Fresno had it's own style of poppin' back then, like 1983 & 1984, and it was just downright contagious. When this song came on, you couldn't help yourself, you just had to get out there and show your moves, and when you were broke, young, and had absolutely nothing to offer girls, your dance moves became the one thing you could offer them, and it was enough to get you attention for a short time. We were broke back then in a way that is unfathomable today, but we had music--we could at least record off the radio, or maybe pass mix tapes around--and the music would flow throw you like electricity and take you away from the misery that was daily life of being poor in Fresno. When you went to a dance at a community center and saw a breakin' or poppin' contest, you felt like you'd seen something that was special, something that everybody should've been so lucky to see, and you went home and to school and talked about it like you saw a rocket blast off to space in person. The excitement, the thrill that it gave a 13 year old boy can't be understated, and this song brings it all back for me. I want to jump out of my seat and start hittin' some moves like my own from back then, but I just can't...remember...how I did it. If I look in the mirror and try it now, I see that I've lost it completely. Getting old sucks, enjoy life while you can. We were welfare-and-food-stamp poor, but the music and the poppin' gave me happiness right down to my soul, and I can just sort of remember it when this song comes on, just a bit, just for a few minutes.
