His father was diagnosed with advanced kidney disease prompting him to write this song. Subsequently a donor was found and he has since recovered. The video was done in one take as it was too emotional to do another. Stunning song and performance - loved your heart-felt reaction.

Extra-cool part about that... it was a distant cousin that learned of the situation because of the song, so he was tested and was the first/only one they found who was a match; he donated a kidney and saved James' father's life.

Read the description of the song. His father was dying from kidney failure and was at 11% function with no available donors. Blunt wrote the song to say his goodbye to his dad, played it privately for his dad, then asked his dad if he would sit in on the one take video. The video was released, blew up the charts, was heard by a distant cousin who was moved to get tested and was found to be the only compatible donor, which ultimately saved Blunt's father's life.

It is a eulogy to his Father,, who is still alive,, but his kidneys are only at 11%. He wanted to tell his Dad that he loves him and is a friend, not just a Father. Wow, that was heart-wrenching and was emotionally draining. Lovely and touching reaction Hap. Beautiful choice Debra. Peace J ✌ ☮ 💕🦂.

So he is still alive 3 years later. During the song james said he and his father never had an emotional conversation and here was james singing and crying, his dad was patting him and saying What are you crying for I'm here. Wonderful song.

Not a son, but a daughter. My father died when I was 17. He bravely fought pancreatic cancer for three short months. It was so quick. That was thirty years ago and I miss him and mourn for him like it was just yesterday. "I know your mistakes, and you know mine." omg that hits so hard.

I also lost my father to pancreatic cancer when I was 19. He was diagnosed my senior year in high school and given 4 months to live. He survived almost a full year after being diagnosed. I know my family was one of the fortunate ones when it comes to pancreatic cancer. I’ve heard so many stories of how quick it is for other families. Breaks my heart that you (and others) didn’t get more time. I’m 41 now and hearing this song for the first time. It’s simply fantastic and embodies every emotion I felt at that time in my life. James Blunt literally wrote a masterpiece.
