Jamala fled her homeland because of the war in Ukraine. Just days later, she sings her ESC-winning song "1944" in the German preliminary round.
Lyrics:
When strangers are coming...
They come to your house,
They kill you all
and say,
We’re not guilty
not guilty.
Where is your mind?
Humanity cries.
You think you are gods.
But everyone dies.
Don't swallow my soul.
Our souls
Yaşlığıma toyalmadım
Men bu yerde yaşalmadım
Yaşlığıma toyalmadım
Men bu yerde yaşalmadım
We could build a future
Where people are free
to live and love.
The happiest time.
Where is your heart?
Humanity rise.
You think you are gods
But everyone dies.
Don't swallow my soul.
Our souls.
Yaşlığıma toyalmadım
Men bu yerde yaşalmadım
Yaşlığıma toyalmadım
Men bu yerde yaşalmadım

I am a Crimean Tatar. and this is the story of my people, the pain and torment that we still experience for ourselves. I will tell you one of the many stories that my grandmother told me, who was deported from her native Crimea on May 18, 1944. She was 8 years old at the time: on May 18, 1944, Russian soldiers burst through the door. they shouted that the Crimean Tatars would be deported to Central Asia for alleged betrayal. (grandma then lived only with her mom. her father, as well as 8 of her uncles, died in the war against the Nazis back in 1942.) her grandfather, who could no longer walk normally, was also sitting in a small house. The little girl was grabbed by the collar and dragged to the train station while her mother quickly packed her things. Her dog ran after her, barking at the Russian soldier who treated the child so rudely. With one sharp movement, without hesitation, he pulled out a gun and killed the dog. the grandmother was put into a freight car of the train, she was crying, because she could not find her mother in any way. they rode the train for several weeks. almost 40% of the Crimean Tatars then died on trains, as they had no food, no water, no conditions. first, the elderly began to die, then pregnant women. A few months later, my grandmother was found by her mother. later, when she turned about 25 years old, she told her that my grandmother's grandfather could not walk to the train. he was shot in his own bed hold on Ukrainians. I am with you, all Crimean Tatars are with you now. we are also fighting and defending our homeland, Ukraine!

She told the story about the Turks = the Crimean Tatar Turks in 1944 and also what they were going through just as hər Grandmother. The song and its lyrics killed every Turk... That's why we voted for her. That's why it touched our hearts... That's why we have cried to this song, while everybody else hated it and expected something gayish to win... That's why I had goosebumps and cried to a song for the first time ever in my life and the ending gave me the rest... 💔💔💔😢😢😢😭😭😭

@@s.0211 My family their origins are from East Turkestan over centuries ago they moved to our nowadays home at Denizli. We speak very old Turkish in the family and in the village. A normal Turk wouldn't definately not understand our language, but Tatar, Azerbaijani, Uyghur and even Turkmen can understand our language and so do I except Turkmeni. We are Yörüks and you are right. Whilst we also say "Yaş almadım" which is the same meaning "I didn't age" or for the older folks "Gocalmadım" which is hard to translate into English, because actually there it is meant the same but "goca" means "big" or even "husband' whilst no modern Turkish speakers use this. We also say to "I am going" "Gidivatarım" which ending is from Uyghur Turkish. The ending "-vataram" is used in Uyghur Turkish. Another example "Yemek edivatırım" which is "I am cooking". So it's our Turkish -ing form :) I understand every word like a Tatar even I am not a Tatar :) Our Turkish is a Mix between Azerbaijani Turkish, Tatar and Usbek Turkish and even very old words that doesn't use any Turkic language afaik. But there is a word, which our brothers from Azerbaijan would definately understand, but our Turks probably not that much it's "meciman" :) So proud of being a Turk and a Part of the biggest family ❤️❤️❤️ Gadaşlarım hepinğiz sağlık ve selametle galınğ.

In 2016, many people didn't understand this song. It was hard to listen to because of its historical and political overtones, and not like most Eurovision songs easy, light, simple and pleasant just in time for radio. Now that there is a war going on in Ukraine, many of these people have only just begun to understand its message, having seen what is happening in Kiev and other Ukrainian cities.

As soon as I heard about the Russian attack I started singing this song. When she performed it in 2016, it brought tears to my eyes. The scream is so primal, it the frustration and agony of tyranny and power seekers with no consider of people or humanity. This is a universal song of human anguish. Wow, her performance of this is even more beautiful than the first one she did on Eurovision in 2016. Her voice has had very subtle improvements in tonality, pitching, and intensity, But such minor nuances create a much more powerful performance. The emotion is more raw in this. The pain, assertion and anguish. Especially given how she is singing something very current and close to home, and the tears in her eyes while she’s still hitting every note without breaking her vocals. Wow. It is so beautiful, I definitely felt her eyes and voice touch my soul with this tragically poignant song.

@@phiabee7064 yes I fear eurovision will claim it to be too political, but I think it would be amazing. very powerful.

She endured the entire song with tears in his eyes and his broken voice. 1944 spoke of the past and the future 💔 Thank you Jamala, my admiration for you, we are with you ukrainian brothers. #PrayForUkraine 🇺🇦🤍

@@theGoldjey Exactly. It adds to the tragic dimension… she was a Kassandra figure in 2016, but nobody listened. Now she’s back, as a refugee as bombs rain down on her country, and her lament is infinitely more poignant.
