James and his father were officers in the British Army. At the time of the making of this video his father was dying of kidney failure (having already donated one himself) and no donor in sight. Following the release of the song a distant cousin came forward and he pulled through thankfully.

That was his dad in the video and the first time he had heard the song. They recorded it in one take and at the end everyone in the studio was crying except his father. He asked them why they were crying, that he was still there. His label wanted to do a full production but he said no. He wanted to be real, no auto tune, no cuts, nothing but him singing to his father. After this video was released a distant cousin came forward who was a match. His father got a transplant and is doing well. I cry every time I watch it so don't be sorry for showing emotions. I have seen men and women break down sobbing and have to stop recording in the middle in order to get themselves together before they could finish it.

Holy crap. I've never heard this song. My dad died from cancer 7 years ago. I wish I had gotten to say goodbye but he didn't tell us he even had cancer. He didn't want to "burden" us, but the pain of not saying goodbye was worse than any pain of watching him due could have been.

Sorry to hear about your dad. My dad died in August from lung cancer. I hadn't spoken with him in years. I also didn't get to say goodbye. I found this poem right after his funeral. It really made me think about what could have been. Stay safe. I NEVER SAID GOOD-BYE I never got the chance to say I Love you, I never got the chance to say I'll miss you. Nobody told me that you were going to die, It hurts, I never said GOOD-BYE. Where are you now, please talk to me, Show yourself and let me see. I know that can't happen no matter how much I try, All I wanted to do is say GOOD-BYE. I hope that you are happy wherever you are, I have you in my heart no matter how far. To the heavens above, I wish I could fly, Only to give you a warm GOOD-BYE. I will remember you each day that I live, You were such a good person with so much to give. Such a privilege to have known you, no one can deny. I think it might be time to say GOOD-BYE. I will keep with me the good times that we shared, I want you to know just how much I really cared. Till we meet again, on God we must rely, I love you, I miss you, and for now, GOOD-BYE.

James dad was actually dying from kidney disease & this was his tribute & farewell to his dad. Thankfully his dad received a donor kidney & is doing okay now. If this song doesn't get to you emotionally, there is something wrong with you. This song resonates with me as I was my dad's caregiver for 5 years until he passed away 2 years ago.

“Monsters” was a heartfelt tribute to his father. The emotional track reflects the deep bond between them and a touching farewell. In the music video for “Monsters,” James Blunt sings directly to the camera, his eyes welling up with tears...The video is so powerful because sitting beside James Blunt is his real-life dad, Colonel Charles Blount. who was a former cavalry officer, battling stage 4 chronic kidney disease. The song captures the raw emotions of facing mortality and saying the things one wants to say to a loved one before it’s too late 💗 I can never get through this, without crying..........

You had a lifetime with your father. While I'm extremely jealous of that fact I think there's lots of mercy in the fact when people die young. My parents died when I was 11 and they died together so I never had to witness one missing the other. I also don't have to worry how they live in this bad world every day. Even the worst situations there's always a silver lining

A very powerful song for anyone, because we are all children of someone, and most of us parents to a child. It's never too late to say I'm sorry....never too late to say I made mistakes...never too late to say I forgive you. Take that first step.

My darling mum (81) died two months ago today. She wasn't in the best of health but I never expected her to pass. I was in the next room. Went into see her and she'd gone.... I'd only been in an hour beforehand she was fine. She slipped away without any fuss, or drama just how she always wanted to go. After the emergency services went I sat next to her and held her arm. This song has become so precious to me. She was 3 months premature in 1939 so she didn't do bad living to 81. But the gap in my life she's left is so huge. I miss her every second of every day. Wonderful reaction xxx

I was right there with you, tears streaming down my face. My grandson lost his father when he was 14. His father did everything with him including coaching him in different sports. In our little community, we have an annual parents/coaches baseball game to raise funds for the ball diamond. His father always played. But during the last stages of his illness, he was unable to play. My grandson made a tee shirt with two stick figures labeled, Me and Dad. He wrote, "I'm playing for my dad." Needless to say, when he took the field, I and many others couldn't hold back the tears through our smiles. I think his dad was the proudest he had ever been of his son. I left out many details and names to keep it short. That young man is now with the 82nd Airborne and has just re-enlisted. Proud? You betcha!

This song brought me to my knees. My father's relationship with me when I was young was an abusive one. So much so that I spent many years not talking to him. My father spent the last years of his life living as a hermit in the woods of Maine. He was found outside his cabin months after his death. What was left of him at least. In our last conversation he tried to reach out to me to connect as father and son. I told him that I didn't think of him as my father. He replied "But I am your father!" I said "My father is six hundred feet tall and broke bones and walls and mothers. It's best for you that I don't think of you as my father. To me you are an older friend that I share a similar sense of humor with that I speak to once a year (if that) on father's day." Eerily similar to " I'm not your son, you're not my father. We're just two grown men saying goodbye. I knew his mistakes, he knew some of mine. I could not forgive or forget. He was my monster.

I’m so very sorry. It’s a strange thing to encounter abrupt changes in life that totally change your perspective. It may seem like this will change you for the worse, and in some ways, it does when it accompanies that pain but also has a chance to help you grow in character and support for others that will encounter that same path. It doesn’t make it easier, it there will be opportunities for you to help others walk this difficult road. I’m sure both your parents would want you to embrace the future full force and would want you to be happy. It may not feel like it right now since you’re younger, but our lives here are fleeting. It won’t be long before you will get to see them again. It will feel like waking from the longest dream. Blessings my friend.

