Cagney decided to try out He went on last and just imitated the dancers ahead of him as he had no dance background. He got the part

It was a very somber Easter weekend that year but we were encouraged by being able to continue to watch his movies on VHS and DVD. Ironically, this movie was released June 6th, 1942, the day (in the US ) after the Battle of Midway concluded. The country had yet to hear of our great naval victory. America was hard pressed to find much positive and encouraging news to listen to, so this movie provided a wonderful "escape".

Many had appeared on Broadway before transitioning to the Screen. Cagney was versatile and could play any role. I think he is amazing in this movie, as in all the ones he made. Cagney was already 43(!) years old here, not a young man in his twenties anymore ! Astonishing and awesome, how dynamic , full of energy and light on his feet he still was at that age. Just look at his jump at 3.50! You can clearly see he also hold a black belt in judo..👍 And he nailed Cohan's movements and singing style 100% . The' Oscar' for Cagney was surely well deserved.

Never again, will we see MASTERPIECES, such as...….Yankee, Doodle, Dandy.....Gone With The Wind...The Wizard Of Oz,.... Casablanca.... The 10 Commandments...Ben Hur...The Longest Day....From Here To Eternity....West Side Story....Some Like It Hot..... It Happened One Night.....Singin' In The Rain....The Five Pennies.....On The Waterfront....Citizen Kane.....Lawrence Of Arabia.... It's A Wonderful Life, & dozens of other films I could name....Never again will we see the comedic genius of Charlie Chaplin, Laurel & Hardy, Abbott & Costello, Don Rickles, or the singing voices of Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, The Andrew Sisters, & ALL the 50'S & 60'S singers & groups, which produced the GREATEST MUSIC OF ALL TIME...As sad as it is, that those days are long gone, I am also heartfully overjoyed that I have & will ALWAYS have the memories of the GREATEST ENTERTAINMENT ERA OF OUR TIME... Jimmy Cagney's rival at the time for gangster pictures and being able to dance was George Raft. Raft was also a "song and dance man" who also did many gangster pictures. But yeah.....good luck finding someone today who can match Cagney's talent.

This clip and entire movie is the true spirit of the United States, it is from a simpler time where America was celebrated by most of its citizens and proudly acknowledged. Today we are a ghost of a country compared to what this movie portrayed. Cohan and the Americans of WWI and WWII would be embarrassed and ashamed with what we have become. I have tears in my eyes watching this and I truly hope America one day will return to this old time spirit. However I feel this won't ever be possible again the more time goes on.......... A movie like this would never be created today...
