I remember going to see Goldeneye at the cinema with my dad when I was 7 years old. The film was rated 12 so I wasn't allowed to have a ticket. My dad bought us tickets for Babe the Sheep Pig instead, and then we just snuck in to see Goldeneye. I genuinely felt like I was Bond for a moment, going to see Bond.

Take Thunderball, remove Barry's score, Adam's sets, Moore's cinematography, the classy 60s fashions, Fiona Volpe, the sense of a real, lush location, and finally any sense of plausibility whatsoever, and replace it with the aesthetics of a low-budget Italian film from the 70s, cheap ugly video game references, and gadgets straight out of Get Smart. But that's what he means. "Dr No" is a good film, but it is because it sets up the elements of what makes a good Bond movie, but doesn't really experiment with the formula a lot, like films such as "The World is Not Enough" does

@@maniaccop3403 Huh? It's the first film. Literally every single thing in it is an experiment with the formula! It's incalculably more experimental that TWINE. Also it's full of iconic moments not just in the history of Bond films but in the history of cinema.
@sparky6086
@sparky6086 3 жыл бұрын
I believe, that "Dr No" should be cut a lot of slack, because the studio was just experimenting, with whether or not there was a signifigant audience for a James Bond film, so there wasn't much money or effort behind it. It was pretty much thought of as a "B" movie, as it was being made. After it was a hit, a little more money and effort was put into the next one, "From Russia with Love", so it was better, but they were still cautious with thier money and effort, just in case, "Dr No" was a fluke. Remember, in the early 1960's, many thought, that movies in general, were on their way out, because of the rising popularity of television, so it was a difficult time to attract investors. James Bond, as a franchise having proven itself with the first two movies, hit stride with "Goldfinger". Too bad, that Sean Connery lost interest and didn't do "On Her Majesty's Secret Service", then it would have been awesome. George Lazenby did okay and seemed to be catching on to acting, at times in that movie, so he may have grown into the role, if he continued, but of course, that was his only Bond film.

Goldeneye is elite. The score is actually fitting. A cold war undertone. That it hasn't ended and Bond has to stop it. The plot itself is outstanding and it would be the best writing if the promotional material didn't fudge it up by saying Sean Bean was a supporting actor. Should have made it as Alec Trevelyan played by Sean Bean at the end of the score.

Personally I would put Casino Royale at the top. The story is fantastic and believable enough not to feel too over the top, the poker scenes are incredibly tense and the action scenes are so well shot, it still holds up brilliantly 15 years later. The little head tilts to classic James Bond tropes throughout the film like Bonds quip about not caring if the martini is shaken or stirred, Bond winning the keys to Aston Martin DB5 and finally the classic one liner, followed by the main score at the very end, served to satisfy older fans while breathing new life into the franchise, grounding it and delivering one of the greatest Bonds we’ve ever had.

He was the most prepared to play bond by reading all the novels into bringing the caracter back to a serious and coldblooded agent after Moore's campiness he really brought back that side of the caracter.Really pity he did only 2 movies I would've love to see more bond movies with him.

I will never understand the obsession with Skyfall. It has been a while since I have seen it, so maybe I need to give it another shake, but the only thing I remember agreeing on or really enjoying was the cinematography. I will sing it's praises there. The lighting and framing of scenes at the end in Scotland are really great. Otherwise, I just find it alright. I think after viewing my own opinion and revisiting the movies I think why Goldeneye is so high up is it is able to balance fun and seriousness. I think Skyfall is too dour and Bond should be fun or it is at it's best when it's fun. It does not need to devolve to silliness or camp which can be fun in it's own right, but Goldeneye works so well because it knows WHEN to be serious and when to enjoy itself. Also though other than the opening car scene music, which kind has grown on me, the music is great in Goldeneye, the end showdown theme between Alek and James gets me every time.

He literally said he enjoyed all the train stuff. But the scenes on the Orient Express don't salvage the rest of the film, which , outside of some good performances that leave an impression, is ultimately a poorly-paced film that takes too long to get from one bit to the next. There's plenty of redeeming things about it, but ever since I watched it, I felt that same sort of disappointment that Calvin feels, where it's simply not as good a film as people make it out to be. I mean, let's not hide from the reality of it: It was *deliberately* designed to be more Hitchkockian, so much so that it's absolutely impossible not to notice it... but if I wanted to watch a Hitchkockian espionage thriller, then North by Northwest is objectively the better film in that regard by a large margin. FRwL's biggest problem is that Terence Young didn't do his own thing with it. Had he done so, I think FRwL could've turned out to be the film everyone likes to say it is. Still adore Matt Munro's theme, though.

