The Roxor is built in Detroit, MI, which is way more than you can say for many Jeep products today. The comments about the Mahindra being an "eBay CJ" or "knockoff" are hilarious and ignorant. Mahindra has been making Willys vehicles *under license* just 3 years after it was available to US civilians in 1945. Today they are a 15 billion $ company built mostly on the strength of one product, the Jeep CJ. So if Jeep is a legend, Mahindra is it's greatest living tribute. Go to India and see for yourself how these vehicles are used before passing judgment!

Jeeps have long been made in Toledo, Ohio, and most still are. That's where Willys-Overland was based, then American Motors took over... The Renegade is assembled in Italy, but the engine and transmission are made in the US.

Andrew Martin that's not the point I was making, but the Wrangler is the only Jeep product still built in Toledo (though not in the same plant as the original Willys). Renegade and Compass are both made outside the US and are Fiat platforms. The Grand Cherokee is a Mercedes platform but built in Detroit. The Cherokee probably has the most Jeep influence and built in Illinois, but it's still a part-Fiat. Meanwhile Mahindra has been building rugged body-on-frame SUVs and pickups true to the original Jeep heritage the entire time since the 50s, and a share of their profits have come back here to the US in licensing royalties. So this isn't some Chinese knockoff built to look like the real thing.

Ajay -- Why do you say that? Was anything I said not true? Other than I went off on a little tangent from SwiftX's original post, I didn't speak unkindly about Mahindra or the Roxor. I was thinking that there were two production lines in Toledo, the Wrangler and either the Compass or Cherokee, but I'm willing to admit when I'm wrong. My 2005 Jeep Liberty Renegade was built in Toledo... I now own a 2017 Renegade Trailhawk, and I really like the Roxor, but I can't justify owning one, especially since it's not street legal. If I owned a large ranch or farm, I might get one... BTW, my dad was an engineer with Chrysler for 20 years, and my great-uncle worked for both Chrysler and AMC -- I am fairly familiar with the company heritage.

I think that Willys only has tires and a rattle can paint job and honestly the original military ag style tires probably would have done better in the mud. Plus the Roxor starts at 20gs, I could do plenty of mods to a Willys (not to mention saving it from rusting into nothing) that would make it shit all over a Roxor for 20g's. Plus the argument could be made over the Roxor being brand new and the Willys has probably seen well over 150,000 hard miles.

@@danthedude89 - I'm a huge Jeep fan and like you, I hate seeing a grand old Willys rusting into nothing. Personally, I think this is a BS comparison anyways as 1948 Willys are pretty hard to come by these days. Also, the Roxor is starting at 15k (saw my 1st truck load of them today in fact) so spending a grand on tires, and a poor mans lift (new shackles, which is what we did to all of the CJ's back in the day and they worked just fine) would make this thing just perfect. That turbo diesel is a huge plus. As is, I can easily see these used on large farms and cattle ranches as well as safari vehicles.

You're driving a vehicle with a roll cage and seatbelts... but wearing helmets... then you're in a 70 year-old open-top Willys with lap-belts (maybe?) and no helmet.... Not the brightest bulbs in the box.

i know that where i live, if its an "off highway vehicle" be it a side by side or atv, legally you have to wear a hemet, whereas a road legal vehicle you do not.

My Odes Dominator 800 is street legal and less expensive, plus has 2wd hi/lo, 4wd hi/lo and 2wd diff lock and 4wd quad lock.

@@seananon4893 A bone stock CJ2A is far from being 'junk'. It actually would have done better with original stock issue 6.00 x 16 NDT tires or the upgrade 7.00 X16 that were available as original equipment.

Having owned over a dozen Jeeps since the mid 60’s (and loving them I still have one) including 3 flat fenders starting with a MB. One thing to take into consideration on the ramp test is the fact that on any pre 1976 CJ or flat fender with springs (as in width and length) at least half the flex is in the frame. The older the Jeep the more flex!

Ken MacMillan do you mean that both vehicles should have the Roxor tires or the stock tires that each came with? Because with matching ride height from the tires would help make for a fair comparison.

No, the Roxor should have its stock tires and the 2A should have whatever it came with in 1948. Probably old school military tires, Coker still makes them.

The Roxor's frame is boxed too...that takes a lot of flex out of it right there. The CJ is super flexible not only because of worn springs, but because of worn EVERYTHING! The frame and body has flexed an insane amount of times in 75 years, and everything has loosened up over the years. Guarantee the CJ was a shit ton stiffer when it was brand new, just like the Roxor.

