I don’t think Kai is that bad as of a villain. He manages to be intimidating even with the funny moments he gets, and I consider that he has some of the best fight scenes in the series. Plus, I think people miss the point thinking that he’s supposed to be redeemable. His backstory is supposed to show his lust for power and pettiness, not make you sympathize with him.

yeah, especially when Jack Horner is so great because "he's just meant to be irredeemable and he doesn't have a sob story". Not saying Jack is bad because he isn't. But if Jack is great for being irredeemable, then Kai can't be bad for being irredeemable

I think what really kills Kai as a villain for a lot of people is that his connection with Oogway isn't as interesting as Shen and Po or even Tai Lung and Shifu. Po and Shen are literally shown to be two sides of the same coin in how they handle their pasts and grief, and Tai Lung and Shifu in how they deeply affected each other, with Shifu becoming much colder due to Tai Lung's rampage and eventually finding peace in teaching Po to be the true dragon warrior, and Tai Lung being set up so hard for disappointment unintentionally by Shifu that it fucked his whole world up. Oogway and Kai just don't really have anything close to that for a lot of people.
@lprxmisel8596
@lprxmisel8596 Жыл бұрын
@@thatguysinthecornertooelec3700 I can see that, other than the fact that oogway isn’t present for most the movie. For po and Shen they both battle it out and are have fates colliding. Tai king and shift were both alive and had contact with each other in a key part of the movie but Kai and oogway had it different. Kai isn’t known like shen or tai were and when Kai was a threat, it was where oogway couldn’t be so they couldn’t have that rivalry

Glad that my two favorite DreamWorks villains (Death and Lord Shen) both got in the top five. For my own notes on them: Death is fun because he's not a villain in the traditional sense, but more a manifestation of Puss' fear for his last life. When he finally faces Death is the point that Puss proves that he's willing to face his mortality instead of running from it. If you think about it, Death kind of wins because the old, "gambles with his life" Puss is effectively "dead" and replaced by a new, better version of himself. "But that man's long gone now" is a very fitting line. As for Shen, what most fascinates me about him is his parallels with Po, especially at the end. Po finally defeats Shen when he moves on from the past and obtains inner peace. Unlike a lot of villains, in his final moments Shen doesn't scream out in terror or try to move out of the way as his cannon comes down on him... If anything, Shen actually looks calm in his last moments. In a way, death is the thing that finally brings Shen his own inner peace. Also I just realized that both of my favorite DreamWorks villains have Death as their major theme (heck, white is the color of death in Chinese culture, which is why Shen being albino is so important to his theming)

I actually felt for Ramses, sure he’s not innocent, but losing your son to a deadly spirit (even though I have no kids) is a depressing thought and I almost cried along with him. How is Kai a worse villain than Captain Shmeck. Kai was criminally low considering his incredible design, amazing voice acting by JK simons and how he perfectly mirriors the way po achieves his mastery of chi with kia taking it and po being given it by those he inspired. Pair that with an incredibly unique fighting style astetic and one of the greatest villain musical themes of all time I feel like you have a pretty great villian in my opinion. I do agree his back story is a bit weak as it is implied that Ogway was the one who had the change of heart not Kai but its really vage and quite generic making him easily the weakest in the trillogy but half the charters on the list have a way worse back story or no back story at all. One thing about Kai I’ve heard people theorize that makes a lot of sense is that when him and Oogway were comrades they were actually warlords and conquerors together. In the panda village Oogway had a change of heart by learning to give instead of take and that’s why Kai felt betrayed. This makes so much sense and makes his connection to Oogway more interesting, really wish they emphasized this in the movie.

I understand why he's jealous of the guardians, i even feel a bit sad for him. No one can see him, it's like he doesn't exist that's awful! I also find it funny that his dreams are butterflies. His nightmares are also a play on words, though the play on words only works in English, I suppose. I don't really like his attire - I think it looks bland and doesn't express any of his personality and also isn't all that practical, but I love the design of his nightmares. They're superior to the dream unicorns to me. I find it a bit sad that his dreams are butterflies. One reading might be that he is fragile, and also, butterflies can sometimes be associated with death and other things. The other could be in relation to the book canon - which, tbf the movie doesn't really fit with - in which he has a daughter that becomes Mother Nature. He's also very a force of nature - since he represents fear -, so he's really just doing his job. Maybe not as well as he could do, but then, unlike Jack he didn't even get guidance from the moon, it seems. Then again, even Jack's guidance from the moon was limited. He's definitely a jerk, but one I can't help but pity.