Maybe but to be fair, the more I think about it, the more I fucking hate Spectre. I feel that Blofeld does not belong in modern Day bond and should remain a relic of the Cold War Bond films. Everything in Spectre seems so forced. In Quantum the shaky cam and the editing really fucked the action scenes quite a bit but in Spectre its the absolute opposite. The action scenes feel incredibly boring because they are way too polished, glossy and clean. I mean the italian car chase scene was incredibly boring... Nothing eventfull happens, I dont even remember anything of that scene. And there are way too many callbacks and what not. And I hate the fact that Craig has two of the absolute best bond movies and two of the worst. But coming back to it, Spectre is pretty darn bad. Yes the cinematography is impeccable but the stakes are not really all that thrilling when it almost completely negates the entire point of the previous three films. It felt really forced and neither Craig nor Waltz feels compelling. Waltz actually sucks ass in this film and we are talking about Christopher Waltz here... Blofeld should have been absolutely perfect for him but in the end it was pretty meh. I wasnt a fan of the whole "Welcome to my Underground Lair" feel as well. It feels soooooo fucking out of place and dated in 2015. Still is today, even more probably. I hope Bond 25 makes up for it cause honestly I seriously disliked Spectre and I actually in hindsight agree with the fact that its the worse on this list.

You've voiced the problem with Goldfinger for me. It gets a lot of praise, but I always feel like Bond is dragged along for most of the plot and very little is accomplished due to his agency. And for a character so defined by active competence, it falls a little flat. Meanwhile, there's little love for Dr. No except for the novelty, and people like FRWL but they actually rank highest for me--the films that came before Goldfinger had plots driven by Bond's practical spy work. In Dr. No he goes from old-fashioned detective work in a Murder She Wrote Jamaican murder mystery to blowing up a nuclear reactor powering a jamming device shooting down rockets as the Cold War space race is in full swing, gradually discovering how quaint and insignificant this minor colony of his fallen empire is, basically absorbed into one of the new spacebound superpowers, just as he is brought into Leiter's CIA orbit. And yet every step of the way, he individually and with a couple ragtag allies uses a combination of brain and brawn to overcome overwhelming odds and show the sun has not yet set on the British Empire. The titular character and his base, meanwhile, set the pattern for future Bond villains: arrogant evil geniuses with Mandarin collars/Nehru jackets alienated from a Western Civilization they find decadent and which Bond represents.

It's funny. This very video, combined with the realisation that there's a Bond reviewer who not only shares my love for GoldenEye and my disdain for Spectre, but is also able to watch the first two Connery movies without nostalgia goggles, is what got my back into the Bond franchise. And now that I've spent the last months watching the entire series twice (first in chronilogical order, then in opposite order of my preliminary ranking), I'm thinking you're being too harsh on Dr. No and From Russia With Love. It's nice to see that Goldeneye finally is almost on top in a ranking. Usually it is high ranked, but here it is finally in a deserved place. It's such a great movie. Brosman as Bond, the post Sowjet plot, Sean Bean, Xenia is nothing but amazing, the Russian General, the scenes and the song from Tina Turner. It's just perfect🥰

I always hate to see people not appreciating Sean Connery‘s final turn as James Bond where he came in and had a lot of creative control and got to actually give a final goodbye to the character and his performance as James Bond in that movie is absolutely phenomenal and that little wink at the camera at the end is a beautiful goodbye for Connery James Bond and I absolutely love it!

As far as Bond being against Melina getting revenge on Kristatoes in FYEO, Bond is a stone cold killer who shows no remorse when he kills and feels no pity (he wouldn't be good at his job if he did), he knew that Melina didn't have the mind set that he did and it would turn her into a person just like him if she avenged her parents (he was trying to save her from becoming an emotionless killer like himself). It's kind of similar to the dynamic between Bruce and Dick Grayson in Batman Forever.

