What a genius. Fantastic pianist and superb vocalist. Such a short life at only 43. A banner for the perils of drugs and alcohol.

Somewhere in my posession are more lost recordings of Booker. They were recorded at Maxwell's Toulouse St.Cabaret right before he died. If I can learn how to transfer them from cassette to computer I would gladly upload them.

Ok...I admit I totalled the Vette with this CD in it during those rains we have been having in California. Thank you, thank you for this to tide me over until the new one arrives!!

Woo! Hoo! The Vette is built and I am just waiting for delivery from Kentucky to San Diego--should be before Easter. Once again, thanks for the post..it has helped keep me on an even keel--and yes, we are having more rain out here! You can bet that I will be much more cautious this time around...one of my greatest joys with that car was and will be listening to this genius while driving.

@MultiKZB dude. that's the best comment I've ever read. Because of that, I'm gonna put up the reat of the album because it's one of my all time favourite albums. For me, it's easily Booker's best recording, and the record company lost it for more than twenty years, good work Paramount. It's scary to think that this recording never saw the light of day.

@mrjlkelly1976 i make you right about this LP being Booker's best. such a great choice of songs were cut in this session.i love booker's solo work, but he's so smoking with this band backing him up. if there's a better 6 mins of music than So Swell When You're Well, then i'd be damn happy to hear it....

I know you can transfer from cassette to CD, then it might be easier to upload. If you live in New Orleans, go to the WWOZ studios and I'm sure they can help you there or point you in the right direction.

Does anyone have the recordings that Booker made with Jerry Garcia? I have it on cassette someplace in my house, but that was pre-Katrina and I haven't been able to locate it since the storm. I think it was during this time period that they recorded together. I heard that Garcia couldn't get along with Booker [anyone surprised?]. Booker had his moments - sometimes they stretching into days and weeks.

Booker and his art deserve to be known!! So here's some album notes for anyone interested: 1. • 0:00 Goodnight Irene • Booker's arrangement of the song by Huddie Ledbetter, AKA Lead Belly. I read somewhere that Booker had been using the same chord changes for his version of "My Bonnie Lies over the Ocean" on tour with Dr. John. 2. 3:32 African Gumbo • Booker original. I wonder if he's overdubbing the organ part over his piano? 3. 6:18 Medley: Stormy Monday / Hound Dog • T-Bone Walker / Big Mama Thornton (pre-Elvis!) In contrast to this version in B flat, later Booker recordings of Stormy Monday are in A major with a subdued funk style. He often combined it with "Going Down Slow" by St. Louis Jimmy Oden. 4. 12:06 Junko Partner • Traditional New Orleans blues, first associated with the never-recorded Willie "Drive 'em Down" Hall. Dr. John described it as a historic, ubiquitous New Orleans "anthem of the dopers, the whores, the pimps, the cons. It was a song they sang in Angola, the state prison farm, and the rhythm was even known as the 'jailbird beat'." There are more tracks from this album out there! Check out "Tico Tico" for one of Booker's ultimate flights of virtuosic invention.

Does anyone here--mrjlkelly in particular--know anything about the art in this playlist? I love the shrine-looking thing w/ Booker's image on it? Something w/ 'friends of james booker' on it, kinda folk-artsy? I love those, would like some for my own use.

There is no such thing as "lost" much of anything out here...probably someone quashed the release because it is just so damn good...sorry, that was not very ladylike--how about darn good? New Vette is scheduled for arrival in late April or early May and yes, once again, I will be playing Booker...it has good speed, heads up display, hands free bluetooth and A SUPER SOUND SYSTEM! Only the best for the best.

Somewhere I have some of their rehearsal...it is so obvious that James is running the thing...even telling Garcia the note progression...and Jerry never liked to be upstaged so, as I recall, James lasted all of two nights...

You couldn't be more wrong. Garcia actually brought Booker up for those sessions in Palo Alto because he heard he was stranded in LA and needed cash. So he hired him to play in his backing band. Booker didn't realize he was hired to back Garcia so was acting the band leader- Jerry graciously just let it slide and didn't say anything because not only did he not give a shit about being "upstaged" he was a generous kind soul. You could take a lesson in that regard.
