Both James and his Father (That's him in the video) were serving officers in the British Army, and the "I'm not your son, you're not my father" line was their way of saying Goodbye,Good luck and I love you without actually saying it when James was sent on deployments. At the time,James' father was dying of stage four kidney disease, and due to his rare blood type,a donor couldn't be found, and he wasn't expected to live for more than a few months. Luckily, after this video came out,a distant cousin came forward for testing, and was found to be a match.

You missed the last second of that video where his dad pats his arm. Such a nice moment. James is a songwriting genius and will always make you feel stuff, whether it's sadness, joy, or anger. The dude is at his best when writing from his lived experiences. His songs "No Bravery", "The Girl That Never Was", and "Carry You Home" also fall into that category. James saw some brutal things while serving in the British Army during the 90s in the Kosovo War, the guy's a bloody hero.

james was in the military he was a Captain in the British army. When he was being deployed, his father would say: "You're not my son, I'm not your father, we're just two grown men saying goodbye...". This song breaks me every time I hear it. The video was shot in one take, because James wanted the emotion to be raw and genuine. His father was diagnosed with terminal kidney disease and this was written as a goodbye. In a positive irony, the song was so popular, it got the attention of a distant relative who turned out to be a match for a kidney donation and his dad is now doing great. He spent all of 2020 in isolation….

"No bravery" by James is such an underrated song (in my opinion) it makes me feel all the feels: anger, sadness, despair, helplessness.... I grew up in Germany and had a lot of kids in my class who were refugees from the Balkan. I'll never forget that look in their eyes when we spoke about the war in school. If you react to it watch the official video. Original scenes/ pictures from Kosovo, so be prepared.

This song and the story behind it made a lot of people sign up to the donor register around the world so not only did it save his father but other families were saved too. It literally chased the monsters away for them all. The proceeds from the song were all donated to the Help the Heroes charity of great Britain which helps take care of our veterans and families as both Colonol Blunt and Captain James Blunt were in the military.

My dad passed in 2011 and he was unconscious already when I finally got there. I don't even know if he knew I was there. What gets me is the part in the song that says "while you're sleeping I'll try to make you proud" cuz I have always felt like I never made him proud and its just this feeling of guilt that never goes away. Thank you for your honest reaction, I subbed!

I feel guilty as well, for not being able to handle my father's last few hours. I sat with him for several hours on several days before he passed but knowing that he was transitioning made me so fearful that I would be "interfering" in some way with the process if I were to be too intimate, so I only sat by and watched as he made disturbing sounds which sometimes sounded painful. My greatest regret: Dad was fond of sweets, but he was borderline diabetic, so I kept bringing him artificially sweetened cookies and candy which he did not like. I was trying to keep him alive to the age of 100 that he always said was his goal, but (for crying out loud!) he was already 93 and fading fast. Why didn't I bring him the sugar sweetened treats he desired? I'll never forgive myself for that.

Aww, you'll always find something to feel guilty about. We in this age are not conditioned to deal with death. You were there and didn't abandon him - that's the most important thing.

I've seen so many reactions to this - and it still brings the lump to my throat. But I can get through all of it, without crying - until the bit that happens AFTER you paused the video at the end. That very last second of the video - that's the bit that still kills me every time. The pat on his sons arm.

I have noticed every one who reacts to this song has yet to not cry every single on does which means this song has depth and it hits home. I lost my dad when i was 5 I can remember things about him and this song makes me cry every time. I am now 65 so yeah real men do cry and show emotion. One thing dude I can tell you is your dad knew you cared even if you did not see him on his last day. Trust me regret will eat you alive one thing i can tell you is write your dad a letter and tell him everything you would of said on that last day. Trust me it will help.