So HTTYD is my favorite film series ever and watching this just made me realize something. The Red Death is actually a very good parallel to Stoik (who is kind of a villain himself up until that final battle). Stoik is the leader of the vikings, and though he does seem to care for them and their safety, he is also quite ruthless and puts his own reputation as a strong leader and dragon slayer above his own family. He even goes as far as to disown Hiccup when he reveals he is trying to protect the dragons rather than kill them. I believe that when confronted with the Red Death, Stoik is confronted by his own ruthlessness and poor parenting. Like the Red Death, Stoik has not cared enough for those closest to him. It might be a stretch but you could argue that there is a parallel between how the Red Death consumes other dragons, and how Stoik attempts to consume Hiccup with his ideologies and expectations, wanting to make Hiccup more a part of him than allowing him to become his own person. And this is why after the Red Death is defeated, Stoik becomes a much gentler character and better father.

I'm glad that I'm not the only one who felt like Humpty wasn't sympathetic, even as a kid it rubbed the wrong way how the movie basically ignored just how much of a toxic friend he was to Puss, it's just a unintentionally bad message that could've been executed better I do think there could've been 2 ways to make it better. Either 1. Have it where Humpty doesn’t get redeemed. After the final fight Humpty gets arrested and pleads with Puss to let him go, but Puss has realised that Humpty was a toxic friend who was just using him, so he cuts him out of his life for good Or 2. Have it where Humpty generally wants to generally fix his mistakes and wants to be friends with Puss again, but Jack and Jill keep pressuring him go through with the plan. Have it where he's generally remorseful for lying to Puss and you could even have it where after they give the golden eggs to the town, Humpty tries to bring the goose back to its mom, but Jack and Jill betray him and try to steal the goose for themselves Either one you prefer I really hate how they just ignore the fact the Humpty is a terrible person who doesn't get any consequences for his selfishness

36:04 Gladys is very much Titan before Titan. A cartoony caricature at the time that only became more accurate to reality as the years went on. In addition, the speed at which she was able to go from a whiny Karen to an unhinged psycho feels very much in line with real Karens. This just begs the question, did the people at Dreamworks predict the future? 🧐 From kicking Heather down the stairs, to hoping that the animals are taken out as inhumanely as possible while violently shoving her hand in front of Verne’s cage, as well as aggressively pulling and pushing Dwayne around demanding that he kills the animals, to using a weed hacker to try and kill the animals while screeching her death threats at the animals, to even resisting arrest and beating up the cops, it just goes to show how mentally unwell Gladys really is underneath her wealthy exterior. Unfortunately, this type of behavior wouldn’t be too out of the question for real Karens to do.

Knock off the use of the name "Karen" as a description! It's an ACTUAL name that you're using as a negative slang/slur, and it's quite rude to any person with the name. What would a poor kid think if you decided to use their name as an insult? It's insulting/hurtful to people with the name or know someone named Karen whose been a positive influence in their life. The trend of using peoples' names as insults is absolutely ridiculous! Names have more meanings than a dumb fad you know!

My Favorite has to be Death. Death has been the only character in years to be able to actually scare me. Every single time he showed up with that cold hollow whistle put me on edge and I felt like Puss. Every moment was done masterfully and the final battle with him was so cinematic there is a reason when the movie came out he took the internet by storm. I wasn't expecting to go into Puss in Boots The Last Wish (Especially considering the first one) and come out feeling like I just went on a real journey. Every Moment of the movie was 10/10 for me but Death elevated it to above 10/10 somehow in every scene he was in. The small details like he wasn't lying about being there during the giant scene and him slightly scratching the table when Puss says he laughs in the face of Death really showed the effort. From the very first sound of the whistle to walking away with the respect of Puss he had all of my respect as an absolute basically perfect villain for Puss. I agree with everything else though I think I would just move Death to 1. and then that would just put 1-3 down 1 but either way love the list!

22:39 This character reminds me of one story I heard that explained the backstory that led to the beast (of Beauty and the Beast) to get cursed. He was cursed by the fairy who raised him when his father was dead and his mother was on the battlefield of a war. Once the war concluded and the prince was a young man, the fairy thought she had earned the love of the prince in a romantic and/or sexual way. When he and his mom refuse for obvious reasons, the fairy gets angry and believes that she is only being rejected because of her looks as she is old and ugly; leading her to curse the prince with equal ugliness. However, it is made very clear that the rejection was because of large age differences, power differences (as one raised the other), and the entitlement of the fairy.