It’s a shame you can’t use the roxor on the road. They should sell it as a “kit” where you just have to bolt a few parts on and slide around the crash test safety and vehicle standards a bit. It’s not like a Willy’s made today would ever pass either. I think they’d sell the hell out of them if they could be used on the road. It’s probably safer than most old Jeeps anyway with newer parts and working brakes.

Technically some states allow you to register them with some modifications, but they don't meet road emissions regulations so it's technically illegal.

If it there were a way to make it street legal, the Wrangler would suffer greatly. I liked wheeling in my TJ, since I traded it off, I have had no desire to fork over the cash for a newer Wrangler just to scrape through the brush and bury it in the mud. I would buy a kit just for a new open tub vehicle.

I have driven and own both the willys and the mahindra for more than 10 years. I have a lot of experience with both these vehicles and according to me the mahindra's engine, gearbox and suspension is better and more realiable than the willys. I use the mahindra to pull a trailer which can easily pull about 1200 kg... According to me considering the price , the mahindra is by far the best 4x4 vehicle available.

Because it is classified as a side by side off-road vehicle, the jeep came before anyone thought safety was important and is grandfathered in as far as not having to wear belts and helmets, I'd wear a helmet in that jeep before the fully caged Mahindra though.

The Roxor did well all things considered. The biggest advantage to it though I think is that it's brand new. That means no rusty tub, no hack job fixes, a solid frame, and a fresh engine. The thing with the Willy's is that even though it's been time proven, I'd hate to have to put my faith in rusty old shit that you never know what's going to happen. I'd hate to get out on the trail and have a water pump or god forbid an oil pump go out on a high mileage, high hour motor like that. Especially if you had to be by yourself. Overall though, I think that the Mahindra has a place in the market, especially considering it costs just as much as a new side x side anyways.

Salvegeable, yet worn or damaged, 'WW2 Jeeps' (Willys MB and Ford GPW 'Truck, 1/4 Ton, 4X4') were refurbished by the Ordnance Department and their contractors to be reissued or to be sold as 'surplus'. None of the 'rebuilt' war Jeeps were converted to or sold as CJ2A. www.ewillys.com/2019/02/12/jeep-reconditioning-programs/#more-119216 Only the very earliest of the civilian CJ2A Universal used body stampings and other parts that were 'still in the bin' from WW2 production. No CJ2A was ever produced during World War Two, though there had been some 'civvy' prototypes such as the original CJ2, Agri-Jeeps', and such. Good video except for the excessive use of "send it" and lack of driving experience. Slow isn't how you conquer mud especially with ATs. Also you don't need to start in 1st gear in low range. Either vehicle will start even on a hill in second gear low. Yah a comparison with equal size tires and one sway bar link removed would be an excellent follow up. Keep having fun and make more videos.....

I have a 1985 Mitsubishi J54, and other than getting parts for it, it is awesome. They are a right hand drive 2.7 Liter diesel Jeep CJ3b.

I am from India.. And here in India, Cars made by Mahindra are as Rugged and flexible as Jeep there in States. I've seen Mahindra's SUVs aging as 45 years old and they still do stuff like CJ2 or This Whillys Jeep... Mahindra has mastered the Science of making Rugged and Cheap SUVs over the years and now only makes SUV, Mini SUV, Crossover, Etc.. No Sedans or Hatch Back.. There are only 2 issues with all Mahindra cars.. 1. Under power 2. There is no reason that the Mahindra should not be street legal when the Willys is. I wish we lived in a world where people could do their own research and choose to drive what they want. The Roxor was getting high centered because of the smaller tires. I also would have disconnected the sway bar for better articulation. But great video otherwise.

It's a toy for people that don't know any different or for farmers thay want to tow a little with it around the farm. No where near practical as a wheeler. After needed upgrades, you'd be in it for 25-30k. For sticker proce, I could build a 1ton yj or TJ and have enough dough left to buy a single seater utv. Or look at it like a person that buys an Acura instead of just the Honda. Now they can say, look at me and how much I spent on a pointless nameplate.

Having seen some new ATV's in the similar class (such as side-by-sides) I can say it's priced pretty competitively against them, it's just that they're taking an Indian car and selling it as an ATV, so it isn't as "optimized" as say a Polaris side by side

Yeah and why are people still stuck on RTI ramp scores anyway? Come on people. RTI ramps have their uses, like observing suspension movement in a controlled environment, but to me they should have faded out in about 2003 when people realized that super flexy suspension got them no farther down the trail than normal leaf springs and locking diffs. I mean you saw how the ROXOR kept going with one wheel off the ground. The guy had to tell him to back up to take the measurement. Ramp scores don't always equate to real world wheelability.

