In other words, Connery would star in the first five films which would have been Casino Royale, Live and Let Die, Moonraker, Diamonds are Forever and From Russia with Love. Lazenby would have starred in Dr. No while Roger Moore’s first films would have been For Your Eyes Only followed by Thunderball. Heck, GoldenEye has my number 2 spot! I can appreciate your praise for DAD, which I also remember liking as a kid when it came out, at 12 years old. Honestly. Critically his films are some of the most maligned but I think those of us who grew up in the early 2000’s know that Goldeneye and TWINE are god-tier Bond films. Another thing that Pierce has going for him is that he is the Bond who is the face of Bond video games. Goldeneye 64, Nightfire, Everything or Nothing. That’s why I think his legacy has such staying power with Millenials and Gen Z (such as myself).

I think I cried when it was over, not because I was sad that it ended, but happy that it did. Furthermore, I said that, I think I did because I don't really remember. I was so delirious by the end.

There's plenty here that I disagree with but as Calvin hints at himself, that's inevitable when we're talking about something as subjective as appreciation of movies. The list is put together with so much knowledge and love for the series that I just want to say thank you for a thoroughly enjoyable experience. I particularly appreciate the way we're shown how opinions can change over time. That's certainly true for me too, and I'm now revising my own personal Bond ranking list. Brilliant post. Thanks Calvin.

I personally disagree with his love for the Pierce Brosnan movies (not saying they are worse as films than what I like) but we all have our different styles of movies that we love, he feels lots of nostalgia to the Brosnan era while I feel most nostalgia towards the Connery, 1960s style of Bond movies, it feels like being child again when I think about them. There are so many different styles of Bond that I feel everyone can find something they like and why it probably is so varied what people like and Bond definitely is lots of nostalgia for lots of people.

SPECTRE was for me by far the biggest missed opportunity, because there is so much potential in putting to screen the actual rise of the canonical organization. I have often thought about how I would rewrite that film, and I have never even come close to trying, but in my mind I always gravitated towards some sort of classical spy thriller, focused more on the craft and the challenges that come with building out an organization like that, and less on direct action. I don't know, there are huge challenges in the whole concept of putting a focus directly on SPECTRE, probably the best answer is that this movie should never have been made :p
@h0nza_ Жыл бұрын
I've read some older version of the script and there was a lot of important changes in the story. For example, I've never understood the C plotline. As it turns out, there was specifically show he was controlled by Spectre/Blofeld. Edit: about your opinion Spectre should've never been made - I honestly think Skyfall should've been Craig's last one. I think that it would prevent good chunk of (imo) bad decisions.
@jamesatkinsonja Жыл бұрын
'Never should have been made' is going too far for me as pretty much what Quantum teased in revealing the organization behind Mr White -that question had to be answered as Skyfall had ignored it. James Bond & Friends podcast recently went though the various drafts of the script and it's clear the troubled shoot impacted the film [for example, the original ending was leaked as part of the Sony hack so needed to be changed but the new version still had to finish on London Bridge as that set had already been built; originally Madeline was going to fight Blofeld's female heavy-a new version of Irma Bunt-in the climax but that character was deleted from the script, hence why she just wanders around London before being kidnapped]. I do think, like the Craig saga overall, Spectre works better when watched as part 4 of his 5 part saga rather than on it's own [and it's Craig giving his version of the the 'classic cinematic' Bond in his performance].
@TheApeMachine Жыл бұрын
@@jamesatkinsonja Fair points. I was also a big fan of Craig's bond, from the very start, especially because it was such a natural flow from watching as a child, into a bit more serious now as an adult, while humor and fun still remained present. As for SPECTRE, I feel so conflicted about it I am not even sure precisely how to express what it is that I hoped it would be.

Heavily agree with your assessment of "No Time To Die". For about two thirds of the film, this is up there with my absolute favorites! Everything from Madeira, to Jamaica, Cuba and London I adore and love to rewatch! Even the (predictable) twist of Mathilde is adorable! But starting with the Norwegian forest fight, the movie just goes completely off the rails and enters the deepest depths of cringe. Never seen a movie evoking such starkly conflicting emotions in me. 😄
@doaftheloaf Жыл бұрын
honestly, the worst thing the film did was to tie itself to the rotting corpse that was the last film. that immediately put it at a severe disadvantage. but there were other problems: 1) casting a black woman as "007". i know how that sounds, but my gripe with it is that i think it was done just to fulfill some diversity quota, to satisfy the wokies. it doesn't play an important part in the story. if she'd been 008 instead, i'd have no problem. but doing this just to do it seems phony and inauthentic. 2) i didn't buy the romance with madeline in spectre and i don't buy it here. there's very little about the way they interact that suggests she should be this important to him. with vesper it was believable. with madeline, it isn't. 3) bond dies. i feel this is something you should only do if you're dead certain this will be the last film in the series. also, the villain was rather lackluster and it had the gloomy feel that all the craig films do. he should have quit after skyfall because the series has not had an original thought since. to me, this ranks below every film but spectre. i'd even put thunderball's 1983 bastard child ahead of it. at least that had fatima and mr. bean in it.

@@doaftheloaf 1. It is an important part of the story [and frankly would have the same beats if a white male was playing the role]. Bond has retired and MI6 is not sentimental about it. They replaced him and the replacement is an upstart who doesn't respect Bond and is proud of taking the number, hence why there fighting on the opposite side in the Cuba mission. However, there character arc is them gaining respect for Bond who's shown he's still a valuable agent coming out of retirement, hence why by the time of the third act, they've gained respect for him-handing the 007 number back to him, fighting by his side while Bond shows he respects them as he trust them to look after his family and help them escape.

When I did my ranking, No Time to Die came out 12. I've since softened a bit on that, but I do agree it's a hard one to rank. I do think it's one of the better Bond swan songs, and it’s got an awful lot to love, but I can totally understand the ending of the film souring the meal. But for me, two thirds of an almost three hour film being a lot of fun is hard to dismiss. That’s a remarkable feat. As for top 5, I'm glad you’ve leaned into your own tastes and let your adoration of Moonraker shine. It’s never been a favorite of mine, but I love seeing every film championed by someone, somewhere. I was relieved to hear your more balanced take on NTTD. At one point, I feared you putting it at the bottom. Wish it had been a bit higher, but given how much you loath the ending, this isn’t too bad. I would like to see Calvin do another 'watch all the Craig films in a row' as the ending works a lot better when you've seen that Bond's journey through the films. @@jamesatkinsonja Agree with this. I don’t have a problem with the ending as it is. Obviously it’s sad, but I don’t feel that makes it bad.
