James Blunt's father (Colonel Charles Blunt) was dying of stage 4 kidney failure and they were not finding a donor. James (who also served in the military as a Captain) wrote this as a goodbye. The "I'm not your son, you're not my father" part was something he and his Dad would say to each other whenever they had to deploy. (think British Military / stiff upper lip mindset) BTW... James Blunt donated the proceeds from this to "Hope for Heros" a veteran's charity. Because of this song, a distant relative of theirs got tested and turned out to be as match for Charles Blunt and he is alive and well now. LOVED the reaction! 🎶🔥💖😎

My dad died in February this year and.. yeah.. this song is literally a hammer blow men.. we were very close and we weren't the type to say I love you to each other but we both knew that one was the most important person for the other.. it's always when they're gone that we say I love you.. by ego or by nature (yeah..we the men, are like that in general) Rest in Peace Dad, I love you. same i only once have said "i love you", i dont know if its funny or sad, but it was on accident, i usualy frequently said to my mom i love you, i got so comfortable around dad one moment that it just slipped automatically. We are not so open to emotions, to say i love you, but same as you we also know that we do, and that is the most important thing. Though, its still important to say it, you might miss the chanse to do so.

There's this thing that some reactors do where they pause the end ever so slightly too early and miss one of the most powerful moments (for me anyway). His dad reaches over and pats his arm so tenderly. As someone who never knew their father it's always a great finisher for me. Caps it off wonderfully.

This song can bring tears to my eyes nearly everytime I see the video, but when I saw the tears start running down Chel's face, it was really hard to hold mine back. I actually cried more at the end of your reaction listening to your reflection on the song and hearing why this song touched you both (especially Mat), than I did while the music video was playing. This is one of the most emotional songs I listened to and it hit home with me. I lost my dad when I was 5 and I remember saying goodbye to him as he passed. I remember he would always look under the bed for the monster etc. To this day 55 yrs later I remember his death affected me terribly and started my depression that I deal with to this day, I remember him being a very caring father and loving too. I miss him to this day and I am glad James Blunt's father survived, it's hard losing a parent at any age.

I'm not sure if you take suggestions from the comments, if you do, I suggest an Aussie legend, John Farnham. Anything from his concert with the Melbourne symphony orchestra is overly amazing. The pain and emotion I feel from the both of you is palpable even thru a computer screen. This song resonates powerfully to all who hear it. I lost my dad to suicide when I was 19. My brother followed his path 11 years later. Every day for me is a titanic struggle while I suffer from what ailed my family. I feel you, man. You're not alone ever in this world. I hope things get better for you. There are people to talk to out there, caring people. Even in a comments section for a video!! Great reaction and review, the both of you, it's immensely encouraging to watch and be part of these heartfelt reaction videos, and remind myself that this world isn't just filled with garbage, but real humans. Background. James Blunt's father Charles, himself a kidney donor, was diagnosed with stage four chronic kidney disease. Blunt wrote "Monsters" to "express his feelings about his father and his illness, almost as if it's a touching farewell to his father"....the studio also wanted to do retakes because he was legit crying and he told them to stick it

My dad died when I was 4; that was seventy years ago and I still miss him and this song is a gut punch to everyone who hears it. Whether they're gone or not; whether you had time to forgive, forget, say goodbye or not; we all know this time comes for our relationships. I'm thinking about how to say goodbye to my grandchildren because it's not today but it's not never. "My turn" - the song acknowledges how at the end the role of child and parent reverses. It's our turn to become our parents' caretakers. Music is supposed to make you feel and this song achieves that end.