I started to wonder why I still kept watching the video once I realized that it is just barely-old-enough-to-drive and totally inexperienced off-road drivers trying to compare those 4x4:s. It was starting to be almost painful until I tried to think them as my daughter and her bmw-friends. My son would do a lot better as he was trained to drive off road in the Finnish army. Anyway, thanks for the video , but please, try to find a dog collar that gives a 20000 volt shock if the one wearing it uses the words "send it"...

Mahindra started off building Jeeps under license in WW2 and they've been building them ever since. The elongated versions are used in rural India as people movers, where the roads that are worse than the tracks in this video, with very little maintenance or professional mechanics around. They are not fast vehicles but those things are built to take a beating.

Those are not the OEM tires on Willys. The vehicles are not really "like for like". The CJ has after market tires and not the standard OEM but a huge tire.

If they had used 6.00 X 16 NDT tires they would have sailed right through that mud. The side bite on them is incredible in sand or mud and they clear themselves rather than mudding up.

just so you realize, because someone else said the same thing and i just copied the response: David Tracy 7 months ago I mentioned the difference in tire size in the video, for the record. Second, everyone in this video is from the country-nobody from the city, not that it's remotely relevant. Third, three of the folks in the video have driven some of the country's hardest off-road trails in Moab. And two of us I'd consider highly experienced, having spent many years beating on Jeeps off-road (we even did it for a living). Should my friend have hammered the skinny pedal a bit more on the way out of that one mud hole? Maybe. But that didn't affect the outcome of the test, and I'd suggest you read the full comparison linked in the description for an in-depth analysis of how the two vehicles compare off-road.

Turning radius is actually pretty bad on flatfender Jeeps due to the closed-knuckle front axles. That's one area the YJ would have it beat.

I think if you took the Mahindra and took two of the next to the longest Leafs out of the leaf springs and had them arched you would have the ground clearance you need and it would be softer and you would get more articulation

Kids these days. With their air/ electric lockers controlled by a phone app, power steering n brakes.... Bought my first CJ5, in 1979. Brand new on the lot, no top no backseat no power nuthin ! 258ci w/ T-18 granny 1st gear. Had the Jeep dealership mount a Warn winch... Swapped in some Dana 44's with Detroit lockers, 5.38 gears and 33" Monster Mudders w/ a 2" lift n some body trimming... I love that Jeep n still have it !

Those Roxors have a governor on them, they top out stock at 45 mph. With tuning, the Roxor easily does 75 mph and has a 30% hp gain. A tuned Roxor will crush the old willy's.

Yeah and the jeep is like 70 years old and still was better. If I rebuild that engine on the Willys, new diffs and gearbox, it will destroy the Mahindra offroad. And still have a road legal vehicle. Willys go up in value, nobody gives a toss about Mahindras. And these guys should be punched for ruining a go devil engine.

Novel -- Assembled here. Ironic to me, anyway, that the Roxor is probably safer on-road than the CJ-3, due to its improved suspension. If they could disconnect the sway bar, it would have done much better on the ramp test, but it also has a much stiffer frame (that CJ was flexing big time)...

What do you expect with street tires and open diff's. Put some decent tires on both vehicles and lock up the differentials and you'd see a world of difference for both vehicles. Also, gear ratios are a whole different world. I think it's a really good thing that the Mahindra is being manufactured. It's really nice to see that you can buy a bare bones "Jeep" without all the plastic crap and build it from there. I think there's a whole lot of potential for the Mahindra. I own a '47 CJ2A Willys and with the upgrades that have been done to it, in my opinion, there's nothing finer BUT the potential with the Mahindra..... I think there's a lot of future fun and performance to be had. For Sure!

I've saw the Mahindra Roxor while driving my my local Offroad dealership. I haven't saw one up close and personal, So i decided to watch some videos about it. It's no slouch but nothing spectacular from what i've seen on the videos. I presently own a 1956 Willys CJ5, A 1954 Willys M38A1 Military Jeep, and a 1991 Jeep Wrangler YJ. I've also owned quite afew 70s/80 model CJ's aswell. From opinion and experience there's not many places where the Willys jeep won't go. They're my all time favorite off road vehicle.

Most impressive element of the test: A woman who listens to directions and complies. Near the end, in the mud, in the Mahindra, the young lady listens and performs exactly as instructed, without uttering a word. This old fellow just fell in love. Whomever can claim her, or more correctly, whomever she has chosen, you are a fortunate man indeed. Don't ever abuse your relationship with her since you won't find another. A great young lady, quietly in the background. It gives me some hope for the future. But who is she?
