"Papa's Got A Brand New Bag" (complete, unedited version) - James Brown (1965). The first roots of "Funk" on record! This unedited recording was released at its original speed on the box set "Star Time" (1991). In 1965 the original recording was sped up for its single release, increasing the tempo and raising the pitch by a half step (from 65 bpm to about 90 bpm) and it sounds off tune too. This is the only worthy version of this classic piece of funk !

The single version was sped up a bit and reverb was added to guarantee airplay on AM radio; and clear channel AM stations such as WABC in NewYork or CKLW which served Detroit as well as Ontario would literally beam their airwaves as far as Bermuda in the late night! Brown was smart, he knew exactly what he was doing. Rumor has it that when he heard one of his releases on the radio, he actually went to select radio stations to inform them that a batch of 45 RPM singles of one of his releases were off-center! He was his own Quality Control, A&R, Music Director.....GENIUS!!

This was also recorded after a concert. That's why on this original, it is at a slower pace and James sounds tired along with the band. when they listened to the playback tape they sped it up and it became a multi-million seller and it was the first release to celebrate his new contract with King Records.

"Lotta words here, man." Hilarious, since the "lyrics" to most of his songs don't go much past "e yow we...good god"! Comedians like Eddie Murphy had some hilarious skits around James Brown's lyrical vocabulary. No question about it, though...JB kept his band air tight razor sharp and swinging. The hardest working man in show biz. And that was no joke.

WOW! Thanks for posting this. I hated this as a 12yo kid because it was off-key and just a raucous frenzy. Now I know why: They sped it up from 121bpm to 133bpm (!) and made it into a dance/disco hit so white radio would be more likely to play it. This version is way too funky for 1965 pop radio, but I've played it five times now and am linking this "correct original mono version" to all of the other wack versions posted. What a pleasure to hear this as it was really intended.

Although I like this version better I can see why they had to put reverb and speed it up. It sounds too raw and slow for radio. This is a live sound. Sounds like you're in the room hearing it and it doesn't fit other records. It's too real of a sound.

I'm surprised he kept the name famous flames on this record. They didn't even appear anywhere on this song or that year on any of his songs for that matter.... very very interesting. Not even on this is a man's world did they sing. But he kept the famous flame name on the records

#Ritmos
