Aardman Studios has an odd legacy. The studio went from a cel-animated short film about a British superhero name "Aardman" to creating Wallace and Gromit, Chicken Run, and other stop motion projects (excluding Flush Away since it's CGI) that are made with passion and effort. Look how far they've come now, at least they keep stop motion alive from being obscured out of the mainstream.
@kauske
@kauske 10 ай бұрын
Wasn't the choice to make it CG partly because of Aardman's then recent fire? For what it's worth, they did a fairly good job of recreating the feel of stop motion for the time; not as good as the lego movie, but still pretty good for 2006. I've also heard that they were considering going partly for CG in the first place, since real water would damage the models, so they were going to render the water and other effects, and layer it ontop. Given they're making a sequel and sticking to the CG medium, I have to wonder how well it will replicate real plasticine models with our current tech.

I really like how in Arthur Christmas you think Steve is going become a twist villain because he wants to take the role of Santa forcefully and then he isn't that. He's just a regular person who goes through a character arc and realises that he's not worthy of becoming Santa.

Matt Groening has a hilarious ancedote about that. Apparently he was talking to them, and they were praising Katzenburg and saying how good he was to work with, then someone came in saying he was on the phone, and they immediately were like "tell him were not in". Everyone hates working with Katz. All the Disney folk, all the Aardman.

@@ThePsycoDolphin and especially Robin Williams, Katzenberg screwed him over big time when it came to voicing Genie in Aladdin. Williams agreed to take a pay cut to voice Genie with the condition being he would be in none of the promotions and not become the major selling point, plus would not have his character used in promotions he didn’t agree with on an ethical level like for McDonalds toys and the like. Katzenberg agreed to it but then backstabbed Williams by making him voicing Genie be the biggest part of the advertising then made Genie merch for fast food and the like. Katzenberg burnt him so badly that Williams only agreed to do Aladdin And The Prince Of Thieves (a movie that came out after Katzenberg left) if he got a formal apology from Disney and was allowed to star in some educational videos starring Genie, Williams even missed out on the role of Shrek because he refused to work with Katzenberg ever again

Even the "Worst" Aardman Movies I still Enjoy...Aardman has a massive place in my Heart, that place was created by my Grandmother who passed away 5 Years *and 5 Days* ago...She recorded Wallace & Gromit: A Grand Day Out when it aired in 1989 on VHS and every else since, I watched Aardman so early in Life, I was born 2 months before Chicken Run was released in my Country and I have been a fan since!!! *I didn't watch Chicken Run when it came out, as I said 2 Months Old* My Grandmother passed her great piece of Entertainment down the Generations of my family!!! And when I become a Mother, I will continue this trend!!!

Wallace & Gromit Curse of the Were-Rabbit has to be my favorite one of the films, with Chicken Run being a close second. I gave Curse of the Were-Rabbit my top pick because I watched Wallace and Gromit's journey across multiple shorts beforehand. I feel like I forged a greater connection with the inventer duo than I did with Rocky, Ginger, and the other chickens. I loved that the bond between Wallace and Gromit is the emotional core of the film, and that Gromit really shines as a character.

I think my favorite has to be Pirates, it's just so damned memorable, followed by Chicken run. Were rabbit was a -tad- weak for me, but only when compared to the short Wallace & Gromit films. I think maybe it feels a bit stretched? Like it could have been a short film, but they padded it out to be feature length, so it feels a tad slow next to the shorts.

Chicken Run has to be my favorite because 1) it's the only high-quality heroine-driven movie Dreamworks has made to date, and 2) Ginger is among the top five smartest, most resourceful female characters in all of Western animation. Growing up in the 70s and early 80s, I saw so many animated movies in which female characters came in three basic types: 1) dull, 2) evil, or 3) not there at all. So Ginger means a lot to me. She's just the kind of heroine I would love to see more of in Western animated movies. However, I can totally see why Arthur Christmas might be preferred. Arthur is an adorable protagonist, to be sure, and it's the most gorgeous-looking movie Aardman has made, with its brilliant North Pole world-building. It's a close-to-perfect holiday movie. My one nitpick is that I think Grand-Santa gets away with a little too much, with his flaws handwaved away with the excuse "well, he's just old"; his knee-jerk cruelty to Bryony, for one thing, made him a lot more annoying than lovable, for me anyway, and it disappoints me that Arthur, kind--hearted as empathetic as he is, doesn't stand up for her. And that throwaway line about "women learning to read" just... doesn't land with me. I don't see why it even needed to be in the movie at all. Still, it's a delightful movie, and it would be my #2 pick.

My only problem with The Pirates! is the... there's no other way to say it... ridiculously UNimaginative name of its main character! "Pirate Captain"?! Really?! You're telling me the people responsible for such a wealth of brilliant humor couldn't come up with anything other than naming him his profession?! That'd be like calling Wallace & Gromit "Inventor" and "Dog"!!
@ThatGirlWithTheCards
@ThatGirlWithTheCards 7 ай бұрын
Whilst naming a character Pirate Captain can seem rather unimaginative to some (I was ok with it, would have been nice to have some actual names though), the Pirates movie was an adaptation of the Pirates! book series so it wasn't Aardman who named him Pirate Captain but the author, Gideon Defoe.

Just curious, you said there were only 8 Aardman films - wondering why you didn't include or even mention: A Grand Day Out, The Wrong Trousers, A Close Shave, or A Matter of Loaf and Death?

I have to thank my old school English book for telling me that Bristol exists and is actually cool (haven’t been there since I was a kid, maybe it sucks for adults or even kids now, feel free to let me know, Tommy’s). Anyway because of the book I got my dad to take me to Bristol when we first visited GB. Visiting the Aardman studios was really cool and my first introduction to actual filmmaking (up to that point I believed people moved the dolls and the hands where computer edited out). This and the Irish cartoon about the farm animals ( no idea what the English name is) were some of my favorite kids shows and movies and cemented my love for the British quirkiness (them also hating the French also really helps).

The only reason I hate the farmageddon movie is because it just doesn’t feel like Shaun the sheep and when I would try to watch morph (the claymation version) I would just see alot of stuff about this random alien creature

I will give you a fun fact about flushed away there are two actors I do recognize that is Ian McKellen and Andy serkis these two actors were from The Lord of the rings/Hobbit movies Andy serkis has the same one that played gollum AKA smeagol and he actually did the motion-capture for him and Ian McKellen is the same actor who played gandalf and all six of the Middle Earth Lord of the rings/Hobbit movies just wanted to give you a little bit of a fact about that.

Early Man was one of my biggest disappointments as a kid. I saw the trailer and expected a big, slapstick battle between the Bronze and the Stone. Then when I went to see it and realised it was a football film... yeah. I still liked it, but man I wish we got what I was expecting.

And it was made by Nick Park. The same guy who wrote and directed Chicken Run. Talk about how the mighty have fallen. I still respect the guy but I think he could've made a much better film