@@bouya642 That's certainly a take. I know many who feel similarly. Considering the Bond film that got me into the series was Skyfall and Casino Royale was my second and favorite Bond film, I feel quite differently. It's a inconsistent era. You go from some of the best in the series (for my money) and then you get films like Spectre that just feel completely half assed and lifeless. I think each actor and set of films has their good qualities. I used to view the Brosnan era as a low point because they felt very by the numbers but looking back there's something nice about knowing that a certain level of quality would be reached. I'd never claim Tomorrow never dies was a masterpiece, but it's a fun enough ride and doesn't leave you frustrated like Spectre or No Time to Die.

Certainly more than Licence To Kill. It’s a pretty awesome movie that’s held up well in general, aside from obvious things like Bond siding with the Arabs who splintered into the Taliban later. Many scenes look surprisingly modern and seem like they were shot yesterday. Licence To Kill is too much of a relic of it’s era. It’s like a TV movie of some police procedural like Magnum PI mixed with a violent action movie like Death Wish and Die Hard starring James Bond and friends loaded up with all the late 80s tropes like ninjas, forced love triangles, waterskiing and roadhouse fights.

Calvin - Bond Reviewer thanks! YOLT was one of the first Bond films I saw (grew up in the gap between Brosnan and Craig) so there’s probably a fair degree of nostalgia involved, and it helps that it’s got the best soundtrack in the series (imo) too haha. When I think about it properly though there’s no Bond film that I enjoy as much as YOLT and I think enjoyment is the most important thing for this series. That’s why although Spectre does a lot of things fairly well it’s at the bottom, because that Bond/Blofeld brothers development just frustrates and disappoints me so much that I get no enjoyment out of that film anymore.

In Skyfall, things just happen as a matter of convenience without any establishment of possibility. He makes a very good point that it has some of the best chemistry between Bond and his leading lady. The films which succeed in that regard are definitely elevated- it's one of the strengths of the The Living Daylights, for instance. I believe in the romance between Maryam D'Abo and Timothy Dalton, like with Roger Moore and Maude Adams or Eva Green and Daniel Craig.

I disagreed with this ranking almost the entire way through, but this was so fun to watch! :) Such a massive franchise that I hold near and dear! So many different things to value and love about it. For example, I can't explain why Living Daylights is my all-time fav of the franchise or why Diamonds are Forever is my least favourite.... but Bond is awesome regardless. Something different for everyone! Great video! Keep my attention piqued the whole way through!

"Diamonds Forever," while not a great Bond movie, I really enjoy it primarily because Connery seems to be having such a good time. It's a guilty pleasure.

Ways to fix spectre - drop the whole brother thing, that would give blofeld as a more unknown distant and unnerving threat, while getting rid of one of the stupidest plot points in history - hire a more age appropriate actress that has stronger chemistry with Craig for Madeline Swann (would love Craig’s wife Rachel Weisz in this role, she is a fantastic actress, she is gorgeous and they must have amazing chemistry) - improve the sound design- all the action sequences would feel more visceral and exciting if the sound effects were less muted and the score could match the scenes better (that stupid flute noise when the helicopter flips is equivalent to the slide whistle in tmwtgg for me) - lose all the links to the other films except the mr white plot- No explanation needed Tell Andrew scott that the fact he is a villain is supposed to be a surprise- it’s painfully obvious from his first moments on screen! Call blofeld blofeld from the beginning!!!! Sorry there was more than I expected when i started typing!

As much as I love Ralph Fiennes as M, I would've had M be the secret Spectre agent instead of C. It would've been unexpected and genuinely shocking, it would've added a dimension to Skyfall that he was behind Judi Dench's demise so that he could rise to power, and it would've put Bond in an impossible situation. We've seen Bond gone rogue, but we've never seen him in a position where he can't trust his friends in MI6. Hell, for that matter they should've revealed that M is Blofeld! It would mean the end of Ralph Fiennes' tenure as M, but I think it would've been worth it.

Roger Moore was only ok he was perfect as a proper English gentleman. .......but I'm sorry Roger Moore was a joke as a tough guy he just was not believeable......this not saying I didn't enjoy his movies I did but he had some really stupid scenes in the spy who loved me he drives the Lotus into the ocean and it converts to an underwater craft.....beautiful.....then he drives out of the ocean.and has a fish in his hand .....that was so absolutely STUPID it really cheapened the movie and Roger. It really ruined the Lotus technology scene.
