@@terryhogan327 Mate, that's intense, as horrible as it is, I feel a connection to you. My father was the strongest and most competent person i'd ever known, a universe in which his life is thrown away in such a slow and painful process seems nothing but wasteful to me. I was so angry at life for a long time, i'm not half the man he is or was... he was a provider and a protector in as many ways as you could imagine, he turned so many wayward teenagers into productive members of society, but he kind of failed with his own two boys... I shouldn't say that, he gave us every opportunity, but we took it for granted... the values were passed on; though and I hope I can pass them on to my children...

When this song was released, Colonel Blunt had already been a kidney donor.. then, when he was diagnosed with Kidney Disease,he was of course Stage 4 because he did not have his other kidney to rely on. After the song release, with the video, a distant Cousin of the Colonel’s came forward to be tested for potential kidney donation. They were a match & saved his life. The song was written & performed with all proceeds going to the British Forces Charity ‘Help for Hero’s’. James followed in his Father’s footsteps & became Captain in the British Army. Back in 1999, when his Father was deployed to Kosovo, James said to his Father ‘I’m not your Son, you’re not my Father, we are two men saying goodbye’. As Soldier to Soldier rather than Son to Father.

I truly think that this song and video with all of the raw emotion is arguably the best song written. Then the video, I have watched it about 30 times when people react and I still cry because I lost my mom and dad young. So this video and the song fits. I was with both of my parents when they passed. I was holding their hands. I told my dad that I will be alright cause I was his only girl, I loved my daddy so much! Anyway I told him that I would be ok he needs to go. 45 seconds later he was gone. I had to watch my mom bleed to death. I can’t unsee that. She had a blood disorder and she was on a blood thinner for a blood clot. And she started bleeding internally and then it started coming out of her eyes, ears, nose, and mouth. They had to tape her eyes shut. It was the worse thing that I have ever witnessed in my life! My mom was a wonderful person she was a mom that loved her kids and husband more than anything! She was as close to a saint and I mean that. I was holding her hand it was still warm so I felt safe and then it went cold. I have never got over either death. People used to ask me what my biggest fear was and I said it was losing my parents. They were my everything! So please anyone that reads this please love you mom and dad because when they are gone that emptiness is so hard. I miss them more than I can say. So Tom thank you for reacting I am really happy that you could feel this song.

And they say there's a god. My mum and dad died within 5 months of each in 1999, mum had dementia, dad died first and mum kept asking for him, she was in a psychiatric home and it was horrendous, I was told by social services I couldnt look after her she needed 24 hour care, she died of a broken heart, it took me 7 years to accept they'd gone, I cried every day for 7 years and still do with memories. No we never get over it, we just carry on. I'm so sorry for your losses 😪

Tom, at the time he recorded this, there was no hope for his dad recovering because they couldn't find a matching doner. As someone else said, this song saved his life when a distant cousin saw it & ended up being a match! He & his dad both served in the British Royal Army so this had to be difficult for both being "hard butt" soldiers! More male reactors wept over this than females - "Patrol Gaming" (he had to leave for several minutes), "Birdman's Place", Vocal Coach, Adam Mishan, "The King Family", Lucas Hassel & many more! My eyes have "leaked" every time I've watched this even knowing that his dad is still alive! His raw emotion is just gut wrenching! Let's have some more gorgeous Home Free Christmas or their silliness & Have a Merry Christmas!

The Patrol Gming reaction was very emotional, since the song was very similar to his story, and the story he shared about his dad was very touching. I first heard this song when I got in the car in the hospital parking lot after spending the night with my dad. We had talked all night and had said everything to one another that we wanted to say, and he died about 2 weeks later. When I got in the car that morning and heard this song, I started bawling like a 225 lb baby. It still really gets to me.

James and his father were both high ranking officers in the British army, James a Captain and his father a Colonel, you don't show emotions or weakness, as we say in England a stiff upper lip. His father agreed to be in this video, which makes it more heartbreaking, it was recorded in one take... All moneys made from this song James gave to British veterans charities..

Tom, you said a very important thing, (without realizing it I think), the fact that James's father agreed to be in his sons tribute song to him shows his dad was chasing his sons monsters away still, (or also). So, bottom line his dad was there for his son, and his son was letting his dad know he was there for him. The love between father and son may not always be obvious, (stiff upper lip and all), but there is an unspoken bond of mutual love non the less.

