That's an "intrusive r" which is found primarily in "non-rhotic" accents (accents that usually drop their trailing rs.) Non rhoticity in America is clustered around Boston, New York City, Charleston, Savannah, and New Orleans. It's no more prevalent in the south than it is in the north. Kent has a rhotic accent, not a non-rhotic one. But perhaps some intrusive rs have made their way north and west from Louisiana...

I remember seeing this guy years ago on food network beat Bobby Flay with chicken fried steak. The authenticity of him making a perfect Chicken Fried Steak on the chuck wagon but struggling to understand how a regular oven worked still makes me laugh to this day when I think about it. I’m in Houston and grew jalapeño peppers in my back yard. We think that the absorbed plutonium because of the heat. I fixed the problem with a soaking in milk, sugar, and salt. 3 days later they went mellow and had a taste like Vidalia onions. We stuffed them with Galveston bay crab and East Texas Bayleaf (removed later) for Seasoning.

I like the recommendation for tater flakes - I always have some on hand for breading and for thickening soup or stew. Better flavor than flour, and never gets lumpy. Get the plain kind, with no flavoring.