Sometimes, looking at things from a different angle can really make you think. One time, I was sitting on my balcony, thinking about the tough times my family was going through. My 5-year-old son came up to me and asked, "Daddy, are you okay?" That question hit me hard. This song really speaks to me. Every now and then, we need situations where we feel humble and vulnerable to remind us that, as fathers, husbands, and men, we're also just humans.

Lately he had been trying to get better and try to be around more. My brother and Sister hungout with him, but last 3-4 times i had said no. Came from the emotional Eminem video to this one based on what you said in the video. I'm ready this time with my tissues. This is what KZbin is all about. Taking a risk with a recommended video and becoming a fan.

Wonderful reaction to a gut-wrenching song!! Like others who have commented below, I too was the caregiver of both my parents who have passed. I wouldn’t trade it for anything, but the day you become the parent to your parent changes you forever…😪💔Love to all those who have gone through it, are going through it , and will be going through it….❤️‍🩹

This is one of the most tear jerking tributes a person can do for a parent. I cry every time I hear this song because you can just feel his emotion in the words. James Blunt...Kudos to you for being able to sing such an emotional song about your dad!

Brought tears to my eyes again... My Dad lost his battle with cancer in 2019. When the time drew near, his fear of dying became so great that I and my son had to sit by his bed with our hand on his chest. We were to wake him if he quit breathing.... In the end I had to chase his monsters away... I called a pastor whom was here in a short time. He was then at peace... I had chased the monsters away and he passed peacefully in his sleep. Very powerful song.

Oh my gawd. I've never heard this song before and it is so beautiful and sad at the same time. I'm sure everyone is shedding a tear listening to this. I have no idea how he could hold his composure while singing it directly to his father.

Yes, this is a good one! Hits you in the heart & you can't help but be emotional! Thank you for not editing that out. My father had Stage 4 prostate cancer & underwent chemo in late 2020. He finished right around Christmas. New Year's 2021 he was given a good report by his Dr. that the treatment had drastically reduced the cancer & he had a positive prognosis of at least 5 more yrs with us. 2-3 weeks later he started having pain in his side & back & became wheelchair-bound. After ER & dr. visits he was hospitalized & it was found the cancer had metastasized into small cell carcinoma & invaded his lungs, bones & and all organs. We lost him on Feb. 18, 2021. Here I am a year later, first hearing this song and I sobbed my heart out because it describes those last couple of days with him. I love your reaction. Stay real! 💓

Thank you so much for your comments. I’m so so sorry to hear about what you had to go through. I lost my father back in 2019 and now my father-in-law which is 91 years old was just taken to a board and care facility. I think he’s going through the dying process as he’s lost like 15 pounds in a week and weighs 140 pounds now. He has a hard time eating so I know that I’m probably gonna be losing him as well in the next few weeks. It could be hard but it’s also kind of healing to talk about it like you have. Blessings to you my friend.

I’m in my early 40s with my dad in his early 70s and I had the same reaction (also a father to two girls 10/7) as you. Brilliant song that will make millions all over the world tear up to ball! 🥹😢 The American Idol Iam cover of it is amazing/sad too. They also did a duo that was sad/touching.

Hi larryshair, This is my first time listening to your channel.... I subscribed . Well I have been a James Blunt fan since his release of "Your Beautiful" in 2004 . I have loved all his songs so much. Thank you for your warm and thoughtful reaction and comments for "Monsters"..... my dad died when I was 25 and this is the first song that I have heard that explains how I feel about my dad . I am sorry for your loss . Much appreciation for the work you put into your channel .

You should check out both of Iam Tongi's versions of this song if you haven't already. He was last years American Idol winner. He performed this by himself in his Idol debut and sang it with James Blunt in the finals. It was one of the most touching things I have ever seen when he broke down singing it in the finals.

Thank you. Oh my goodness. This song reminds me of when my mom passed away. She had a brain tumour and at the end, she needed complete care. We kept her at home and took care of her ourselves. On her last day, I left work early when I was told she wasn't doing well. I made it to her side and took her hand. I whispered in her ear, telling her I was there and I told her we'd be ok and that she can go if she needs to. As soon as I spoke those words, mom took 2 more breaths and passed away. My youngest grandson was the last baby she held. So much sadness and joy all mixed together. It was such an honour to be able to drop everything (except work) and just spend that time with my mom. She didn't get super weak until the Friday before the Monday that she passed away. We had 2 months from diagnosis until that day and I AM SO GRATEFUL. We spent hours talking and laughing together. Like James said, I knew the mistakes she'd made and she knew mine - but that wasn't the time for any of that. We just loved each other. Period. She's been gone just over 3 years now and I still choke back tears but I'm glad she's free from pain. I know she's happy and healed in Heaven and I'll see her again. Earthly good byes still hurt though. Thank you for playing this song. I'd never heard it before and I still wouldn't have if it wasn't for you reacting to it. Thank you.

Just a little aded info for you. James' record company wanted him to use 'Auto-Tune' but he refused because he wanted this recording to be 100% real and genuine and what we see is the first take. It was the first time James had sung this to his dad, who only recently had been diagnosed with stage 4 kidney failure. I don't know how James managed to hold himself together for this but we can all see how emotional he was by the tears in his eyes. It's all quite amazing.

Yeah, I just let my mom go a couple months ago, and yeah, this was a punch in the throat, she struggled with her demons till her final hours, I'm not a fan of his voice, but I'm drunk on the raw emotion and truth of his pain, I can still smell the room, and hear the equipment, and feel her hand in mine...
