Lyrics:
And I can’t believe I’m still talking about you
That feeling
I should’ve lost it
I should’ve lost it by now
I can’t believe I’m still holding out and seeing signs
I’ve truly lost it
I’ve truly lost it
This time
You’re the last
You’re the last of my old things
The cast from my broken limbs
I can’t believe I’m still walking around a believer
I should’ve lost it
I should’ve lost it
By now
And I can’t believe I’m still making excuses for your crimes
I’ve truly lost it
I’ve truly lost it
This time
You’re the last
You’re the last of my old things
The cast from my broken limbs
You’re the famous last words
I wish I never uttered
That I wish I never stuttered
That I wish I‘d had time to learn
You’re the last
You’re the last of my old things
The cast from my broken limbs
You’re the last
You’re the last of my old things
The cast from my broken limbs

James was so right when he said he wanted to address the loss of a friendship in a song/album partly because it's so unusual to find the topic in music; most heartbreak tracks are about partner issues but, if we think about it, friendships might mold and define us even more. Plus, the video feels so accurate in depicting the musical and lyrical atmosphere of the whole album, since I get the impression that James is in a constant kind of emotional limbo, not quite living nor completely dying (for instance, songs like Funeral or Frozen manifest this state of numbness and delicate tension between life and death, and even on this very song the chorus' harmonies seem to be descending on a [beautiful] downward spiral). The end also feels precise because he appears to be relieved to finally be free from his cast or physical/emotional hindrances, but also afraid and even apprehensive to fully dive into the water/new experiences, reflecting on "you're the last of my old things, the cast from my broken limbs". The message might then be: how much is he (or are we) able to leave the past behind against how dependent and even masochistic we have become to those traumatic situations that subconsciously make us feel a connection (no matter how twisted or toxic it can be) to our past and ultimately form a certain type of sense of belonging?

"you're the last of my old things" I've been hurting a lot this year over losing a relationship with someone that's been with me over very pivotal years of my growth. I've never been that close with anyone before. It feels so hard moving on into the rest of my life leaving behind a love that has taught me so much and is very much a part of me now. I'm just staying looking at a fading fire, just trying to remember it a little bit before having to move on

@@hunterkeels8247 I am pretty sure he is part of the entire process. I do not know of an actual creative artist, who co- writes/writes and co-creates/creates their own music, to just completely remove themselves from the final process. But it is always important to have an independent professional ear when you master the final material. Mastering is a different beast than creating for sure. As the artist, you already heard the material you created 1000 times before it actually lands in the mastering studio. One needs to keep a fresh ear to a certain extend to then approve of the final product. Cause once it is released... no more changes...

Really? I’m guessing you aren’t British. James Blake is one of the most famous artists and producers in the UK and likely the world! He’s won a Grammy and been nominated for 5. I hardly think 3000 views in half an hour is a metric to go by. People are less interested in a lot of his new stuff but it’s much more niche, and James Blake has never cared about publicity. If you had heard his obscure music in the beginning you would know this. Underrated is such an overused term nowadays, and I don’t know why people think it’s a compliment.

@@jensen_chuah Skill has nothing to do with it. Most of the people making the most sales are far from having the most skill. It’s about what sells, it should be obvious why James Blake wouldn’t be mainstream. British people don’t care about these big figures because we have a thriving music community that is supported regardless of American ideas of popularity. It does not work this way in America, so I don’t blame you for thinking this way, this is the reason actually why Im going back!

@@josefinaherreweghe5358 I see your point, but the fact we see an active heart beat monitor at the very beginning doesn't preclude him from passing away sometime after the camera pans away. At the very least, I'd categorize what's happening to him as a out of body/near death experience. He relives past memories and then at the very end winds up at peace by the ocean, which can be a symbol for eternity

This is so simple, yet amazing song. James Blake has an amazing ear for details. I rarely hear anything that gives me as deep pleasure as those gliding vocal harmonies in the chorus. It's like someone's tickling your ears from within. Sounds absolutely beautiful. I wish I could write a song like this.

@@CP-ck1gf James Blake has helped produce songs and collaborated with many brilliant black artists like SZA, JID, Swavay, Kendrick Lamar, Jay-z, Beyonce, André 3000 and more- I haven't read many articles, but if there was any assuming/insinuating in his articles that he felt that way towards the black community, I highly doubt these artists would give him the time of day to collab and support him the same way he supports them?

First of all, he's only famous because of me and the years he exploited my family. Second, This guy is a racist. He pretends to want to help minorities but he is actually sabotaging them and helping white people (like BIllie Eilish, Lana del Ray and the Glass Animals guy) succeed in very devious ways. He writes articles that seem to support blacks if you don't read them too carefully. If you analyze them carefully, you'll see that he's actually insulting blacks, assuming they're not going to be intelligent enough to read between the lines. He's actually 56-year-old Andrew Sargent of West Chester University. Can't carry a tune in person to save his life. It's all auto-tune and other effects, too. Just got into this industry to push his agenda. If anyone sees through his act, he destroys them, too. He's trying to destroy my family now because I called him out