I don't feel bad for Lord Shen for what he did, but Tai Lung I get so worked up for that I honestly think he should've been given at least some sort of peace. Cortes really resonates with me because objectively tho he only appears at the beginning and end of the film, it’s enough to show how terrifying he was even in a short span of time. Dreamworks Cortes is not that much different from the real life one. And coming from a family from southern Mexico I can see (and anyone can see with this movie) how modern day Mexico (and all of the countries of the Americas) came about. Tzekel Kan is a great villain but Cortes is an even better one, especially when you know the context of the real life Cortes. Dreamworks did good making him such a constrast compared to the rest of fun loving characters and colorful setting.

I’m actually SHOCKED that you ranked Drago ABOVE Grimmel. Literally NOBODY ELSE does. Interesting take my guy!
@tylregor5481
@tylregor5481 Жыл бұрын
And in fact to me it's a right ranking tbh. Drago is fair more menacing and meaningfull as villain/antagonist who opposes the protagonist. Drago was for Hiccup the definite proof that not everyone can change idea trough reason and being "saved", that some of the people out here are only hopeless and unforgivable villains that have to be stopped in some way. A lot of people prefer Grimmel because he's that "elegant, stylish, composed, clever and manipulative" type of villain that it's fairly easy to like, but sadly he lacks Drago depth
@matthewbibby8921
@matthewbibby8921 Жыл бұрын
And I’m SO glad somebody did - because Drago, throughout the second movie, not only does a great job of challenging Hiccup’s beliefs, he’s also fucking intimidating and threatening whenever he’s on screen. He literally has the upper hand the entire time until the very climax of the movie. Grimmel is absolutely awful in comparison. The guy lets them get away at the beginning, which MIGHT be a power play… Except he then immediately loses them with like, zero way of actually getting them back. Even the whole Light Fury plot went nowhere (All it did was pull Toothless off to the hidden world which does absolutely NOTHING for his Agenda? He doesn’t track the Light Fury or… Anything?) and literally the ONLY reason he actually catches them in the end is because one of the characters is just so fucking dumb that they lead him straight to them again. All I could think by the end of the movie was “Really? Drago didn’t get between you and Toothless but THIS GUY did???”

I cannot get over Kai’s rank. It’s laughable to see him that low. The guy was a warlord who fought by Oogway’s side and when Oogway was injured, Kai sought out anyone who could heal his brother. What does he find? A village of panda’s to not inly heal his brother, but teach him and Oogway Chi. That is where the divide happens. After a near death experience, Oogway learns the value of life and after he is healed, is taught to give Chi but Kai, a warlord, is taught a power he could use to crush his enemies, perverting a spiritual method used to heal others. That is why Oogway battled Kai, to stop him from becoming a monster. People who have near death experiences tend to change their ways which is why when Oogway decided to give to others and aid them, he became loved and respected even after death but what happened to Kai; he tried to conquer and was eventually forgotten. Yes Shen is the best Kung Fu Panda villain, but I think Kai gets way too much hate. But I get it, opinions and all that. Personally, I would place Kai in the top 15.

Here's how you fix Kai. Make it so Oogway was the one that got corrupted by the power of Chi and Kai fought him to stop him. Oogway only becoming the wise kind master he is, after Kai's banishment and realizing that his thirst for power cost him the person he cared the most about (you know kinda like Dumbledore/Iroh). And Oogway then buried that part of his story in shame. So Kai is now bitter that his friend is worshipped as a hero, and he the true hero of their story got forgotten. This would also put the team in an interesting position in having to choose between fixing the mistakes of Oogway's past or defending and upholding his current legacy. It could also tie into the whole "what kind of master you want to be?" question Po is called to answer in the movie.

A few observations although for the most part I agree! - Death has one major problem in my eyes. Puss says "I can't defeat you" but he also absolutely trounces him in a fight at the end. - Tai Lung is my favourite of the KFP villains. He does something Shen does too, only I feel he does it better. He feels remorse. Although I personally feel like Tai's is more justified than Shen's. - Pitch is a character I wish I could perform as, acting wise. While he does act all pantomime villain-y to the other Guardians, his nature to Jack is surprising heartfelt. He only decides to stab Jack in the back when he finally realises he can't get through to him. - Kai may be the weakest KFP villain, but he's far from an actual weak villain as a whole. His powers are unique, his look and sound are powerful, and he has easily my favourite fight choreography in the series.

