A live, semi-improvised performance, all on hardware, and inspired by the pleasures of tape. Most of the sounds here have tape-like effects applied to them, and for much of the song, I'm "playing" the tape on the Zen Delay by Erica Synths (with Ninja Tune collaborating). The Zen Delay is a real joy to perform with.
I'm also nicely surprised by the Korg NTS-1. It was a fun project to build, and while it's only a single-oscillator synth, you can get a variety of sound out of it (including a sub oscillator), and it has a ton of good options like filter sweep, and also a great collection of effects. Quite a lot of bang for your buck!
Novation Launchpad Pro MkIII - Sequencing, mutes, scenes
Korg NTS-1 + Empress Effects Zoia - Melody
Dreadbox Abyss + Empress Effects Reverb + Strymon Ola + Meris Ottobit Jr. - Pad
Moog Minitaur + Meris Polymoon - Bass
Roland SH-01a + Strymon Deco + Erica Synths (with Ninja Tune) Zen Delay - Melody 2 and arp and delay weirdness
Written and performed within a 24-hour period, and uploaded as is, with only a little compression/limiting on the master.

I don’t know how much longer I can go without adding a Minitaur to my collection. Out of all the great equipment used in this jam, I think the humble little Minitaur stole the show here. That bassline just ties everything together like glue. Really enjoyed this one, thanks!

Interesting comment with respect to the Ola / Ottobit Jr. and attempting to have a Generation Loss in stereo. Do you think the combo is successful? I like the Ottobit Jr., but don't know much about the Ola. I'll check it out.

Lovely stuff! Launchpad looks a cool way to run things, can it do any performance type tricks on the fly?
@JayHosking
@JayHosking 4 жыл бұрын
Not so much, sadly. You can use it to randomly sequence, or “mutate” (smart transpose) notes with some probability, but my favourite on-the-fly stuff remains the OP-Z and Arturia sequencers. Still, as far as workflow goes, I’m really gelling with the LPP Mk3.

Here, it's adding the stereo feeling of the delay, plus adding the slow phaser. Adds a lot of stereo width to the original signal. And thanks!

I really like Erica Synths! Tube so often seems like a gimick, but they most certainly have made geniune good use of them! (the Zen has no tube, right?) The Minitaur really does prove itself pretty much the best bass synth, though I havnt checked out the Hades. I did own an AS-1 for a month, I loved it for bass, if you are after a bit more versatility then the 'Taur, for example, variable waveforms, triangle sub, a great filter boost.

How would you honestly compare the delay effects in the NTS-1 vs zen delay? ☺️
@JayHosking
@JayHosking Жыл бұрын
The NTS-1 is amazingly affordable and does a lot of things well, but I don't like its interface and having no memory means you're resetting it from scratch everytime you turn it on. The Zen Delay just works and sounds incredible, has a fantastic front panel, and is a joy to add to a setup.
@chris.dillon
@chris.dillon 4 жыл бұрын
Great! Yeah. Zen Delay is magic. I also want a stereo generation loss. I've been using the Magento and Analog Heat as a summer. Pretty good. You have a Sub37? Isn't that in the same role as a minitaur bass?
@JayHosking
@JayHosking 4 жыл бұрын
I think the Minitaur still sounds better on bass than the SS37, remarkably, though I love the SS37 for lots. And thanks!

@@JayHosking awesome, it has that feel. And Novation allows you to play in 3/4? I have Digitakt and trying to figure out how to go beyond 4/4, having difficulty getting there.
@JayHosking
@JayHosking 4 жыл бұрын
@@davidavanesian1070 Yeah, any sequencer that will let you set the number of steps can do it. Just set the Digitakt to a division of 3 (e.g. 48 steps total, or 4 16th notes x 3 beats per bar x 4 bars). That's basically what I've done with the LPP MkIII here. Best of luck!

How do you think the NTS-1 compare quality wise to the pedals?
@JayHosking
@JayHosking Жыл бұрын
The NTS-1 is a fun thing to tinker on, and can legitimately make some great sounds, but it feels not so good (including the knobs) and it resets every time it's unplugged, meaning you start from scratch with each power up. Ultimately that doesn't work for me.

@@JayHosking Can I ask (since I believe you have both): how does it compare to the Moog Sirin? I've heard the Sirin can reach higher notes. But maybe it's to the detriment of its low end. Any thoughts?
@JayHosking
@JayHosking 4 жыл бұрын
Honestly, the difference is not that big. The Sirin has that extra range, which makes it a handy workhorse, but the Sirin also starts at a slightly higher frequency than the Minitaur, so it can’t quite reproduce that bass.