Agreed. this was a hard pill for my silverback gorilla dad, to allow his son to be the caregiver. It was a horribly sad and long battle for alpha, where there was no one in the pack that wanted to assume it like he did. This is a perfect tribute to the words they felt weird saying past at a running past the other kind. The day to day my brother handled and my dad accepted, in between these weird struggles between our parents becoming our charges,

From what I have put together... His father was stage 4 kidney failure with only 11% functionality. He was on a donor's list but being O+ it was unlikely he would find a match. All the immediate family was not a match either. The song was based on a pome his sister originally wrote for her father or something like that. He played the song for the first time for his father in a closed room and he loved it. He agreed to be in the video. After the video went public and became popular a distant cousin stepped forward and was a perfect match. As far as I know his father is doing well to this day. For people that have lost their fathers (like me), especially men, this song is painful. The emotion in the song, in his voice, and in his face in the video is just so intense. Personally I do not care much for his voice, but everything else is so good I can ignore his voice. Personally this song is likely in my top 20 now. The American Idol audition of Iam Tongi is actually where I heard the song first and I had to track down the original. Both videos are incredibly moving yet very different.

I had to do it, didn’t I? (I am driving My mother to her 5th chemo session tomorrow after she basically was dropping dead in front of me back in August (luck I was there - she got a ruptured iintentinces causing instant flat-lining of blood-preasure - that also made what we all move through them consistently to leak into her bowels - sending her into septic chock. So good thing that happened - since emergency surgery where her belly was sliced wide open to allow doctors to instantly start to empty all the organs from her belly to be hand-washed of course allowed them to take a good look at what they were washing - so discovering cancer in the intestines - with spreading to liver - and unfortunately to the gut itself. A situation that can not be cured right now (There are some experimental treatments around - but they are so hard that they kill a 70 year old homan being - I kid may handle it). So as I live with my mother now (my father died of lung cancer a decade ago) the aim is that mother is fine enough to celebrate Christmas this year with my sister's family and her twin grandchildren (given that COVID can be somewhat contained. As no prognisisis is yet given based on the current situation - she is also recovering from inflammation of her entire gut being lifted out and handwashed - to see how cancer is responding is difficult. Fuck, I did not mean to share the diagnosis of my mother. But I think this song is important for us men and how we emote shit that is real. Knowing how it turned out, and knowing that James and his father both have background as officers in the British Army before this was created - There is light to be found here for us men and how to share vulnerability. Driving my mother tomorrow will give answers to a lot of things. Primarily "this is last Christmas with your grandchildren" or "this will kill you - but it can be good life to have for several years". I have taken responsibility for other's lives since I was in my teens. Working as a mountain guide and white water rafting guide and in the military - later taking studying kids to the Arctic as a scientist - safe in promising "I will get you back to your family from this". Because I am at the wheel in these situations - knowing I have influence on shit that is happening. To have first gone through father (that died less than 12 hours after I got home) and now mother being terminal - oh it is a lesson in humility. My choices are of no consequence. I can not lead a platoon to the left or right to increase safety. I can not dig into the snow with some scientist to increase survivability in a blizzard . Ultimately one is in the passenger seat of a very slow-motion car-crash that allows for a LOT of conversations. And I know that the next weeks conversations will depend a LOT of the message coming tomorrow. There may be 3 months of time to say good buy. Or there may be 3 years. And still that is a bonus and a gift as I watched that old lady dying in front of me a few months ago calling emergency and doing all I have ever learnt about keeping her out of circulatory shock. When I COULD affect consequences. A fine reaction - and I am glad I got through it with all this mess again.

For all you who serve-James’ father (here in the video) is Colonel Charles Blunt and James was also an army officer. The line “😢I’m not your son you’re not my father we’re just two grown men saying goodbye” was what James said to his father as he left for his first tour ( when they both knew James could be killed). At the time of recording this video they both believed Charles was about to die. Everyone in the studio was crying except Colonel Charles, who was comforting James as you can see. He said “Why are you all crying, I’m not dead yet”. It was after this video went out that a distant relative saw it, and he was a match for a kidney ❗️

James has such a unique voice and this was a very emotional performance. When he recorded the song there was no matching donor so James expected his dad to die. After the recording the whole team was crying but not not his dad. He said: "Why is everyone crying, I'm still here?" The producers wanted to edit out the cracks in James' voice but he refused because he wanted it to be 100% real and honest. Monsters is one of the saddest songs I know. Another one is "How could you leave us" by NF. He wrote the song after his mom died from an overdose of pills.

