in another lifetime ago, whilst studying voice myself, I remember discussing these "alto" pieces by Handel. One of my instructors pointed out (quite correctly) that in this era, culture would not generally allow women to perform publically and that these pieces were almost always sung by countertenors, castrados and the like. It is quite refreshing to here this piece interpreted correctly with the correct voicing, as intended by the composer. Bravo Jakub. A wonderful performance!

Your instructor was partly misinformed. This "fact" about women not performing in public in the baroque period is only very partially true: they were forbidden from performing on the stage in parts of Italy over which the Pope had secular suzerainty, NOWHERE else. In England, women sang in public concerts and on stage ALL the time. This aria was originally written for an alto castrato, and then transposed up for a female soprano in for other performances that Handel himself directed. It was NEVER performed by a counter-tenor during the composer's lifetime, and the composer would have rightly expected proper trills, more variety of sound and real legato, all matters of basic singing technique which he would have taken for granted.

Your instructor was wrong. Handel in his time had the best female singers in Europe, like Faustina Bordoni or Francesca Cuzzoni, who were divas. Women already had a leading role and not everything was centered around the castrati. The alto arias of the Messiah were originally performed by the English alto Susannah Cibber (1714-1766)

What nonsense. I don't believe in any of the nonsense of imaginary beings in the sky, but I adore Handel's music, and fully understand that, as a a product of a non-rational age, Handel did believe it, and that it inspired some of his most sublime music (as Bach and many others.) Inspiration can come from deeply held sentiments from anywhere, love of man, woman, the beauty of nature, or a nonexistent god. One of the few positives of the evil of Christian religion is how much wonderful music, painting and sculpture it has stimulated!

I am moved to tears by Handel, which I have studied and sung all my long life. And I marvel at it all the more because I know that I have the extraordinarily luck and privilege of this unique, one-off, time-limited, never-to-be-repeated opportunity to appreciate the beauty of the world, of friendship, of love and the music (inter alia) of Handel. All the more valuable because life is brief, limited and unrepeatable! For one short magical moment in time, we live. Don't buy the child-like fairy tale. Embrace reality and you will live all the more intensely! Big hug!
