!

Wow, that's awesome. It's crazy how there are many vocoder choices. My 5 are 1. Garageband's stock Vocoder (inbuilt) 2. Harmony Eight by Virsyn (AUv3) 3. Voloco (IAA - Free) 4. Audiotune by Audiokit (AUv3) 5. Voxsyn by Virsyn (AUv3) I di have voice synth but I never really vibed with it. But seriously, man, thanks for this. Given me an appreciation of so many apps. Edit: 27 mins in, and now I remember why I bought Voice Synth. It's incredibly powerful. I remember making a few presets but I also ran out of time to use the app as much as I'd like. Maybe I should get back to it. I also love your explanation on the principles of voice synthesis. Didn't know about that article so I'll check it out.

I like harmonisers too, but they’re not on the lists since they’re not pure vocoders. And personally I don’t like TunerFX at all. The overuse of “T-pain fx” ruined it for me completely. I’m so allergic to it that I won’t even use the auto-tuning settings in vocoders that have em. The only one I can handle is the VoxSyn vocoder/tuner one. It’s special and produces some really unique sounds.

Do I change the buffer ? What did you do ? It’s ridiculous that this has been going on this long ! It’s not happening on my 2015 iPad Pro though( Intel) this daw needs third party plugins ( I would like to install my erm plugin inside of gadget which works in most daws already but alas it not there yet! Global tuning to try songs in different keys and app support too.

It occurred to me at the end of this that I already owned one of these, had had it for nearly a year, and had never ever used it. Then it occurred to me, listening to you using it, that I probably never will because it clearly requires you to be tuneful. But that’s YT demos for you- buying stuff you’ll never use because someone showed you that THEY can... Anyway, great video, learned a lot, kept my fingers away from ‘buy it now’! Hej Jakob!

😅 . Tack för titten! 👊🏼

I just pulled out my V_2 card for my Roland V-synth and it's crazy fun! It has a key follow that reads your pitch and follows it which allows you to sing into it without playing any keys! The PO-37 is really one of the best to pull out choppy robot voice at low low tones but as you know it's only for pre-recorded. The best I remember trying was the Korg MS2000. That vocoder picked up your voice so clear when you simply whispered threw it! I hope Korg will make an IOS MS2000 with vocoder :) ASLO maybe we can start a petition for a new version of Figure? one that sends midi out too? or at least export it?

Fantastic Vocoder comparison! I love how you highlighted the unique elements of each one and why they might be more (or less) useful depending on the input + final output required.. you explained everything so clearly.. I totally understand what a vocoder is + does now because of your extreme efforts here.. a huge thank you for that.. What flavour do you like? Simple question but very difficult to answer.. This video helps us all in that decision process.. still not easy BUT e-a-s-i-e-r.. Really loved some of your examples.. great chords + voicings and the vocals fit perfectly.. very inspiring.. Are any of them on final tracks that we can purchase? Would love to hear them in the full context of a song.. absolutely lovely as they are too.. It seems like you've used vocoders for a while now.. you've clearly shown that here.. the best vocoder tutorial on the Tube + quite possibly the entire net.. that was an absolute pleasure to watch.. Bravo! + Thank you..

I’ve pretty much worked on it for 6 months and it’s going to take ... probably until winter holidays before get close to done. The hardest part about this one is writing lyrics. My “lyrics-kung-fu” is very weak. 😅👍🏼

Thank you Jacob! Oh you put your autism to good use, I'm on spectrum too but in a different less useful obsessive direction I think lol (mostly drooling over 80s synth patches). BTW thanks for introducing me to Voice Bot... when you did your comparisons that one jumped out at me (I'm a keyboardist and vocalist)... and was surprised it wasn't your top one. But I watched through and you confirmed my initial impression. VoiceSynth has never resonated with me much though I've owned it for a few years. Thanks for the video!

Good catch. Yes it’s kinda is. It’s not a pure Vovoder per see, but it does have a Vocoder effect option. Can’t remember which button it was though. Haven’t used it for 6 months. 😅

areality40 reason has really done a fine job of sinking their apps. Paid premium for them by iOS standards and were well worth it at the time. Disappointed they haven’t developed for them an abandoned them it seems. Does Figure work on your iPad? Mines stopped working.

@Mind altering fx What iPad model and version of iOS? All my devices are able to run Figure without any problems. I’ve got: iPad mini 1st gen - iOS 9 iPhone 5s - iOS 11 iPad mini 2 - iOS 13 iPhone 6 - iOS 13 iPad Pro 12.9” 1st gen - iOS 13 I have no issues other than the bevelled sides of the iPhone 6 being a nuisance. Touching the edges makes iOS thing I want to swipe away the app.

I’m looking to expand my hardware setup with another vocoder. Mininova has one and it’s interesting but I want dedicated boxes. I’ve been eyeing the VT-3 but it looks way too limited. Maybe the VT-4 would be something.

I'm italian, Then i must use subtitles for fast English, well all the vocoders start CC on KZbin but the 4th NEVER! Then this is a CONS. Faster starts KZbin CC better is vocoder. If YT says [music] The vocoder is a BAD vocoder :)

The auv3 limitation in DerVoco is no longer applicable after Cubasis 3.5 update. Right?. No you can route midi to an audio fx in a track.

This might be impossible to do... but... is there a way to use a vocoder in Nanostudio 2? (Thinking that NS2 can't deal with audio, it also can't deal with a vocoder? Sorry if this question is stupid, I am just getting started in music production on iPad as a hobby and have a lot to learn.

My favorite vocoder type programs are iVoxel and Harmony Voice but they've been out for over 10 years and they've never been made a plugin, which is both strange and bothersome. What is wrong with this company Virsyn that makes these apps??? These apps would be hugely successful if made into plugins!