He actually did this song for his dad, his dad is in the video with him. He wanted to share his emotions while he still had him. At that point his cancer was terminal and this was a goodbye note to his dad. When this song was released a distant relative came forward and ended up being a match and now his dad is doing well. Just shows magic is real

Just a slight correction, not that it is very important. Dad had kidney failure and, being a donor himself, only had one and was dying because they could not find a matching kidney. After this video a distant cousin - named Charles, as it happens, like Daddy Blount (James uses Blunt as an artist), came forward and donated a kidney

This song is so heart-tugging and emotional that it's hard to watch. Honestly, you could fit this song to either parent. That this song saved his dad's life is proof of how powerful music is.

This isn't a typical song, so it doesn't need a typical reaction. Emotions need to be felt and expressed and I feel that this song acts as a catharsis to sooooo many people.

This song hits you like a truck, such a beautiful, powerful song, i cry almost every time I hear this song I lost my older brother 8 months ago to covid, he was my first hero and had such an influence on me As well as his music career, James Blunt is also a war hero, well worth researching his time in Iraq

I don’t believe I’ve ever heard a more accurate song that covers the distress we feel at the end of a parents death. Having been present for both of my parents (both from cancer), long before this song was released I am still surprised that it still feels so raw. Despite a military career (1978-2008 Royal Marine) my first reaction to this video was uncontrollable tears. My father, a veteran RAF pilot of WW2 would understand as he tried to explain, the evening he died, that even bootnecks are allowed to cry. Thanks dad, I’ll be seeing you soon if my prognosis timeline is accurate.

Oh no. I am so sorry for you. I hardly know what to say to make this better. I hope you are loved, not alone and at peace, whenever that time is. Please take care of yourself, the best you can. Love and light my dear, from East Anglia. xxxx

@@DawnSuttonfabfourthank you for the kind thoughts. Yes, I’m not alone having met and married a woman just as I was diagnosed. Even though I tried to insist that it wasn’t right for her to take me on it turns out that she’s far stronger, emotionally speaking, than anyone I know. The weirdest thing though is that I only knew that she was a doctor, started out as a GP, but was now working as the Palliative Care Consultant at a nearby hospital and hospice, the latter being the place I’ll end up at if it gets too much for her keeping me at home. I’ll admit that if I hadn’t met her at the time there’s no doubt that I would have followed in the footsteps of a few mates that couldn’t cope with ptsd and civilian life. Hopefully that sounds like a win or happy ending? All the best.

@@Lord_Ronin_The_Compassionate It sounds wonderful to me my Lord. I am happy for you; few who are sick and alone find another soul that will take them in. It sounds like you thoroughly deserve to have such a kind, compassionate woman, who loves you and who is loved in return. None of us know how short or long our journey is but surely to be loved along the way, whether the beginning, middle or closer to the end, is better than to travel it alone. I wish you both peace and happiness together. To be truly loved is the most marvellous thing we humans accomplish. If only it were more widespread these days. Thank you so much for letting me know.

@@amanday.2822 thank you for the thoughts. As for my loved ones I’m the first to admit that I’m rather spoilt, which makes me uncomfortable as there are people in far worse situations than I, but as explained earlier, my wife can be very sensitive/stubborn in equal measure. I feel as though I’m depriving others in the hospice (my room is now booked) that would benefit from Pam’s expertise, as she’s just taken a leave of absence to keep an eye on me, but apparently I’m not being honest with myself because I don’t feel as bad as the medics explain. I suppose the fact that the hospice room being booked for the New Year 2023 should be a pretty a fairly obvious indication that things are quickly coming to a head, but meanwhile I’ll try to use the usual Royal/Bootneck motto of “cheerfulness in adversity” and carry on joking regardless (assuming I’m awake). Again, thank you for your kind words to some weird stranger on the internet, it’s always appreciated, David S. Burley in Wharfedale.