For the death thing I think they mean that he can’t like fully defeat him like get rid of him (Like for example they defeated the fairy godmother in Shrek 2 and killing her but he only won over death in that one battle yet he’s still out and about) I kinda view this as moments where people have near death experiences but manage to survive them barely. I feel like that moment is ment to represent something like that and when puss says “I know I can’t defeat you” cause he can never really defeat death cause eventually death will still come for him

Just cuz you beat death once doesn’t mean you’re going to always win. Death pretty much is going to win for sure in a battle of attrition. I don’t think a single success guarantees anything, or gets rid of any threat. It’s like telling a former cancer patient they no longer have to fear death, just cus they got rid of their cancer. Puss got in a few hits, whereas the wolf got way more in there, and was self admittedly playing with his food. He’s the only villain that remained a threat permanently. Unlike other villains, like Tai Lung, when they were lost it was fully over. Death was a personal obstacle, and remained one.

I think it goes too far to call Ramses’ and Moses’ father abusive. Seti seemed to be a good father, though much harder of Ramses than Moses. He was kind, forgiving, accepted Moses and loved him and gave him responsibility, and was understandably angry when his sons’ teenage silliness endangered the common man on the street. Which is what gave the reveal of his genocidal actions so much horror and weight. Seti was not an evil man in nature, but was evil in action, much like Ramses himself. Both are very human, personable and even charismatic people. You see why Ramses wants to be like him and why Moses was so destroyed by his father’s dismissal of what had been done to the Hebrews under his orders. Both Seti and Ramses call the Hebrews ‘only slaves’, an attitude Moses himself shares initially as well - but while Moses, after learning of his Hebrew brother and sister and their suffering, eventually undergoes an ideological metamorphosis, his father and brother merely carve out an exception for the one Hebrew they love (and don’t think of as a Hebrew). Seti and Ramses truly love Moses - but rather than allowing that love to challenge their preconceptions and realize that all the Hebrews are human and worthy of love and compassion, they cling to a belief system that makes them superior and their actions always justified. And both end up alone. Seti dies while Moses is in the desert, never being able to reconcile with him, and with Ramses damaged by the weighty words and expectations Seti set on his shoulders. Ramses then loses his son at a young age, becomes estranged from his brother, and at the end of the film is left behind to cry out in rage and loneliness. Thus, both Ramses and Seti demonstrate an aspect of Jewish and Christian faith that is often misunderstood. They were both capable of love, even love of a person from a class they considered beneath them. But God calls people to not just love their family and friends, but all peoples. True love isn’t just a father’s love for a son, but love of people he does not know, or was even raised to despise or dismiss. Love means turning the other cheek to your enemy and ending cycles of violence. Love means forsaking your own sense of righteousness and self-indulgence to care for the least amongst society. And at that, Seti and Ramses failed. If Seti or Ramses were abusive fathers, that would completely undermine that point. Both were good fathers - and that still didn’t make them good people.
@plugshirt1762

I do feel though that the message is somewhat undermined by the fact that Moses is only able to recognize the hebrews as human being when he learns he is one of them so in a sense he is no different than Ramses or his father and would have likely continued down that path. I feel as if it would have been far more powerful if Moses had learned of heritage after his redemption as the way it is now still makes for an amazing story but it hardly shows Moses to have been a better person in any way other than random circumstance

Yeah, but that's in the books. It's not really that well connected to the movie canon, so dismissing it isn't an issue. The tragic hero character arc can be very good, but it was fairly weak in the books, since there wasn't much being build up of him being a hero, for it to all fall apart (plus, he didn't even so much fall as get possessed... which is a pretty uncreative and weak way to go about it, and it takes any potential accountability from him, thus rendering Kozmotis the Mary Sue to Book Pitch's almost anti-sue personality). He was just told to be beloved and whatnot. It has a lot of potential though - that's why I like to explore it -, but the execution was lacking, imo, because in its execution it turns his backstory a weak ploy for sympathy, rather than a genuinely touching backstory. And this general trend of poor execution of good concepts is what, in my mind, brings down the general quality of the book series.

Fun fact: in spanish, Shark Tale was called "El Espantatiburones" (The shark frightener / The shark scarer) and instead of "shark slayer" they called Oscar "Espantatiburones" as well. It's odd because it kinda shifts the movie to focus on Oscar instead of the sharks, which all in all i find more accurate considering the story does revolve around him. Also as per usual, localizations always get toned down in the name for some reason.

That goes for the Dutch version as well, in which both the title of the film and Oscar's title are made to be "De haaiensnaaier" (The shark snitch)

Death is underrated. He's #1 in my book. His whistle is so iconic, it gave me chills when I saw it for the first time, and his presence is legitimately threatening.
