I usually do not like the cello suites on viola, but this guy is totally a master of that instrument.

This is my 1st time hearing Mr Buswell IV playing the viola. I grew up adoring him in Chicago area as we were almost the same age. Yes, in fact it's the 5th Cello suite in C minor guys. I'll check to see if Mr Buswell is still alive. I've seen him many times in various chamber festivals, always impressive. I've been to some of his master classes where his extensive knowledge of fine art really helps........I think he has a degree in Art History. Thanks for posting!

Wonderful, it does gain quite a bit when played this well on a viola. If Mr Buswell were known to Bach I can imagine he'd have composed a whole new set of 6 suites or sonatas for viola.

Hi you mean the name of the piece?? Well, to explain it clearly...Bach didn't write suite for the viola (or any of them existed). So the cello suites of Bach were transcribed for viola. Violist don't called them Suite for viola because they are originally Cello Suites. So violists kept the title Cello suite. All 6 of Bach cello suites were transcribed for the viola and this was one of them. Here Mr Buswell (a violinist and violist) plays on a viola (not violin) one of Bach Cello Suites.

Hello? The phrase "in C" means "in C major" and this is not the 3rd suite in C major but the 5th suite in C minor. This said, it's beautiful. The cello suites sound almost better on the viola than on the cello. I'd love it if Yo-Yo Ma would record them on a vertical viola like he did the Bartók concerto!

There is a theory that Bach actually originally wrote the suites for viola (as he loved to play viola himself) and they were later transcribed for cello. It would certainly help if this was titled Suite No. 5 in C minor, not Suite in C.

+Dark's POP Game Reviews. It was a violist who had done some research. I can't find it at present. Latest research suggests they may have been written for cello da spalla (sometimes called viola da spalls), a small cello played like a viola. There are a couple of performances of this on KZbin.

+Dallis Church It is not a song. You can find transcriptions for violin of the other suites on KZbin, so it is possible that this one has also been transcribed. As violinists have their own unaccompanied sonatas and partitas they do not usually find the need to transcribe or perform the cello suites.

He’s playing a viola. The reason it works is because they have the same strings and the notes are in the same places. They’re just different octaves.

But it’s not impossible to play on the violin. If you look you can probably find something.

Tsukij Transcribe everything up a fifth, so it would put it in G-minor and all the fingerings should be the same between Viola and Violin. After all, lot of Violin music is transcribed down a fifth for Viola, so it's a pretty common practice

Dear SoundProfessional Boston, a couple people have already pointed out, this is the 5th suite in C minor, not the 3rd suite in C (major). Can you fix the title?
